ew Octorara Primar y Learning Center principal Angela Regrut feels like she is right where she belongs. Having bounced back and forth from working in school administration to being a special education teacher, the New Jersey native feels like Octorara is the perfect place to combine her skills into one position. “I (had) been (at Radnor) for the last five years, working with the wonderful teachers and people there, and then decided that it was time to come back into administration,” she said. “Working with the teachers as their coach got me back into that flow again, and then this opportunity at Octorara popped up, and I jumped all over it.” Regrut brings decades of experience as an elementary and middle school teacher, instructional coach, multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) facilitator and special education teacher to Octorara, where she is beginning her role with the start of the new school year.

As the new school year gets underway, there is certainly plenty of change at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS). Along with the ongoing expansion project and ensuing Growing Together Capital Campaign, the school is welcoming a new principal and first ever head of school this fall.
Delaware native Jonathan Nazig ian slides into the newly created position in an interim role. Having spent the last three years as headmaster at Wilmington Christian School, Nazigian brings nearly 30 years of Christian school experience to WFCS in a litany of different roles, including teacher, principal, spiritual life director and basketball coach.

Freedom Life Church will host its annual Freedom 5K and Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, promising to bring runners, families and the community together for a morning of fun and meaningful impact. “Freedom Life Church definitely has a heart for the community, and we want to look for opportunities that we can bring people together and just have a good time, build relationships and give people a safe place where they can make memories and come together as a family,” said Angie Dearolf, the church’s communications director. Beginning at 9 a.m., the 11th annual Freedom 5K will take participants on an out-and-back road course through Christiana, offering runners and walkers an opportunity to enjoy the community while supporting a cause that reaches far beyond the finish line. Certain roads on the course will be closed, and fire police will be present at the event to assist with runner safety. The race will be held rain or shine, and proceeds will benefit All Things Possible and Project Rescue, two organizations working to combat human trafficking and bring hope, freedom, and restoration to those affected by exploitation. Timing and race results will be managed by Pretzel City Sports. “ We also want to think of how we can benefit beyond ourselves,” Dearolf said. “Human trafficking is something that our church has been made aware of, and we want to have an impact. WFCS from pg 1 “I just felt the Lord leading me to a new adventure,” he said. “It’s our 86th year (at WFCS). Great heritage, great legacy in the community. They’re looking to grow the school and just continually improve and pursue excellence.” Previously, the school’s principal handled all the position’s administrative duties, along with the fundraising elements required for being a private institution. Now, the role has been divided in half. Heather Furlong most recently served in the principal role, having resigned over the summer. “The head of school role is really to connect with the community, look to grow the school organizationally and in excellence. menting a new leadership structure for our school,” said Bradley Marshall, president of the WFCS board of trustees. “Rather than asking one person to oversee every aspect of school leadership, we are moving toward a model that divides responsibilities between two complementary roles: a head of school and a principal. Together, these roles are designed to strengthen our ability to serve students, families and staff while positioning the school for future growth.” Jonathan resides in Delaware with his wife, Debbie, and their three sons, Ethan, Luke and Christian. Jonathan’s father was also an administrator at a Christian school and was the president of the Mid-Atlantic Christian Schools Association (MACSA), of which WFCS is a member. Jonathan has an undergraduate degree in English from Liberty University and a master’s degree in school leadership and administration from Cairn University. “I was reading up on the history of the school before I came,” he said. “Back in the ’90s, they had put together a 50th anniversary booklet. I was reading through that, and my dad was actually mentioned because they said they had gone to a MACSA convention over in Lancaster.” Jennifer White slides into the principal role. She has an undergraduate degree in English Education from Millersville University and a master’s degree with principal certification from Wilmington University. Originally a two-room schoolhouse, WFCS has expanded greatly over the past eight decades. The school originally served grades one through eight and now offers preschool through 12th-grade education for the first time this school year. WFCS enrollment has greatly expanded over the last half-decade. It enrolls over 180 students this fall. The new building project See WFCS pg 6

She had previously worked for 10 years in New Jersey as a teacher and for five years as an administrator in North Carolina. More locally, she also worked in Upper Merion Area School District, Radnor Township School District and Susquehanna Township School District. “I have a really fond love for our littles,” she said. “I love K-5, but K-2 is really where my heart and passion is, working with them.” Despite being from New Jersey, all three of her postsecondary degrees were obtained in the commonwealth. She holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from Bloomsburg University; a master’s degree in educational leadership and special education supervision from Saint Joseph’s University; and a doctorate in education leadership with a concentration in curriculum, instruction and assessment from Cabrini University. In her first few months in Chester County, Regrut said that she can already feel the spirit and community-oriented ways of the Octorara family. “Over the summer, I got the opportunity to interview and went through several rounds. ... Just by talking with (the teachers), I could sense a true passion that they have for not just their jobs, but for the children here in this district and the families that they work with,” she said. “I kept saying, ‘this is where I want to be.’ If they offered it to me, I knew this is definitely where I wanted to be.” In a letter to the school community, Regrut wrote, “As I begin my time at PLC, my first priority is getting to know our students, families, staff, and community. I look forward to listening, learning, and building relationships while honoring the traditions and strengths that make Octorara such a special place. Together, we will continue to foster a welcoming environment where every child feels a true sense of belonging and is empowered to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors, and appreciate opportunities to be active in the community. I look forward to meeting many of you at school events, family activities, and throughout the school year.” Relevant to her special education background, Regrut emphasized the importance of inclusivity and making sure that every student knows they belong at Octorara. Her dissertation for her doctorate was on the relationship between teachers and special education teachers and how they handle conflict and communication. “I’m very open and transparent,” she said. “I believe that’s very important. ... My door is always open, and I’m always welcome to feedback.”

Auction Raises Funds WFCS from pg 2 includes five new classrooms, for Hospice four of which are on the new PLACE AN AD plants, tools, collectibles, and other donated items. The event included the annual Day of Care Auction, which raised $115,000 to help provide hospice care for families facing financial hardship. These gifts will support over 500 days of care. The Labor Day Auction was made possible by the more than 500 volunteers who gave their time before, during, and after the event, along with the many donors, sponsors, businesses, and community partners that contributed. Choices Healthcare, the nonprofit parent organization of Hospice & Community Care and Hospice of Central PA, provides hospice care, palliative care, grief support, and related services to more than 700 individuals each day throughout central Pennsylvania.

It also includes a facilitator planning space, testing rooms and a mezzanine that is intended to serve as an event and collaborative learning space. “Much of the construction is completed,” Jonathan said. “We’re still (putting) finishing touches on the elevator; some of the final painting and final finishing elements; getting our certification of occupancy; and making sure that the security and the fire alarms, some of the electrical elements, TVs and projectors and things (work).” As part of the Growing Together Capital Campaign, the school projected that a total of $850,000 was needed for the project. Currently, around $500,000 of that has been collected. One big fundraising event for the school is its annual auction, the 45th edition of which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10. WFCS, founded in 1941, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley, Solanco and Unionville-Chadds Ford area school districts. Busing is provided, and financial aid is available. The school is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, adjacent to Octorara Area School District’s primary campus.
