Church to host 5K, fun run and Trunk or Treat

F

reedom Life Church will present the 10th annual Freedom 5K and fun run followed by a Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Salisbury Township Community Park , commonly known as Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap. The 5K run will be timed by Pretzel City Sports. Following an awards presentation for the top finishers in various age categories, there will be a fun run that will consist of one lap around the park. Goodie bags and refreshments will be provided for all registrants. Event organizers note that community members participate

in the event, not just those who attend Freedom Life. “There was about 100 (participants) in the 5K last year,” said Angie Dearolf, Freedom Life communications director, noting that parents with children in strollers are welcome in both the 5K and the fun run. “Last year, we had the Southern End Strollers come with their little ones, and they walked the course.” “Our first 5K was through the streets of Christiana,” Dearolf added, noting that the other family events were added in subsequent years. A free Kids’ Zone will open at 9 a.m. as well. Offered will be bounce houses, a petting zoo,

face painting, concessions and more. The Kids’ Zone will remain open until 11:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. FL Kids will host a Trunk or Treat for families in the lower parking lot of the park. Children in fifth grade and younger are invited to participate. As part of the Trunk or Treat event, volunteers will decorate the trunks of their vehicles in child-friendly themes and distribute candy to children. Non-scary costumes are encouraged, and admission is free. Proceeds from the 5K will be used in the fight against human trafficking. Over the past nine years, Freedom Life has been able to give nearly $60,000 to reach,

Feeding the hungry Pequea Presbyterian Church offers ministry BY FRANCINE FULTON

As part of an effort to serve people in need in the community, Pequea Presbyterian Church in Gap offers free food to the public every Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. No proof of income is required. The church obtains the items from Blessings of Hope, a food distribution ministry that receives food from food producers and distributors, as well as grocery stores. Each person gets several boxes of food at the church in a drive-up

format. “We have a dry goods box, a produce box and a refrigerated or frozen box,” explained food ministry volunteer Doris Witmer, who is also a church deacon. On a recent Friday, the fresh produce box contained potatoes, snap peas, strawberries, lettuce, grape tomatoes and peaches. “We usually have something they can make a salad with, and we try to get fresh fruits and vegetables,” said church pastor Alfred Wanner. The cold box contained chocolate milk, yogurt, liquid eggs,
