Atglen Community Day To Feature Food, Crafters, Music And More A scaled-down version of Atglen Community Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Atglen Community Park, 404 Ridge Ave., with consideration for safety being a top priority. “We wrestled with whether we should cancel or (not) cancel,” said Cristi Hahn, office coordinator for Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, which will present the eighth annual event. “We are asking everyone to follow all CDC and state recommendations. We really want it to be a safe event.” The Community Day event is organized by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church deacons, with support of Atglen Borough, Atglen Public Library (APL) and sponsoring businesses, including Summers & Zim’s Inc. and J.D. Eckman Inc. Several features of the Community Day have been dropped for this year. There will be no bounce houses, dunk tank, games or Apple Festival contests. Instead of the live auction, there will be a small silent auction and a chance to win prizes

through a random drawing. That does not mean there will not be plenty to do. Included in the day’s events will be food, including chicken barbecue, hot dogs, French fries and beverages. Crafters and vendors will have booths along the fence in the Atglen Community Park with 10by-10-foot spaces. “We have a lot more room to work with in the park,” Hahn said. Vendors will sell items such as books, jewelry and gourmet food items. Those who would like to reserve a space may do so by emailing Maureen.K.Fox@ gmail.com. There will be entertainment until 3 p.m. Critter Connection will bring live animals and reptiles to view, and Steel City Gymnastics will also perform. Featured will be Matt Holub on acoustic guitar. Visitors may bring their own blankets and chairs for seating and listen in the park with social distancing. I saw the property and it never sold, and when it came back on the market, I was very interested and went about getting the loans.” In addition to rescuing dogs, Lucky Dawg also fosters kittens and cats until they are adopted. Some cats rescued by the organization but not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, including the ones at 144 Eagleview Blvd. in Lionville and 408 Commons Drive in Parkesburg. Shoppers Invited To Thrift Store Clothing for men, women and children, along with an assortment of housewares, home décor, collectibles, books and toys, can all be found at the Righteous Clothing Thrift Store, 317 Main St., Parkesburg. A ministry of Parkesburg United Methodist Church, the shop is open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m., on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Items in the thrift store, which are donated by the congregation and community members, are new or gently used and are displayed in a boutique-like setting. Volunteers encourage community members to stop by to shop for quality items offered at reasonable prices. “We have

clothing for infants up to adults, (including) plus sizes,” said Jody Bush, chairperson. In order to make room for fall and winter clothing, the shop is currently offering a “buy one, get two free” clothing special through Saturday, Sept. 12. Bush operates the store along with 12 other volunteers. One of the volunteers is Heather Winward, who previously managed the store for 20 years. “I took over for her a year ago,” said Bush. Bush share that people have been very generous with their donations, noting that higher-end items are often available to shoppers. “People are giving us their collectibles,” she noted. “We get brand-new clothing with tags. We had a red blazer last winter with a $199 price tag on it. It was beautifully made.”

We give back to our church and PCCO, which is Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach,” she explained. “When there is a fire or a family in need that needs clothing, PCCO gives them a voucher and they come over and they are given five outfits each - shoes, clothing and brand-new underwear. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and they do not have to be members of the church. “We are open for two hours at a time,” Bush said, noting that the time frame makes it ideal for volunteers. “We have volunteers in their 70s and a few in their 80s who are retired ladies and have a lot of fun doing this and have met a lot of friends through the years.” The shop is also in need of donations. Donations of inseason items are accepted during the shop’s operating hours or by appointment. Items that are not offered for sale in the store are donated to the Goodwill Store in Coatesville. Other events will run from 11:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. The event will be smaller than in previous years, but it will feature special entertainment. For the first time, the Scottish games will include athletes from Covenanter Homeland Games with participants from 11 states. The remainder of the program will feature music by Charlie Zahm, Fire in the Glen, and Kendrah Tozzo. There will also be a tribute to Robert Burns, a “Tam O’ Shanter” presentation, a haggis ceremony, a “Kirkin” O’ Th’ Tartans ceremony, and Scottish and American foods. Tickets will be limited to 200. The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets in-store pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walk-up customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www.giantfood stores.com/flushot or www .martinsfoods.com/flushot. In addition to the drive-up flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children,

Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and drive-up vaccinations. Each year, the Brandywine Health Foundation celebrates its outgoing board members for their leadership, time and talents. The outgoing board chair is Jason D. Alexander, principal and co-founder of Capacity for Change LLC. Alexander guided the board over the last three years and will remain a board member. As board chair, he moved the organization from charity to philanthropy in order to support sustained community impact. Alexander helped transform the foundation by leading the implementation of a new strategic direction and was instrumental in streamlining board committees, which created more opportunity for mission aligned strategic action. The new board chair for 2020 is Richard C. In his new role as board chair, he plans to focus on several issues of importance to the greater Coatesville community, including the continued embrace of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility for all residents.
