resh produce, flowers and plants, jewelry, furniture pieces, wreaths, artwork, freeze dried candy and handmade goat milk soap and lotion were just some of the items offered for sale at the new Parkesburg Farmers Market held outdoors at Parkesburg Borough Hall, 315 W. First Ave., Parkesburg. Shoppers were also able to enjoy refreshments, including coffee, cupcakes and kettle corn. The market, dubbed “Second on First,” opened on July 8 and will be offered on the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 14 by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), along with Flowers in Bloom and the Little Shop Next Store. The next farmers market will be open on Aug. 12. Local crafters and small businesses are invited to set up a booth at the farmers market. Vendors pay a fee for the space. “It is (open) to artisans only, no direct sales,” said PAC member Tina O’Conner, noting that organizers were pleased with the variety of vendors on opening day. “We did great for our first one. We are very happy. “ Various shoppers, some of whom walked to the market, said they were pleased with the selection of goods. “It was so amazing on a Saturday morning, getting fresh produce and fresh kettle corn,” said Josh Mellinger, a member of Parkesburg Borough Council. Other shoppers included Dana Young, who stated, “(I) loved the assortment of vendors, and the coffee was great.” In addition to the famers market, PAC offers Final Friday, a monthly street fair held on the last Friday of the month from 5 to 9 p.m. in the 200 block of Main Street. The next event will be on Aug. 25, when the theme will be “Dog Days of Summer.”

The Parkesburg Lions Club will hold two community bench dedications on Sunday, July 30. One bench to memorialize Joann Carmen will be dedicated at 3 p.m. at Parkesburg VWF Post 4480, 406 W. Fourth Ave., Parkesburg. The second bench will be dedicated at 4 p.m. at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, to memorialize Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde. Parkesburg Mayor John Hagen will be on hand at both events. Community members who would like
to speak about the two honorees are encouraged to attend the ceremonies. Carmen, who passed away in 2021, was the office manager of the Parkesburg VFW and a supporter of the Keystone Valley Fire Department. “She was in charge of the Parkesburg VFW for many years, and she was amazing,” said Parkesburg Lions Club president Robin McKenna. “We have fundraisers at the VFW, and she was very supportive of the Lions Club.” Carmen’s bench will be placed at the flagpole in front of the VFW, which also dedicated its sunroom in her memory.
