Penn Rise Advisors will host its annual Bonfire and Brews Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 10 p.m. at its office, 3000 Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg. This year will be Penn Rise Advisors’ fifth edition of the festival, which was previously known as the Fire and Wine Festival. Proceeds from the festival benefit two local fire companies, the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD) in Parkesburg and the Sadsburyville Fire Company. “It’s an interesting event, because we’re not an organized nonprofit,” said Candice Klingmann of Penn Rise Advisors. “It’s basically a bunch of people in the community getting together and making it happen.” There is a cost to purchase tickets to the event. A ticket provides entry, as well as a door prize entry and one Suburban Brewing Company specialty draft if purchased by Thursday, Oct. 15. Tickets will be sold at the door for a slightly higher price as long as capacity limits allow. The event is weather dependent. Ticket sales will not be refunded. The event is limited to people age 18 and over; IDs will be checked on-site. No outside food or alcohol is permitted, and no animals are welcome, outside of certified service animals. Food vendors will be available at the event, including the Suburban Brewing food truck. Sadsburyville Fire Company will also have a tent, selling chili and corn bread. reedom Life Church will host its annual Freedom 5K and Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, promising to bring runners, families and the community together for a morning of fun and meaningful impact. “Freedom Life Church definitely has a heart for the community, and we want to look for opportunities that we can bring people together and just have a good time, build relationships and give people a safe place where they can make memories and come together as a family,” said Angie Dearolf, the church’s communications director. Beginning at 9 a.m., the 11th annual Freedom 5K will take participants on an out-and-back road course through Christiana, offering runners and walkers an opportunity to enjoy the community while supporting a cause that reaches far beyond the finish line. Certain roads on the course will be closed, and fire police will be present at the event to assist with runner safety.

Museum Plans 1940s Swing Dance
West Chester University (WCU) has earned the 2026 Higher Education E xcellence and Distinction (HEED) Award from Insight Into Academia magazine, a publication focused on best practices in higher education. It is the sixth time WCU has received the HEED Award, which recognizes U.S. colleges and universi t ies th at demonstrate an outstanding commitment to academic excellence, belonging, and community-building across all levels of campus life. West Chester was recognized for a variety of inclusion efforts. Among them, WCU’s Frederick Douglass Institute hosted the annual DeBaptiste Douglass Lecture recognizing America250 with a keynote lecture, “The
Struggle for Democracy and Justice in America: What Would Frederick Douglass Do?” In addition, the university’s Parenting Pathways Program sponsored the annual Parenting Student Graduation Celebration, in which students’ children are provided with a special cord to bestow upon their parents in advance of the university’s formal commencement ceremonies. The Parenting Pathways initiative includes mini-grants, supportive resources, and community events throughout the year. The events are intended to encourage the campus community to learn about and engage with sustainable practices at the university. The programs are free and open to the public. were blind; they couldn’t see,” said Bill Dodds, a Paradise Township Lion that organizes the event. “But that’s not true. Most of them do see, they just have different types of issues with their vision.” The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at White Chimneys Estate, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. “They even provide goggles that simulate the different sight issues that people might have,” said Dodds, who explained that diners can choose what level of impairment they would like to simulate, using tools like the goggles and blindfolds. Funds raised through the event will benefit VisionCorps, a Lancaster-based nonprofit that seeks to empower individuals who are blind or vision impaired to attain independence. In the event’s history, it has raised $25,000 for the organization. At the Lions International convention in 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be “knights for the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Supporting VisionCorps is how the Paradise Township Lions fulfill that mission. “ We n e ve r re a l l y addressed anything to them directly (in the past), so it was a project that I thought would be very beneficial,” Dodds explained. “Even though we do wonderful things and help many in many different areas, (the Lions) are still well known mainly for vision support.” On the menu for the event will be baked chicken, roast beef and gravy, baby carrots, string beans, red skin potatoes with parsley, festive tossed salad, rolls

with butter and fruit cups. Dessert will feature pumpkin pie and chocolate cake. Lemonade and coffee will be served for drinks; all food and drink is included in the price of the ticket. A silent auction, featuring 50 items, will also take place at the event. An Eagles jersey signed by Saquon Barkley, tickets to Magic & Wonder Dinner Theater and a signed CD collage by Taylor Swift were some of the items featured in the auction last year; all of the items in the auction are donated by community members and local businesses. Separately, there will also be a themed basket giveaway. Last year, there was a Christmas bag, a Thanksgiving basket and a case of Martin’s potato chips, among other items. White Chimneys donates the location for the event, while Yoder’s Catering provides the food. “Part of the success of Dinner in the Dark is the folks we partner with,” Dodds said. “They also help out in making this a successful project for VisionCorps.” As in the past, a VisionCrops representative will speak at the dinner to share more about the organization and its programming. Dodds noted that the Dinner in the Dark usually attracts more than 70 attendees and typically raises around $3,500 per year. The race will be held rain or shine, and proceeds will benefit All Things Possible and Project Rescue, two organizations working to combat human trafficking and bring hope, freedom, and restoration to those affected by exploitation. Timing and race results will be managed by Pretzel City Sports. “We also want to think of how we can benefit beyond ourselves,” Dearolf said. “Human trafficking is something that our church has been made aware of, and we want to have an impact. … The 5K and Fall Festival is an opportunity to serve our community, as well as benefit some greater causes around the world.” Participants are encouraged to register early, with early bird reg istration ending Wednesday, Sept. 30. Online registration is available at www.freedom. life/freedom5k. The cost of registering includes a commemorative T-shirt, which is guaranteed for early bird registration. The remaining T-shirts will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. Following the 5K awards pres entation, families are invited to stay for the completely free Fall Festival from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Children especially will enjoy Trunk-or-Treat, inflatables, free concessions, a rock climbing wall, a hayride, a petting zoo and other activities. The festival portion is not rain or shine but will be held barring a downpour. Kids are invited to come to the festival in nonscary costumes. Dozens of food trucks will be in attendance
at the event. The morning will conclude with the Pie Auction at noon, raising additional funds for All Things Possible and Project Rescue. Community members can participate by donating a homemade pie, bidding on a pie, or both. One pie, featuring Freedom Life senior pastor Sam Masteller’s face on it, sold for over $800 last year. “I would say that the average cost of a pie last year was $100,” Dearolf said. “People were ver y generous. We had all kinds of pies. We had gluten-free pies, we had fruit pies, we had pumpkin pies. … It was just a lot of fun.” “The Freedom 5K and Fall Festival is an opportunity for people to come together, have fun, and make a difference,” added coordinator Ann Michelle Esh. “We’re also grateful to business partners who help cover our expenses so we can give more to the causes.” The window for sponsorships has closed, but the church still invites any individuals or organizations who are interested in

Railroad Photography Class Planned The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will offer a railroad photography class on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 9 to 11 a.m. The program, “Making the Most of Autumn Foliage and Autumn Light,” will be led by railroad photographer and author Brian Solomon. The session will offer tips for railroad photographers, effective ways to work with autumn foliage and autumn light, and composition techniques. It will also include a hands-on tutorial with equipment in the outside yard, weather and conditions permitting, as well as the Pennsylvania Railroad E7s No. 7002, Pennsylvania
Railroad E7 No. 5901, and Conrail GP30 No. 2233 locomotives in the Rolling Stock Hall. Class participants may use their smartphone, digital camera, or film camera to photograph the historic equipment. Solomon earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He produces a daily blog about railroad photography, and his articles and photography have appeared in many railway magazines, including Trains Magazine, Railway Age, Railroad Explorer, Railfan & Railroad, the National Railroad Historical Society Bulletin, Germany’s Mod-
elleisenbahner, the Journal of the Irish Railway Record Society, and the UK’s Rail Magazine. Solomon was presented with the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society’s Fred A. & Jane R. Stindt Photography Award in 2020 for his lifetime achievements in railroad photography. Solomon is the author of more than 70 books and writes a monthly travel column and feature articles for Firecrown Media’s Trains Magazine. He is the marketing manager for New Hampshire’s Conway Scenic Railroad and lives with his wife, Kris, in Lancaster County. Many of his books are available for purchase

facilities operations, Jack oversees the maintenance, management, and upkeep of 140 facilities across the Pennsylvania T u r n p i k e ’s 5 6 5 - m i l e network , including the Central Administration Building, Turnpike Industrial Park, the eastern and western regional offices, 23 maintenance sheds, five tunnels, and various tower sites, fare collection facilities, and Pennsylvania State Police stations. He was the co-founder of the PA Turnpike Commission’s Sustainability Committee and helped co-chair the committee for five years. Under Jack’s leadership, the PA Turnpike Commission achieved a perfect score from Pennsylvania’s GreenGov Council, and it has done so for four consecutive years. Established in 2019, the GreenGov Council supports the commonwealth’s climate goal of an 80% reduction of net greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 levels by 2050. Housed within the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the council helps integrate sustainability into the commonwealth’s policies, planning, operations, procurement, and regulatory functions. In 2022, Jack oversaw the installation of the PA Tu r n p i ke C o m m i s sion’s 3,300-panel solar micro gr id that powers the Greensburg Maintenance Facility and District Tra d e s B u i l d i n g. T h i s project has evolved the PA Turnpike Commission’s energy management strategy to include constructing a series of solar generation facilities along the PA Turnpike’s right-
of-way areas, building a solar canopy at its Central Administration Building, and hosting an inductive charging stationary showcase to test the interoperability of electric vehicle charging stations. Jack has shared insights o n t h e PA Tu r n p i k e ’s sustainability strategy at various forums nationwide, including the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association; the American Society of Highway Engineers; and the Keystone Emergency Management Association. Sustainability and environmental protection have been core beliefs within the PA Turnpike Commission since the 1990s. Other recent innovations in sustainability include reducing energy usage, which has yielded financial savings for the PA Turnpike Commission; installing electric vehicle chargers at its ser vice plazas, with more than 80 to be installed by 2027; reducing mowing schedules to allow native plant growth; and evaluating the feasibility of an electrified road system. The agency has also planted pollinator habitats at seven service plazas and interchanges, as well as the Central Administration Building in Middletown, with more than 40 sites being explored for future installation. Jack, a 25-year employee of the PA Turnpike Commission, was previously recognized as the Engineer of the Year by the Facility M a n a g e r s A s s o c i at i o n in 2014.
