T
he Christiana Historical Society (CHS) will hold its annual Christiana Heritage Days event on Friday, Sept. 11, through Sunday, Sept. 13. The celebration will include music, food, historical displays, children’s activities and guided wagon tours throughout the town. Visitors will also be able to learn about the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place 175 years ago on Sept. 11, 1851. “ That’s why we always have (Heritage Days) at that time frame,” said CHS member Patti Shrom. “We’re trying to make it extra special for families.” Activities will be centered around the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana, which is the CHS’s headquarters. Other events will take place within walking distance at the Christiana Freight Station, 10 Railroad Ave.; the Christiana Masonic Lodge,

the outside,” said CHS member Charlene Ranck. “ There’s still windows, ceiling and painting here that still needs to be done, but it’s sturdy enough that we can have 50 or more persons out here.” The opening event will be on Friday, when the Barlee Red Band and the Days of Old Band will present a concert on the lawn of the See Heritage Days pg 3

Cornerstone Health to Hold “Celebrate Life Fest”
Gap Fire Company has a new addition to the family. On Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at 11 a.m., the company will host an open house and housing ceremony to celebrate its brand new 2026 E-ONE CR-100 Cyclone aerial ladder truck. Located at 802 Pequea Ave., Gap, the new truck will assist the allvolunteer fire company with its coverage of parts of Salisbury, Sadsbury and Paradise Townships.

Cornerstone Reproductive Health’s 12th annual Celebrate Life Fest and Walk for Life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at New Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 R anck Road, New Holland. The event, formerly known as just the Walk for Life, will feature a 5K walk, cornhole tournament and a host of children’s activities. “It’s just encompassing more of that festival feel,” said Olivia Imchen, event organizer. “It had become more than just a 5K walk. … We wanted to incorporate all of that in the name, too, just to let people know that it’s a fun family event.” This year will be the third time the event has been held in New Holland. The annual event was moved in 2024 to be more central to the ministry’s service area. Bad weather mired the event’s maiden voyage in New Holland, but Cornerstone’s fortunes improved last year. “It wasn’t ideal, but it was definitely better than previous years,” Imchen said. “It rained the day before, but not the day of. The day of turned out to be pretty nice.” The walk and amateur cornhole tournament will both start at 9 a.m. Preregistration is required for the cornhole tournament and can be done online by visiting www.cornerstonesupporters .org/event/celebrate-life-fest/. Day-of registration will be available for the 5K walk. Registration by Thursday, Sept. 17, guarantees placement in the cornhole tournament,

Gap Fire Company was incorporated in 1910 and chartered in 1924 and can be reached by calling 717-442-8100. The housing ceremony coincides with the time of year where the company typically hosts an open house, so the events have been combined for this fall. At the event, there will be food trucks, fire safety demonstrations and firefighting demonstrations. The event is free to attend, and company merchandise will be available for purchase. “They get to watch us cut apart a car,” said Joe Kennedy, assistant fire chief. “While we’re doing it, we usually have somebody, usually me, kind of narrate it. We use it not just as a demonstration, but also some education, so that kids kind of get an idea that vehicle accidents can be scary, but don’t worry, the fire department’s here to rescue you.” The new truck was purchased at a cost of $1,427,161, $700,000 of which came from support from Salisbury Township. Painted bright yellow and custom built for Gap Fire Company, the new addition has been years in the making. “We have actually been working on this for about the last six or seven years now,” Kennedy said. “(The township) set aside a decent chunk of money each year, specifically designed for apparatus replacement. We’re keeping the lights on, our day-to-day expenses are fine, but there’s no amount of ham and oyster suppers we can do to overcome a $1.4 million price tag.” In August, the company hosted nearby Pequea Valley Fire Company, Christiana Fire Company and White Horse Fire Company to get a first look at the new truck.

Company logos will be printed on various materials for the event, including on custom cornhole boards. The deadline for

The trail is a mile long; participants will do the loop three times to complete the 5K distance. The walk is open to people of all ages, and prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and group of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships. Children who walk the trail will receive a passport booklet they can have stamped at various spots. The cornhole tournament was
within the church’s fence. “It’s perfect for kids,” Straub said. “We have all the kids’ activities inside the fence, so the parents can see them at all times and where they’re running around, so that’s really nice, too.” Free food will be offered throughout the day, including hot dogs, popcorn and chips. Free water has also been donated by the Parkesburg Grocery Outlet. Cornerstone serves as a resource for women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. It offers free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, prenatal services, and parenting incentive programs, along with other services. We had a good range of people attend.” The CHS will be taking preorders for merchandise commemorating the 175th anniversary of the resistance. All proceeds benefit the CHS and its ongoing restoration of the Brinton House, which is associated with the resistance and was reportedly a stop on the Underground Railroad network. The society’s Heritage Days celebration has been held annually since 2001. There is record of Heritage Days in the 20th century, but the event was not held continuously annually. Shrom emphasized that the organization is always looking for new members. CHS hosts a “Saturdays on the Porch” program every first Saturday of the month from April through November; it has done so since 2024. We’ll be highlighting most of the homes in this area that would range down from the early 1800s, 1833 and right up through.” Also Saturday, the Moores Memorial Library and Christiana Borough Hall will be open for the event. There is a diorama commemorating the resistance that will be opening up at the latter; the library also has a display with some history of the resistance. Members of the society emphasized that attendees at the event are not to walk across the railroad tracks at any time. Instead, they are asked to use the nearby underpass to safely cross the tracks. The anniversary of the resistance is incredibly meaningful to Darlene Colon, society president, who is a descendant of one of the resistance’s participants. The society is always searching for more descendants of the Christiana Resistance; the society is planning for a group photo of descendants during the event. The Heritage Days celebration will conclude on Sunday with Friendship Day, which will include a community church service with

We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Nursery Operations Specialist to keep our woody, plant nursery running smoothly. This hands-on role splits time between the plants, maintenance, and nursery operations. You will be responsible for operating equipment (tractors and skid steers), driving 16’ and 26’ box trucks for local deliveries, assisting in facility maintenance, and participating in the hands-on growing of plants. Horticultural work may include but is not limited to seed collection, propagation, shearing, pruning, and staking of plants. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors and possesses the physical strength to regularly lift 30-35 pounds. The work is seasonal in nature, requiring longer hours in the Spring/Fall and shorter hours in the Summer/Winter. Assistance with weekend duties during the growing season is required, this is a shared responsibility and generally occurs every 3rd weekend.
