Angie’s Stray Foundation Seeks Pet Fosters, Adopters

With the hope of finding permanent, loving homes for dogs and cats currently in foster care, volunteers from Angie’s Stray Foundation brought a few furry friends to the Christiana Parks and Recreation farmers market on Aug. 16. The event, held on the grounds of the Brinton House, offered visitors a chance to meet adoptable pets and learn more about the foundation’s mission to give every stray a second chance.

During the event, volunteers handed out bags of candy along with information about the foundation. Also on hand were several kittens found as strays that are currently available for adoption. “They are 14 weeks old and all girls,” noted foundation volunteer Shelby Moran. Visitors were also able to meet

Cornflake, a male American Shorthair cat, who is FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)-positive. Since the disease is primarily transmitted through deep bites, Moran said that with proper care, FIV-positive cats can live long, healthy lives.

“Cornflake is 3 years old. He was a stray. He’s been in foster for about

six months,” said Moran. “He has FIV, which is manageable with a daily immune supplement. Old science said that FIV was incredibly contagious, but research has changed and it’s hard to transmit, so you can mingle FIV positive and negative cats if they don’t fight. He is living with three other cats currently, and

chairs and blankets for seating. There is an admission fee. Go to www.covenanter scottishfestival.com for additional information.

A total of approximately 75 men and women from across the country will compete in traditional Scottish games such as the hammer toss, sheaf toss, caber throw, and brae mar stone lift. Trophies will be awarded to the winners.

Freedom Life Church To Offer Ministry School

Freedom Life Church, 789 Gap Newport Pike, Atglen, has announced open enrollment for the Freedom Life Ministry School, a leadership training program designed for young men and women who are considering a career in the church.

Open to individuals ages 17 to 24, the part-time program will be offered over the course of nine months, beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Classes will take place on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; on Wednesdays from noon to 8 p.m.; and on Sundays from 7 a.m. to noon.

“Everyone who is involved will help to serve during youth group, which is on Wednesday nights,” explained pastor Ezra Buckwalter. “On Sundays, they will be at the church to serve from 7 a.m. to noon for both services.”

There will be a tuition to take part in the program, which goes to accredited Bible courses being offered through Destiny Leadership Institute. Courses will include Old and New Testament Survey, Servant Leadership and Christian Foundations. “These (studies),” noted Buckwalter. Through the course of the pro gram, students will also take part in a retreat, a visit to the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C., a conference at Wave Church in Virginia Beach and a service trip to the Philadelphia Dream

There will be mini versions of the games for children to try.

As usual, music will play an integral role in the event. Fire in the Glen will perform Scottish-Irish music and Chivalrous Crickets will play Celtic tunes. The Philadelphia & District Pipe Band has played every Covenanter Scottish Festival and will be back.

Gaelic School of Baltimore will be in The Language Village and teach some basics of the Scottish-Gaelic language through poetry and songs. There will also be a sanctioned piping competition.

Awards will be presented for the best clans, and genealogy information will be available. Gene

Sheninger will provide sheep- and duck-herding demonstrations.

Boy Scout Troop 87 will sell water, soda, and tea, and Country Gals will sell ribs, chicken barbecue, hamburgers, and hot dogs.

Scottish favorites shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash will be on the menu.

There will be an opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m., featuring welcome remarks by Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation president John Girvin. The national anthem and “Scotland the Brave” will be performed.

John’s father, Barry, will provide tours of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church and museum, where he is the curator. The church

and museum are located across the street from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church.

Barry will discuss the history of both of the churches as well as everything that is in the museum, including items related to the church’s history, Scottish history, and Bart Township school history. There are photos dating back to when the Amish attended public schools, in addition to what Barry calls “priceless artifacts.”

“One of my favorites is a Bible that a guy carried throughout the Civil War,” Barry said. “Many of the people that settled here had Scottish-Irish roots, and they all kind of tied in with all these Presbyterian churches that you had in this area.”

Barry said one of his favorite parts of the event is the Haggis Ceremony, which honors the Scottish delicacy.

“The person who does a ceremony cuts the haggis and presents it another member of the ceremony who gets to taste a haggis, and then he also gets a

shot at scotch. He normally says, ‘The haggis is good, and the scotch is good.’

Then you have to pay the piper.” Foundation board member Jonathan Welch said, “I think (the festival) is a tangible link to people’s individual heritage. When you’re asking yourself where do I come from, and what is the culture and the heritage associated with that? I think that’s also a big draw. And to kind of link that up with things to do makes it enjoyable. You can be studious in your search for your family history, but then also kind of enjoy the other side of it as well.”

“The whole festival began with the idea to help raise funds,” John said. “Everything we’re doing is to help raise funds for the restoration and maintenance of the (Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian) church and museum.” The foundation has funded numerous projects, including the stabilization of the building, and most recently painting the outside of the church.

Pre-registration is appreciated, but vendors may register on the morning of the event. For more information or to reserve a space call the church at 717-786-3402 or Dan Henry at 717-381-9947. Henry said there is expected to be more than 100 tables with items such as household goods, tools, games, puzzles, clothes, and toys. “We do get quite a variety of items,” Henry said. “Because we

Yard Sale

have so many different items here, there’s pretty much something for everyone who’s interested in yard sales. It is a huge, huge yard sale, and then we also have good food.”

Breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, baked goods, and beverages will be sold.

All the proceeds from the event will benefit Joyfully Made Fellowship, a ministry for people with special needs.

“We got involved with Joyfully Made partially because their

students come to our vacation Bible school every summer,” Henry said. “That’s a real blessing to us. The other students get to interact with the special needs students, and the special needs students are just a joy to be around. We just love them to come and participate with us. We know that Tami Shaub and her helpers just do an excellent job with that ministry, and our church feels a desire and a calling to support them and participate with them.”

Dan Henry, one of organizers Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church’s yard sale, shows examples of some of the items that can be purchased at the upcoming sale.

he plays well with others.”

The rescue is currently in need of fosters to temporarily house pets until their forever home is found, as well as adopters.

“We have fosters who (care for) dogs, cats and do both,” said Moran, noting that the foster application and adoption application are available on the foundation website. “We, like all rescues, vet all of our adopters. Our goal is to find the best possible home for that particular animal.”

She noted that there is a current need for people to foster unwanted cats and kittens. “With cats in particular, there are stray kittens everywhere right now. People will

let us know that a mom showed up and there are kittens in their yard,” said Moran. “People find strays sick or neglected.”

She said that fosters may find it hard to surrender the pet when a permanent home is found, but that gives them an opportunity to care for other animals in need. “The saving grace is that most adopters send pictures and keep in touch. When you get that picture, it helps,” Moran shared. “Plus, you can save others. Right now, we have a waiting list for people who have stray cats that need help.” In addition to fosters and adopters, the foundation is in need of financial donations to purchase pet

food and cat litter and to pay for veterinary services.

“Donations for the rescue are accepted electronically. They can also send a donation to Elk Creek Veterinary Hospital in Oxford. That is who we primarily use for care,” Moran explained. “People can donate to them. They have an Angie’s Stray Foundation Fund that they keep for us.”

Angie’s Stray Foundation is named after a dog that belonged to Ruth Jenkins, the founder and president of the foundation. Angie was abused and near death but recovered under Jenkins’ care. She founded the rescue to care for other abused and neglected animals.

“Ruth Jenkins is the one who got Angie and nursed her back to health and named the rescue in her honor,” said Moran. “This is why we do what we do. We do it for (Angie) and those like her.”

Life’s Bumpy Road

Those who know me probably have figured out that I am a charter member of clumsy nation. If something can be dropped, burned, spilled, broken, fallen over, lost, shattered or slipped on, I can do it. And most of the time, that is before lunch.

In addition to my own knack for living the messiest life possible, life itself also hands us hardships. It seems that when we are running late or in a hurry, that is when we get behind a large truck filled with hay that is moving slowly along the road with no opportunity to pass.

Same is true when carrying a large basket of laundry and a sock drops out. Then, you bend over to pick up that runaway sock, and suddenly even more pieces of clothing fall out, and it happens again, and so it goes. Then there is the weeklong vacation that has been a year in the planning, and it rains the entire time.

And what about those missing socks that somehow never make it out of the drier or those plastic storage containers always missing lids?

It’s all kind of like Alanis Morissette’s song, “Ironic,” which laments that there is always “rain on your wedding day,” “a free ride when you’ve already paid” and “10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife.” I’m not sure this is the true definition of irony, but it does reflect some of life’s frustrations.

How many of us have left a steaming cup of coffee (or, in my case, tea) on the top of the car roof when pulling away? Who has searched for their cellphone while using it or tried to locate glasses that are sitting on their head? What about using baking soda in a recipe when it calls for baking powder, or leaving home in a hurry with the TV remote or house phone instead of the cellphone?

I still have yet to explain how the remote control to the TV wound up in our refrigerator. I can tell you, however, some of my own stories like the time I used the restroom at a local convenience store. There were no hooks to hang my handbag, so I placed it in the sink, and of course, it was one of these

automatic ones and my purse filled with water. Then there was the time I dropped the hose when pumping gas. It hit the ground and splattered me.

When life becomes like traveling a bumpy road, it is always important to remember that the way to survive is to keep a sense of humor. The ability to laugh and to laugh at oneself is crucial.

So next time you are out with friends, do not bore them with complaints about work or brag about your kids or your pets. Instead, tell them your funny stories. Talk about the coffee cup left on the car roof, the purse that filled with water and how you once wore a gasoline-splattered shirt. It will make them laugh, and it will make you laugh. And we all need that.

There is a video going around on social media that features a little boy who falls off his bike. When he gets up, he shakes himself off and begins to dance. The caption reads, “It’s not how you fall; it’s how you get up.” And that life lesson is not ironic.

Ministry School

While at Freedom Life, attendees will learn about all aspects of church life, including worship, media, children’s ministry, pastoral leadership and creative arts. “Everybody from our pastoral team, creative team and worship team will meet with the students,” Buckwalter said. “You get a hands-on church experience and some behind of scenes of what (the operation of a church) looks like.”

Buckwalter said the program is designed for people who want to make sure that a career path in ministry is right for them. Because it is part time, they can continue to work a regular job while exploring options at Freedom Life. “Maybe (someone) just graduated and they are not sure what they want to do,” he said. “They can still work, grow in this area and get close to the church.”
