A New Way to Keep Score

Octorara Area Little League has its village.

The league’s homebase, Lions Park in Christiana, needed a new scoreboard on the main field. The new scoreboard, donated by Houghton Enterprises, was recently installed by a group of nearly a dozen dads on a warm Monday night at the park, 4 Sadsbury Ave., Christiana.

The new scoreboard is nearly twice as large as its predecessor and can be controlled remotely and wirelessly from anywhere around the field. Previously, wired cables had to be run from the dugouts to control the scoreboard remotely.

Life Turned Upside Down

Karly Burkhart was only five months removed from treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma when she found out that her youngest son, Grant, was being diagnosed with FOXG1 syndrome, an ultrarare genetic disorder that affects less than 2,000 individuals worldwide.

Many children with FOXG1, sometimes referred to simply as “FOX”, never speak properly. Furthermore, 70% of children with the syndrome never walk independently.

Grant and his older brother, Logan, live on a dairy farm in the Southern End with their parents, Burkhart and Troy Kirk. As you can imagine, making an old farmhouse handicapped-accessible will be no small, nor cheap, challenge for the family.

“The Houghton family has

been what we call our grand slam sponsors,” said Craig Fackler, sponsorship coordinator for the Little League. “The Houghtons have donated everything for the

scoreboard. They have kids in the league; they want to see everything elevated.”

That’s a mouthful, but it means so much to Octorara alumna and Parkesburg native Mallorie Gurel.

Twirling was in Gurel’s blood. Her mom was a baton twirler, which gave her a natural interest in twirling, dancing and cheerleading when she was growing up. She started twirling when she was 9 years old.

“She introduced it to me when I was 7 or 8,” Gurel said. “Then I would beg her to put me in lessons.”

She eventually connected with Wendy Rhoads at Ab-Salute Twirling in Ephrata and began formal training, eventually competing in competitions. Gurel never twirled with Octorara’s marching band, but she was the feature twirler in all her four years at Temple University as part of the school’s Diamond Band.

“I’d say it’s kind of like a mix of dance and gymnastics, kind of like a cheerleader position,” Gurel said. “You’re trying to engage the audience, and it’s a big way to show

“It’s a big fear of ours on how we’re going to figure out how to get him around the farm and the rough terrain,” Burkhart said. “This is our lifestyle, and we can’t really change that. Figuring out how to adapt has been a difficult thing.”

Grant struggles with severe development delays. His parents took him in for genetic testing after he was not hitting milestones that many kids his age were.

While his family is hopeful, there is a strong chance that Grant may never be able to live independently. His only chance of doing so is extensive physical therapy. Many individuals with the syndrome also have to eat out of a feeding tube.

Very little of what Grant will need to survive is covered by insurance.

“We just want what’s best for him,” Burkhart said. “We want to be able to provide the therapies

that we can for him to get the most success that he can have for life.”

A benefit lunch and silent auction will be held for Grant’s family on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Little Britain Mennonite School, 352 Nottingham Road, Quarryville.

There will be a meal by donation consisting of a pulled pork sandwich, potatoes, macaroni salad, baked beans, a dessert and a drink. Southern Press Coffee will also have drinks available for purchase.

Many impressive items have already been donated for the auction, including a Blackstone grill, a KitchenAid mixer, a wine fridge, chainsaws, leaf blowers and Yeti coolers. A

The benefit has been in the works for four or five months, but the idea is much older.

“A couple of our friends wanted to do something for us while I was going through cancer, to help pay for treatment,” Burkhart said. “We didn’t want to do that. Asking for help is hard, but once we figured out Grant’s diagnosis, we knew it was going to take a lot.”

Despite his struggles, Grant was described by his family as being the biggest bundle of joy, smiling from ear to ear with his big blue eyes wide.

“Grant is the happiest little boy,” his mom said. “He has every right to be frustrated or upset, and he’s not. ... He finds so much enjoyment in so

Sadsbury Friends Meeting Sets Historical

Talk

Sadsbury Friends Meeting, 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap, will host a talk by Connie Webster, titled “Caught in the Middle,” on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m.

Webster is a descendant of Quaker Benjamin Gilbert, whose family was taken into captivity in 1780 by Native Americans. The American Revolution was challenging for both pacifist Quakers and Native Americans, and the 1779 Sullivan’s March destroyed the villages of four Native nations allied with the British. A year later, in retaliation, 11 Native Americans captured the Gilbert family of Jim Thorpe and burned their homestead and mill. Over a two-year period, the family endured a march to Montreal, and some of the Gilbert children were adopted by Native families. Although Benjamin did not survive, most of the family members were released and returned to Pennsylvania two years later. Webster will recount their journey.

Even before the benefit, the outreach from the local community and support for the benefit has shocked the family.

“We knew that a lot of people cared about Grant, and planning this benefit has really shown that love and support we felt from friends, family and the community already,” Burkhart said.

Walk Raises Funds for ALS Association

A walk to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, was held in Parkesburg on July 4. The starting point was the lower baseball field of Minch Park. Although the weather was hot, approximately 150 people were in attendance. The event was conceived by the friends and family of Sue Labiak, a longtime resident of Parkesburg who has ALS.

Every participant was asked to make a donation and was given a blue ALS awareness ribbon to wear. The event began at 10 a.m. with opening comments. Labiak and her family led the walk, which was a little over a mile in length. Labiak’s brother and sister-in-law handed out water bottles about halfway through the walk. The water bottles, along with string bags, were provided courtesy of New Holland Heating & Air Conditioning.

Labiak worked at Pepperidge Farm for 40 years, and employees of the company supported the walk. Current Pepperidge Farm employees

donated $880, and the company matched half that amount. An additional $495 was donated by retirees. In addition to the Pepperidge donations, $3,853 was collected at the walk. This amount included $525 from T-shirts made and sold by Alma Morgan

Mahoney.

A total of nearly $5,700 was given in honor of Labiak to the ALS Association. This amount does not include online donations. Organizers plan to make the Parkesburg ALS Walk an annual event in honor of Labiak.

The new scoreboard cost the Houghton family approximately $7,000, Fackler said. Summers & Zim’s donated electrical hardware for the scoreboard, while J&D Smucker Construction provided parts for the scoreboard’s base. Dutch-Way Hardware also assisted with parts for the project.

Behind home plate sits a two-story building that houses a robust concession stand and press box. Three of the four fields at the complex have covered and enclosed dugouts, as well as a fence. Two of the fields also currently have working scoreboards, while parts from the previous scoreboard on the main field will be repurposed for one of the secondary fields.

Another major recent improvement on the main field was a brand-new sound system, donated by Woerth Motor Company. The system allows songs to be played during breaks in action and gives the ability to make announcements for the whole complex.

Little League have a unique privilege that is rare at any level of amateur baseball: walk-up songs. The kids get to choose their own song to be played when they approach the plate; some kids choose classics, while others select songs by contemporary acts like Imagine Dragons and AJR.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Fackler said.

Fall ball registration is open for all divisions and can be found online at www.octoraralittleleague .org. T-Ball and “Minors” division registration is free, while older divisions carry a nominal cost. The season will open on Saturday, Aug. 22, and run through Halloween.

Chester County 4-H Fair Posted

The Chester County 4-H Fair will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, and from Monday to Saturday, Aug. 3 to 8, at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook.

County youths will display the projects they have prepared throughout the year. Projects may include arts and crafts, sewing, plant science,

engineering, robotics, photography, citizenship and leadership, foods and nutrition, and wildlife. The tabletop exhibits will open in the evening on Aug. 3 and remain on display through Aug. 8 at noon.

During numerous animal shows, youths will demonstrate their skill in the handling and

care of farm animals, including breeding sheep and market lambs, swine, beef, market goats, dairy goats, dairy cattle, and horses. A livestock sale of beef, sheep, goats, and swine will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. The fair will wrap up with the horse show on Aug. 8.

The park is a strong foundation to carry the organization into the future.

Denim Kurtzhals, mayor of Atglen, was one of the volunteers involved with the erection of the scoreboard. Kurtzhals is also the vice president of Octorara Area Little League and manages the organization’s “Junior” division team.

“I think it really helps (the kids) feel like the community supports them,” said Kurtzhals. “Baseball players are definitely appreciative of that.”

Gurel had quite an audience on many occasions.

Temple football plays at Lincoln Financial Field, home to the Philadelphia Eagles. Along with doing some of the Owls’ basketball games, she also performed with the Diamond Band in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2025 in New York City.

Her favorite memory from the trip was performing “Fly Eagles Fly” in Times Square.

“It was super exciting,” she said. “It was the beginning of my junior year, (and) we found out they’d been sending in applications and a bunch of stuff

behind the scenes. ... For so many people, that was their dream. People were crying when they told us.”

Being a feature twirler is a daunting task. Gurel was accompanied by an upperclassman twirler in her first two years at Temple but was on her own to practice and come up with her own routines in her final two years.

“That was definitely difficult, but there’s also opportunities to be creative and highlight what you’re good at,” she said. “I knew what I was good at, and I was able to highlight that in routines and shy away from what I wasn’t so strong in.”

Part of that adjustment was focusing on what appeals to a live audience

of fans rather than trained judges with twirling experience.

“It’s important to try and keep people entertained,” she said. “There’s a lot of little technical things that people who understand the sport could know is really cool. ... It’s really understanding what people want to see and what sounds good with the music and stuff like that.”

In the spring, Gurel graduated from Temple with a degree in risk management and insurance. She performed with a fellow business senior, Natalia Redzinik, in the Thanksgiving Day parade. Gurel now works as an underwriting associate at Philadelphia-based Reliance Matrix.

DeWese Named Chief Public Defender

Chester County has appointed Susanna DeWese as its new chief public defender. DeWese, who currently serves as first assistant public defender, will assume her new position on Aug. 5, when current Chief Public Defender Nathan Schenker retires.

DeWese has worked in the Public Defender’s Office for 23 years, the last six as first assistant

public defender. Her duties in her most recent role included helping to oversee daily operations, staff supervision, budgeting, grant administration, training, and strategic planning.

She is a graduate of Rosemont College and received her law degree from Villanova University School of Law. DeWese is a resident of the Borough of West Chester.

Other local twirlers have found success after growing through the Ab-Salute Twirling system. Pequea Valley alumna Emilie Thibeault competed at the Nations Cup and started a twirling club at Lebanon Valley College; she now coaches at Ab-Salute. Other local grads, like Kyleigh Jarvis of Pequea Valley and Alyssa Sprout of Lampeter-Strasburg, have gone on to twirl at schools like University of North Carolina - Charlotte and Penn State, respectively.

“Wendy seriously is just a sweetheart,” Gurel said. “It was so special; she’s amazing. I feel like they’ve really set me up to achieve all of my dreams.”
