Local Resident Creates “Kindness Rocks” Garden By Francine Fulton
The Kindness Rock Project, which originated in Cape May, N.J., is a nationwide initiative where people paint small rocks with images or inspirational sayings and leave them for others to find and collect. Locally, Elizabeth Dastalfo has created a Kindness Rocks garden in the front yard at her home, located at 118 Newport Circle, Atglen. Local residents are invited to take rocks from the garden or add their own rocks. before coming to COB. “We were doing a revitalization of a church up there. We started at 40 (congregation members), and when I left, it was at 300,” he noted. “My wife, Beka, was the children’s director. We felt God tugging at us to leave and find a church that needed help.” Bailey said that he and Beka submitted their resumes to a church catalyst. “These are people that work with different churches and are not part of a church, but they have their ears to the ground,” Bailey explained. “Somehow, Pennsylvania got ahold of our resumes and Gary Becker, the (COB) interim pastor, reached out to us.” The family briefly moved from Massachusetts to stay at Cedar Lane Missionary Homes in New Jersey before relocating and finding a home in Gap. “We ended up selling our home in Massachusetts, and a few weeks or a month later, COB wanted us to come and do a parking lot service,” Bailey stated, noting that his official start See Church pg 7

The Bird-in-Hand Stage, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, has several years of presenting live entertainment, including local performers interspersed with original Blue Gate Musicals shows focused on the Plain community. Starting in 2016, Brett and Labrina Myers provided shows for Birdin-Hand before preparing to open their own Magic and Wonder Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Bird-in-Hand’s 2020 season was slated to start on April 2. Magic and Wonder’s first show ever in the venue, “Worlds of Wonder,” was planned to launch on See Area Theaters pg 4
MOPC Will Host Two-Day Yard Sale By Dayna M. Reidenouer
In a year when organizations are scaling back events, the mission committee of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville, has expanded its annual yard sale. The event was postponed from its original date in April. “We’re having it on two days instead of one to spread it out a little bit,” explained mission committee member and yard sale coordinator Dan Henry, expressing the hope that the extended time will

Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health interim chief executive officer (CEO) Vikram Acharya began serving a three-year term on the board of directors for the Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) on July 1. CVIM is a nonprofit organization that provides medical care to people without health insurance who live or work in Chester County. CVIM’s mission is to provide access to comprehensive, highquality health care to low-income, working families who have no insurance. CVIM provides preventative, holistic care and treatment in order to help people avoid unnecessary visits to hospital emergency departments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, CVIM focused on keeping patients healthy by providing essential medical care primarily via telehealth, prioritizing behavioral health services, performing emergency dental procedures and dispensing prescription medications. CVIM’s officials anticipate a surge in people needing the organization’s services in the coming months due to the economic downturn and loss of jobs and

It drives people crazy.” and “I’m not weird. I am a limited edition.” “My whole family, (which includes 10 children), will tell me when people are at the rock garden,” said Dastalfo. “I am floored by the number of adults that stop and exchange rocks while they are walking the dog or walking together as a couple.” She noted that anybody can paint rocks, including children. “I am not an artist,” she said. “I (use) pencil on Santorini Stones, which are white rocks, and use acrylic paint markers or basic markers but not Sharpies because they run,” she explained. “I look up inspirational quotes online.” Dastalfo said painting rocks during her illness was a way to the pass the time and pass on kindness to others. “My motto and the way I beat cancer is ‘One day. One rock. One smile at the time,’” she stated. “That’s how we get through life.” Dastalfo offers rocks for sale, as well as rock-making kits and instruction. One message at just the right time can change your entire day or outlook.” Dastalfo said she joined the Kindness Rock movement last September. “I was diagnosed with cancer on Sept. 20, 2019. The following day we were scheduled to have a vacation at the beach,” she explained. “We were walking on the beach in Wildwood and I found a Kindness Rock. It was a horrific day, but (the rock) made me smile. From that moment on, I started painting rocks. I painted 1,666 rocks between the day I was diagnosed and March 25 on my last day of (treatment). It was part of my journey.” Dastalfo, who survived her bout with cancer, created the rock garden in front of her home in May. “Neighbors and people who walked by traded them out. I noticed that the rocks started changing,” she said. “For instance, there are some really big rocks with Scriptures on them that were the first to appear. I never noticed them being placed there, but they have been there for a few months now.” She shared that people of all ages enjoy looking through the rocks, many of which feature inspirational messages such as “Do

The proceeds from the yard sale will complement MOPC’s support of a church and school in Tamshiyacu, Peru. MOPC members have traveled to Tamshiyacu with Dan’s brother, the Rev. Dave Henry, and others from Dave’s church in Missouri at least once a year for almost a decade. This summer’s trip was canceled, but Dave hopes to visit in January 2021. He tries to visit Tamshiyacu twice a year, taking anti-parasite medication with him for the children in the village at local doctors’ request. “We are so disappointed we could not visit our friends in the Amazon this summer, and we especially miss the children and hosting Bible school in our sister church village of Tamshiyacu,� Boni commented. “We plan to continue to support the folks there and share the love of Jesus and His lifesaving message with them.�
Although the mission committee could not travel to Peru this year, it has continued to strive to meet needs there. Boni explained that because of COVID-19, the need for assistance is greater than ever, and the committee has expanded its support beyond Tamshiyacu. “We have supplied a lot of medicine and personal protective equipment to help fight the coronavirus in the city of Iquitos,� she said. Iquitos is the city the mission team flies into before taking a boat several hours up the Amazon to Tamshiyacu, Dan explained. The head nurse at an Iquitos hospital is also employed by Medical Missions, which MOPC has partnered with in Tamshiyacu. The mission committee has sent funds to the nurse to buy supplies for the hospital and hopes to send more. A small fee will be charged for outdoor space rental at the yard sale, with proceeds also going to the mission committee. Vendors must supply their own tables. Additionally, the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women typically have a clothing giveaway in August, but the event was canceled this year. The women had amassed a collection of clothing, however, so they gave it to the mission committee to sell. “We’ll sell it for a dollar a bag to help people who are going back to school,� Dan said. “It’s not quite a giveaway, but almost.�

The Magic and Wonder Theater opened on July 20 with adherence to COVID-19 protocols. show focuses on an Amish couple in their mid-40s looking back over 20 years of marriage. At Magic and Wonder, tables are placed six feet apart and masks must be worn while in common areas. Sanitizing occurs before, during, and after each show, and all employees undergo a temperature check and answer five Centers for Disease Control and Prevention questions before being allowed to work. Although the building will hold 500 people, the venue is currently only accommodating 125 guests at a time. Bird-in-Hand opened with local favorite Ryan and Friends presenting a show called “Comedy and Calamity.” “It’s a very family-friendly show with ventriloquism and comedy,” said Buda Moser, who noted that Ryan and his five puppet friends made their debut on the Bird-in-Hand stage with this presentation. “We were looking for a family option with comedy that would appeal to a variety of audiences,” added Buda Moser. Ryan and friends opened Aug. 8, with shows running through Saturday, Oct. 17. “The GÜT Life,” starring Nathan Garner as Simon Yoder and Monica DePaul as his wife, Eliza, will run from Thursday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Oct. 23. Buda Moser explained that the

they first envisioned a theater. “We were just back from a tour in Texas,” recalled Brett of the latenight walk he and his wife took outside their Lancaster farmhouse. “We saw thousands of fireflies decorating the night sky, and we experienced a moment of wonder that takes your breath away,” he recalled. “We knew we wanted to create a show that wasn’t about tricking or fooling, (but) about sparking creativity and wonder in all of us.” The result is a team effort that Brett says fuses grand illusions, comedy, and dynamic circus arts, including the Cyr wheel and an aerial performance by Labrina. “I designed this for people of all ages,” Brett said of the familyfriendly show that includes levitation, an appearance by Brett and Labrina’s children, and making a likeness of the Statue of Liberty appear. Magic and Wonder is offering free tickets to firefighters, police officers, EMTs, activeduty and retired military personnel, and health care workers through Saturday, Sept. 5. We’ve updated the front porch and put in new pillars. It’s facelift stuff - giving it a fresh feeling,” said Bailey, noting that future plans call for the installation of new church signs. “We want people to know we are here.” Right now, the church is offering online worship. The Sunday service includes a mix of worship music that includes traditional and modern songs. “Purposeful worship is one of our core values. We will sing a song because of what it says and what it means,” Bailey noted. “We will have a worship band, but we do not have a smoke machine. There will be a balance, and it will be purposeful.” Bailey also hopes to hold community events, such as the Movies on the Lawn that have been held at COB throughout the summer. “We will be community-based,” he said. “ We will have barbecues and small groups and life groups and different opportunities to experience and understand what the church is outside of Sundays.” Bailey encourages the community to attend the upcoming reopening celebration, noting that Sept. 20 will be observed nationally as “Back to Church Sunday.” The church is located at 101 E.
