The Sound of Collaboration

SMusician, Author Join Forces to Create Christmas Song

everal years ago, Jim Weagley of Atglen had a melody and lyrics in his head, but with no musical expertise, he could not find a way to bring them to life. That is when Lancaster County musician Juliana Lane came into the picture and together the two strangers produced a song, “Do You Believe? (The Christmas Story).”

Weagley, who retired from the field of sports medicine, is the author of several books, including “Bet on the Turtle: My Long, Slow Journey of Faith.” After coming up with the tune, he searched online and found Lane, who is the worship leader at Manheim Grace Church.

“I had the tune and lyrics and started looking on the internet to see if I could find a singer/songwriter and producer in the Lancaster area,” Weagley explained. “I love music, but don’t play an instrument and I can’t

read music and I have no musical ability. I sent me singing my song a cappella. I asked them to not judge

my voice, but to judge the song based on what they think it could be.”

Enter Lane, who provides vocals and plays the piano on the recently released song. “I have been writing songs since I was 11 years old,” she

said. “I had not met (Weagley) before, but he came across my website and music online. He contacted me, and the project began from there. It surprised me, but it ended up being a really cool collaboration.”

Lane sang the song and added instrumentation, including violins, guitar and flute. “He sent me an audio file of him singing the tune, and I ended up taking that and fully producing it and turning it into what it is now,” she stated. “I am a self-taught musician, and I mostly play by ear. I took what he had and developed chords around it.”

“It is a very long process,” Lane added. “We go through sourcing the song and the chorus and finalizing the arrangement that (Weagley) was happy with and we move onto production - bringing on musicians to play the different parts and arranging those.”

ready for people to enjoy. “As soon as I heard the song, I thought it was beautiful and I saw so much potential in it,” said Lane, noting that her favorite part of the song is the violin solo. “It was fun watching the song grow from the first demo to now.”

The process of producing the song took nearly a year to complete. “I met with (Lane) initially last July (of 2024). I told her to take her time,” said Weagley. “She would send me a version of her simply singing and playing piano, and bit by bit instruments were added in.”

Lane completed the recording in her in-home music studio. She explained that accompanying musicians did not gather to play the song; rather they contributed their parts via online audio files. “I gave notes to each musician of what I was looking for them to play, and they sent me their files and we collaborated online digitally,” she said. “I recorded my piano and vocals in my studio, and for all the other musicians, we collaborated over Zoom. They each had their own studios and they each recorded their parts. I had to mix everything and piece everything together.”

Today, the song is completed and

drive around to judge the entries on Friday, Dec. 19, after 5:30 p.m. The judges will decide on the first-, second- and third-place winners. In addition to the panel of judges, community voting will determine the “Parkesburg Pick.” Those who want to participate in voting for the “Parkesburg Pick” home are asked to send $1 via Venmo to @ParkesburgLionsClub indicating their choice in the note. Community members are asked to cast their votes between Friday, Nov. 28, and Thursday, Dec. 18. “People should drive around and look at the homes in person. They can vote on

whatever house they want,” noted Karen Fronefield, Lions Club president. “There is a way to make a note in Venmo, and they should put the address of the house they are voting for.”

All funds raised through voting will be put toward charities that benefit the visually impaired. “It is like (an alternative) to the White Cane fund-

“The most amazing thing to me is I had lyrics and a tune in my head (and) to envision what she did with it is incredible,” Weagley added. “I hope people enjoy the song and hope they welcome it into their hearts.”

“Do You Believe? (The Christmas Story),” which was released on Nov. 20, is currently available for downloading on major music platforms, including Spotify, Amazon, YouTube and Apple. to remember and honor those who served in the military. “We started with 1,250 wreaths. This year, we will be placing over 3,000 wreaths in 30 cemeteries. It is such a labor of love. I feel so blessed that our community loves our veterans and wants to do this.”

This year’s National Wreaths Across America Day will be observed on Saturday, Dec. 13. Locally, the program will begin with a ceremony at noon at the Pequea Valley Secondary School, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers.

Diem, who is the location coordinator for the local program, will lead the ceremony, which will be held indoors and is free and open to the community. “I will talk about Wreaths Across America and the meaning of the day,” she said, noting that there will be special wreaths presented to local veterans and community members representing the branches of the military. “We will present eight wreaths on behalf of the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, Space Force, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard and the POW/MIAs.”

Following the ceremony, the special wreaths will be transported to the Gap VFW by auxiliary member Dick Martin. The eight wreaths will be displayed on the front lawn of the building.

The wreaths that will be placed at cemeteries in the Pequea Valley and Octorara areas will arrive at the Gap Fire Company on Thursday, Dec. 11. “A Tyson Food truck brings our wreaths to Gap, and then students from Pequea Valley unload the truck with their adviser,” Diem explained. “For some students, this is their fifth year to do it. These kids started in eighth grade. This group (of students) is special to me.”

Once the boxes are unloaded from the truck, they are organized inside the fire company. “On Saturday morning at 8 a.m., the local fire companies come to the Gap Fire Hall, and they take the boxes of wreaths and deliver them to our cemeteries,” noted Diem.

Volunteers, including members of Boy Scout troops from Parkesburg and Paradise, will lay the wreaths on the graves that are marked as veterans either with a flag or plaque. “At each grave, while laying the wreath, we are to say the veteran’s name, branch of service and thank them for their service,” Diem said, noting this tradition is practiced nationwide at all Wreaths Across America events.

The wreaths are purchased through fundraising efforts and with donations from local businesses and individuals. “Each wreath is $17, so (we need) over $50,000,” noted Diem. “We have two bingos a year, a golf outing, plus our craft show. We also sell candles.”

Diem said that the Wreaths Across America tradition continues

each holiday season no matter the conditions. “We have been in the rain and 30-mile-an-hour winds and 20-degree weather, and one year we had to dig out snow to place wreaths,” she said. “But our veterans did things in zero degrees and 140-degree weather. It’s only an hour of our time, and it was their way of life.”

Those who would like to help place wreaths on Dec. 13 should contact Diem at 717-587-1315 or register at www.wreathsacross america.org/papqvc. Volunteers

tradition for many families. “It’s more fun to see the houses in person. You can’t get a good impression from a photo,” she stated. “There are houses that you can tell it took a lot of time to decorate. Some people go all out.”

“There is nothing better to get in the holiday spirit than to drive around your community looking at all of the wonderful holiday decorations,” added Lions Club member Robin McKenna. “Parkesburg residents always do a fantastic job in decorating their homes, and it does not go unnoticed.”

There will be prizes for the top three homes, and the winners will be provided with a sign to be displayed in their yard that indicates their winning status. The signs will be collected by the Lions after the holidays.

The Parkesburg Lions Club is always looking for new members. Prospective members are invited to attend a club meeting. Meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St. When meetings are held at different locations, information is posted on the Facebook page.

Upcoming events for the Parkesburg Lions Club in 2026 include a February food drive at Dutch-Way Farm Market; a veterans/soldiers project; Tingo, which is a tea combined with a mini bingo game; and an Easter breakfast.

For more information and to register a home for the holiday decorating contest, visit the “Parkesburg Lions Club - New and Improved” Facebook page. Those with questions may contact Fronefield at 484-678-4231.

are also needed to remove the wreaths on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026.

“From the time we start on Thursday to the day we pick up the wreaths after they have been on the grave for approximately six weeks, there are over 300 volunteers,” Diem added. “We can’t do it without them.”
