Organizers of this year’s Moores Memorial Library golf tournament on Sept. 28 are (from left) board member Robin Coffroth, tournament co-chair; library board president Bob Stanley, tournament co-chair; board member John Esworthy with Aili; Joan Esworthy, secretary of the Friends of the Library; Karen Woods, treasurer of the Friends, with Daisy; and board member Gerry Woods.
Golf Tournament To Benefit Christiana Library The 11th annual Christiana Moores Memorial Library Golf Tournament, presented by the library board and the Friends of the Library, will be held at the Tanglewood Manor Golf Course, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, on Monday, Sept. 28. A light lunch will be available at noon, followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost of the tournament includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch, dinner, snacks and beverages. “While the tournament is in progress, we always have a refreshment cart circulating the course offering snacks and beverages to all the golfers,” said Joan Esworthy, secretary of the Friends of the Library. There will be a number of contests and prizes throughout the day, including closest-to-the-pin, longest drive for men and for ladies
and a putting contest. Prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place teams, plus there will be a cash prize for a hole-in-one, compliments of Hershey Motors. On-course refreshments will be served throughout the day and door prizes will be offered, including gift cards to Walmart and Dutch-Way Farm Market and Restaurant in Gap. “We have a lot of gift certificates for hair salons and eating places,” said Esworthy, adding that one of the prizes will be a television. This year’s goodie bags will feature some additional gifts. “We always give a goodie bag to each golfer. This year, it will contain a mask (made of) material with a golf pattern and a bottle of hand sanitizer,” Esworthy said. “There is always a towel and a sleeve of balls and hard candy to (enjoy) while they (play).” Prior to scheduling this year’s tournament, organizers wanted to
make sure that the event would be safe for all golfers. “We made a trip over to the golf course and talked to the manager,” Esworthy reported. “There were golfers there, and (the golf course staff members) are following all the guidelines that are given to them by the Department of State.” She said that organizers expect a good turnout for this year’s event. “We usually have around 45 golfers and we are already up to 40, and we are happy about that,” noted Esworthy. The upcoming tournament is for amateur golfers only. No prizes will be awarded to professionals. Proceeds will go directly to the funding of the Moores Memorial Library operation. Patrons of the library enjoy free use of computers, books, CDs and many children’s programs, including a weekly story time on Facebook and a Movie Night, which is co-sponsored by the
Iris Gray Dowling of Cochranville recently released a children’s book titled “Toads: Friends You Never Thought You Had.”
“Frogs are mostly commonly found around water. If you don’t have water, you are seeing a toad,” Dowling noted. “(In the book), I drew pictures of the frog and toad and put facts on the page so people could see the difference.” See Local Author pg 3

Local author Iris Gray Dowling of Cochranville has combined her background as a teacher with her love of nature to write a new picture book for children titled “Toads: Friends You Never Thought You Had.” The book’s illustrations, which explain the life cycle of the toad and detail the differences between frogs and toads, were drawn or photographed by Dowling, along with other family members and friends who live in the area. “The two children in the story start out with comparing a frog and a toad because one of the boys wants to take (the animal) he thinks is a frog to a frog race and the other says, ‘It’s not a frog; it’s a toad,’” explained Dowling. “I consider (the book suitable) for kindergarten through elementary school students. It’s definitely suited for older people to talk with their children about.” According to Dowling, frogs have longer legs than toads and smooth or slimy skin. Toads are generally brown and have short legs and bumpy skin.

Members of Chester County’s COVID-19 Business Task Force, selected as the Economic Cabinet, met recently with county industry leaders to begin addressing the county’s efforts for economic recovery necessitated by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The task force’s plan for economic recovery, led by Chester County Planning Commission executive director Brian O’Leary and the Chester County Economic Development Council, is divided into two phases. Phase 1 of the economic recovery plan focuses on short-term strategies for the 21 industry sectors identified on the Restore Chester County website, www.restore chestercounty.org. Industry leaders from each of those 21 sectors will identify shortterm, actionable steps needed
to stabilize businesses and the economy in Chester County. Phase 2 will be a larger, broader long-term recovery plan, addressing overall recovery from the economic impacts of COVID-19 and how the county can further strengthen its economic viability in the future. The county has appointed two consultancies to support the next phase of economic recovery. 4ward Planning will provide a local perspective to economic development plans and TIP Strategies, which helped to create and drive Chester County’s economic development strategy VISTA See Task Force pg 7

She was a teacher for more than 25 years in Chester County elementary schools and has done homeschool evaluations for the Pennsylvania Accreditation Agency for 30 years. She has worked on the Historical Commissions of Upper Oxford and Oxford Area Historical Association (OAHA). “I wrote a book titled ‘History of Churches in the Oxford Area’ for OAHA,” she noted. “I wrote several other books about happenings in sections of Chester County where I have lived. My total years in Chester County are well over 65-plus years.” For more information about the new book and book sales, readers may email dowlingiris013@ gmail.com.

The book also explains the life cycle of toads, from eggs to tadpoles to the adult toad. “Toads are a true friend of the gardener, and more appreciation needs to be shown to them for the job they do in getting rid of pests,” Dowling noted. She said that the book took at least a year to write. “Believe it or not, this is version No. 23. My grandson, Robert, who is 24 years old, helped me with the story. I read it to him and he listened again (and again) after changes,” Dowling said. “I gave him credit as being my writing assistant. He also helped me with the computer.” Dowling’s latest book is one of several she has written about nature. “I am interested in nature and have always been,” Dowling said. “In 2012, I wrote ‘Nature Stories With a Twist.’ I have done a book on butterflies and the praying mantis.” Dowling shared that part of her reason to write about nature is to encourage children and youths to appreciate the world around them. “I want to motivate people to get out and look and see what’s out there,” she said. “In this day and age, as a former teacher, I believe kids are doing too much in the house and not getting outside. They need to see nature more. That is one of my main aims.” Dowling was born in Upper Oxford, went to an Upper Oxford one-room school and graduated from Oxford High

The tutoring program, a partnership between the Chester County Library and Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), has continued throughout the coronavirus pandemic. “We currently have many pairs working together virtually via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp or telephone,” said Debbie Rikess, Adult Tutoring Program coordinator. “A few pairs are meeting outside as the weather permits. We are asking that pairs meet two times per week for an hour to an hour and a half.” She said the success of the program depends on the volunteers, and there is currently an urgent need for tutors. “The only requirement for volunteers is that they have a bachelor’s degree; no experience is necessary,” Rikess explained. “Tutor training is offered online through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.” Every effort is made to match students with the tutors who can provide them with the most help. “Once the training is complete, volunteers are matched with a student of their choosing based on level, time and the student’s goals. We will share the many free online resources that are available and help (tutors) create a lesson plan,” said Rikess. “Geographically, it doesn’t really matter right now (where the students and tutors live) because pairs are working virtually. But all of our students are Chester County residents.” Before students are matched with a tutor, their skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have.

Gifts That Give Hope Fair Moves Online A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description
of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular. Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we can refocus on what’s important.” COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions also encouraged the changes in how the fair will be held this year. “We decided to keep it virtual,” said Knepper,
who added that the organization will be spotlighting 30 nonprofit organizations that have taken part in the fair previously. “The sponsors that would normally have been our supporters are going through a tough time, so we are trying to have minimal overhead costs,” she explained. She added that, as in the past, there will be variety in the organizations that are featured and that both local and global nonprofits will be included. Local organizations that will be featured in the 2020 GTGH are Milagro House, SWAN, Music for Everyone, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, The Common Wheel, and Power Packs Project. Other area
nonprofits that will be highlighted are Lifecycles, The Edible Classroom, Mom’s House, Aarons Acres, Faith Friendship Community of Mountville, the Lancaster Junior League, Nurse Family Partnership, North Star Initiative, Clare House Lancaster, Church World Service Lancaster, and Advoz. Organizations with further-reaching missions are Feed My Starving Children, World Bicycle Relief, Connection Ubuntu, Habitat for Humanity, Rafiki Africa Foundation, Brittany’s Hope, HOPE International, Heifer Project,Vickie’s Angel Foundation, Outreach Paraguay, Siloam Ethiopia, and Meals on Wheels.

PMEA Announces Cancellation The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) continues to monitor the changing landscape in education as schools deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. The PMEA state board has approved the suspension of all inperson student events for the 2020-21 school year for the safety of the students, members, and all others involved. This includes the PMEA district, region and all-state festivals; district level fests; and Music Performance Assessments (adjudication). The safety of students and members is paramount, and, as these events involve students from multiple schools and
school districts from throughout the commonwealth, it is essential to PMEA to limit any potential risk of COVID-19 infection. PMEA continues to support music educators and students in Pennsylvania with enhanced professional development, open forums, and advocacy work. PMEA will hold a virtual conference and all-state event in the spring. The organization will also assist the PMEA districts in hosting their own virtual events, should they choose to do so. Readers may visit www.pmea.net or contact Phil Stattel at phil.stattel@pmea.net for more information.
