Lions Collect Supplies For Hurricane Victims BY FRANCINE FULTON

In the aftermath of the devastating hurricanes that recently hit Louisiana, members of the Christiania Lions Club immediately leapt into action, collecting much-needed supplies for residents affected by the storms. The Christiana Lions Club and Lion
Jim Groff, Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator, have a history of helping victims of natural disasters. In the past, Groff has traveled to help at tornado-devastated Joplin, Mo., and New Jersey towns hit by Hurricane Sandy. “During all of these disasters people want to give and be involved,� said Groff. “You just ask, and people give. It’s been a wonderful experience.� See Lions pg 2

Parkesburg Lamps Part Of Silent Auction BY FRANCINE FULTON
ocal residents now have an opportunity to own a piece of Parkesburg history. Three Parkesburg Lamps, which were manufactured in Parkesburg between 1936 and 1952, are currently available as part of a silent auction being held by the Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St., Parkesburg. The auction began on Oct. 5 and will end on Saturday, Nov. 14. Community members are invited to stop by the library to pick up a registration form and bidder’s number. Participants may bid as often as they like. The red lamps, which have been donated to the library for the auction, are all operational. They do not include a shade, but there is a component attached, called a harp, which can hold a shade. “(We determined that) whoever buys them would want to pick out his or her own shade,� said library director Tom Knecht. “They are similar, but (each) is etched with a different design.� Parkesburg resident Cathy Wilde Christ, who owns and is knowledgeable about the
The stems of the lamps are made of brass and resemble a long bell. Two of the lamps in the library auction have polished stems; one does not. “Sometimes people want to leave them (unpolished). Other times they want them shiny,� Knecht noted. “People who collect antiques would probably leave them (unpolished).� Christ reported that actor Clark Gable was said to have been a good customer of Thomas Glass Works and that the Parkesburg Lamps can be seen in the movies “ White Christmas,� “State Fair,� “The Glenn Miller Story� and the original version of “The Parent Trap.� In December of 1953, a fire swept through Thomas Glass Works. Eight fire companies responded to the blaze, but the building and surrounding areas were totally destroyed. Thomas never reopened after the fire. He sold his land and personal property, and he and his family moved to Florida. The lamps have now become collector’s items. Parkesburg Lamps, explained that Paul Thomas, a former truck driver, came to Parkesburg in 1934 with the idea of opening up a business in an old Parkesburg Iron Company building located at the corner of First Avenue and Brandt Street. Today that location is the parking lot of Planet Fitness. Thomas named his business Thomas Glass Works. He sold and produced lamps, vases, candelabras, paperweights, inkwells and glassware. His lamps were etched with different designs and came in different-colored glass, including cranberry, green, clear, blue, amber and amethyst. According to a written history of the lamps provided by Knecht, the electric table lamps were made to appear as if they had been converted from oil or kerosene. They also feature square marble bases. The history states that at first the marble lamp bases were cut by hand by Thomas’ workers with a hacksaw. Later, an employee invented a machine made from an old car engine that had an emery wheel attached to it that was used to cut the marble. The employees also used polishing and buffing machines.

Oct. 15 and were then loaded onto a tractor-trailer by the Christiana Lions Club, along with other Lions Club members from the eastern region of District 14, including the Morgantown/Elverson Lions Club and clubs from Lancaster and Lebanon. The tractortrailer then made stops in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh before heading south. The tractor-trailer was “wrapped” with the Lions Club logo and the statement “Pennsylvania Lions - Serving Our Community Since 1923.” “We never had a tractor-trailer wrapped with our logo,” Groff pointed out. “It’s like a billboard - it’s a moving billboard. It’s a great idea and good way of promoting Lionism.” The tractor-trailer that transported the goods was provided by A&S Kinard Trucking in York. “After Hurricane Harvey (in 2017), we took four tractor-trailers down there and we found companies willing to donate time and fuel. I knew that would not be the case every time,” Groff explained. “My

As part of the latest effort, the Christiana Lions Club opened its building on Oct. 4 through 8 to receive donations. Another donation drive was held on Oct. 3 at DutchWay Farm Market in Gap. “The community is wonderful,” said Groff. “We went to Dutch-Way and we packed five pickup trucks of stuff in one day. We had stuff at people’s houses, in garages and warehouses and brought everything to the Lions building on (Oct. 4) to box everything up.” Working with a Lions Club in Louisiana, the local club was able to put together a list of needed items, which included laundry detergent, bleach, mops, work gloves, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items. All of the donations were sorted and placed in boxes by volunteers. “We used to buy our boxes, but PCA (Packaging Corporation of America) in Lancaster made boxes for us and printed them out with the Lions logo,” noted Groff. The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) recently bestowed a second Certificate of Achievement to the county, recognizing Chester County’s use of performance data in local government management, including training, verification, and public reporting established through Chester County’s Managing for Results process. Born of Chester County’s Strategic Plan, Managing for Results gives county departments and staff a formula in determining how their work, actions and behavior support the overall strategic direction of the county. Managing for Results also aims to ensure accountability and transparency in Chester County government. The ICMA Certificate of Achievement is awarded to cities and counties based data collection and verification and the honorees’ actions to ensure reliability, train staff in performance measurement, and report the data to the public through budgets, newsletters, and information to elected officials. Chester County is among 16 jurisdictions to receive the Certificate of Achievement and is one of just 60 recognized by ICMA overall across North America.

We typically sing against some of our prerecorded performances, and we also have learning tracks we can sing against.� The group had been recording its in-person rehearsals in order to fine tune the finished songs. Those recordings are now proving helpful in another way. Additionally, Zoom breakout rooms enable participants to meet in smaller groups where one person sings a part and the others, who are muted, can harmonize with them. Online rehearsals also enable Vocal Harmonix members to take advantage of recorded resources. “We are able to watch videos to learn about specific vocal warmups, breathing techniques, etc.,� Pedelini remarked. “We spent a few weeks learning specifically about how to mark our music.� Pedelini noted that Vocal Harmonix is working on creating a montage of all the members singing together in home-recorded videos. “It

Members of the Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) dedicated an illustrated outdoor historical marker on Sept. 12 in Christiana, commemorating the last standing stone arch bridge built by the Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad, one of the earliest railroads to operate in the United States. The rail line was also used as part of the Underground Railroad. About 30 people attended the unveiling, which took place on the property of the Charles Bond Company, located at 11 Green St., Christiana. The Bond Company, recognized as the oldest continuously operating manufacturing company in Lancaster County, originally made turbines, gear reducers and metal castings, many of which were used on the railroads. The bridge spans Pine Creek, which divides Lancaster and Chester counties. “This arch bridge has been back here for the last 190 years, and it deserves the attention we are giving it,” stated NRHS vice president Glenn Kendig. “It is architecturally and historically significant, and very few people know it exists.”

Celebrate Recovery Group Sets Meetings The Celebrate Recovery (CR) ministry at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2483 Baltimore Pike, Oxford, is reopening and is taking place every Tuesday beginning Oct. 20. CBF Awards Contracts For Trees The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity
and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for proposals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF.
Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. Fire Prevention Week Chester County recently recognized Fire Prevention Week, noting no deaths due to fire in 2019. Chester County commissioners joined other local, county, state, and federal officials in signing a proclamation recognizing Fire Prevention Week 2020 from Oct. 4 to 10. Fire Prevention Week is dedicated to emphasizing the importance of fire prevention and safety, as well as recognizing the fire service’s contributions to public safety. The commissioners’ proclamation highlighted that there were no firerelated deaths in Chester County in 2019, but it noted the devastation caused by fire in Chester County in 2019, including 44 civilians who experienced injury from fire and property damage that totaled in excess of $44 million. Fire Prevention Week is a public safety campaign that has existed for over 90 years, sustained by millions of firefighters across the United States who work to reach the citizens they serve with fire safety messages.
