Second Annual “Battle of the Boroughs” Underway

Three boroughs will compete for the trophy, but the real winner of the Battle of the Boroughs food drive will be the local community.

After the first Battle of the Boroughs food drive was a resounding success in 2025, Parkesburg, Atglen and Christiana are once again collaborating for a friendly competition to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC).

It began on June 24 and will run through Tuesday, Aug. 4, which doubles as National Night Out.

“It felt really good to see the community come together and have a lot of fun,” said April Brade of the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Committee.

Even after 90 years, the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) is as strong as ever.

The LCAA, the oldest art association in Lancaster County, celebrated its 90th birthday at its annual banquet at the DoubleTree Resort in Lancaster in May. The banquet’s keynote speaker was artist Richard Ressel, who shared many of his memories from over the years. He also honored Ken Hoak, an LCAA member since 1950, for his longtime service.

Anne Hendricks, outreach coordinator with All 4 Paws Rescue, a nonprofit, fosterbased, all-breed organization located in Malvern, is familiar with the most common excuse potential pet foster parents give. “They all say, ‘I could never foster because I would want to adopt them all,’” noted Hendricks, who has fostered more than 100 dogs over nine years. “We have all foster-failed at least once,” she added, referring to a foster dog she knew she would be keeping within the first 24 hours of fostering her.

According to Kisha Reinmiller, site director for Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center, many who foster do become adoptive pet parents. “We are always recruiting new fosters,” she shared. “A lot of them adopt for the first time.”

Both organizations reported that becoming a foster parent for an animal is not complicated. The Lancaster Center application can be found online at www.pspca .org, and the All 4 Paws application is at www.all4pawsrescue .com. Representatives of both organizations noted that the foster application is similar to the adoption application. “We process (the applications), and then we reach out,” said Reinmiller. Hendricks pointed out that for potential fosters who already have pets, contacting the applicant’s vet is a crucial step. “We talk to the vet to be sure (the applicant’s) pets have been well taken care of,” she stated.

A total of 5,654 pounds of food was collected last year for the OAFC. Parkesburg led the way with 2,141 pounds; Atglen and Christiana finished with 1,859 and 1,654 pounds, respectively.

“We love the fact that everybody got really into it,” Brade said. “I have friends in both other communities, so I would nudge them and text them on. Then they would post on Facebook, like, ‘Come on, don’t let them win.’”

New for this year’s drive, a traveling trophy has been created, featuring an individual standing on top of two cans. The trophy is living in Parkesburg Borough Hall until either Atglen or Christiana eventually wins the crown.

“My husband and I crafted this lovely tacky gold trophy made out of cans,” Brade said. “And then we have an action figure hero with their hands up.”

Both Brade and Grossman said that doing the drive over the summertime was a very intentional choice. With kids out of school for the summer and no longer receiving one or two free meals per day, local food pantries are forced to carry the brunt of the load.

“There’s just a big need for food over the summertime,” Grossman said. “A lot of people do drives at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, but there’s not a lot that happens throughout the summer.”

Once an applicant is approved, the organization will want to learn the type of animal the foster parent would like to take in. “A lot of folks have preferences, whether it’s a large or small dog, a cat, or kittens,” stated Reinmiller. Other questions may reference lifestyle and family size, such as whether the home is high traffic.

At All 4 Paws, foster coordinator Melissa Kuchinski will contact the approved applicant to discuss the age and size of a possible foster dog and to learn whether small children or cats are pres

ent in the home. “We try to place (animals that) we think would work in that home,” explained Hendricks. Special attention is given to place animals with medical issues with more experienced foster caregivers, since these animals usually remain in foster care longer than the typical stay, which can range from a day or two to several months.

Meeting the animal that will be fostered is treated much like an adoption meeting at the Lancaster Center. If the meeting goes well, the foster care provider will

receive crates, toys, food, and treats, and any necessary medical care will be covered.

“The fosters are not out-of-pocket for anything (at All 4 Paws),” explained Hendricks. “We give them the white glove treatment,” she added, noting that the organization depends on donations to make that possible. Fosters also receive a list of rules that include instructions such as keeping a leash on the dog at all times. “Rescue dogs are a huge flight risk,” noted Hendricks. “It’s easier and safer to grab a leash than

a dog.”

Training for dogs and foster parents can also be part of the mix. “We have training partners who work with us,” shared Hendricks, who recalled a dog she fostered who did not like to meet new people. “A training partner met with us for an hour and gave me hints, and (that dog is) now in a wonderful home,” she shared.

At the Lancaster Center, foster parents are given direct access to SPCA staff members even after hours. “We can counsel, provide handouts, or talk on the phone about what to do with certain behaviors,” explained Reinmiller, who reaches out to fosters weekly to see how things are going.

According to Reinmiller, foster parents are a great source of information about the pet and provide

photos and videos that help in the adoption process.

Today, the LCAA rosters 245 members who come from all over the area, not just Lancaster County. Within those members are professional artists who make a living off their craft, as well as amateurs who are just getting into art.

“It’s amazing the number of people we have from Marietta, up in Ephrata, down in Quarryville, even from Chester County,” Keller said. “It’s a place, probably one of the few places where nonprofessional artists can mingle with professional artists and have their work displayed and shown. ... It’s a real nice venue for them to be able to exhibit their work, and then it just encourages them to paint more and to do more things.”

The anniversary is also a time of change for the association. At the banquet, president Carol Dale stepped down from her position. She was the longest serving president in LCAA history, guiding it through a period of uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dale introduced new president Amelia Abrams at the banquet.

“She’s done a wonderful

job,” Keller said of Dale. “We’re very pleased that we have someone that’s very qualified to take over her place. It’s a big responsibility.”

Throughout the year, the LCAA offers classes in drawing, watercolor, pottery, jewelry making, sketching and pastels.

The classes, geared toward both children and adults, are offered at various times of the day and days of the week, leaving a window for everybody to participate.

The association’s members will have a “Decades” show at the Lancaster Art

Vault in July, located on the first floor at 100 N. Queen St., Lancaster. The show commemorates the organization’s history and anniversary.

On the homefront in Strasburg, the LCAA opened a “Summer Media Wars” show on June 28 that will progress every three weeks, with new artwork added. Attendees will vote to decide which media wins the challenge.

The show’s hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays; admission is free. For more

“I just wish (people) would come down and see our gallery, because we have a lot of beautiful artwork,” Keller said. “I find that today, we’re sort of starting to lose a little bit of appreciation for things that people have done themselves.”

4-H Posts Day Camps

Chester County 4-H, a program of the Penn State Extension, will hold two day camps. Both camps will take place at the Penn State Extension Chester County 4-H Office, located in the Government Services Center, 601 Westtown Road, Suite 370, West Chester.

A STEM day camp will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 28 and 29. The camp is designed for youths ages 11 to 16.

Participants will learn about vibe coding, an approach to software development that uses natural language prompts to create applications. No traditional coding experience is required. Youths will create crafting prompts to guide AI tools, make a simple website, and learn to design a user-friendly interface. There is a discount for those who are already 4-H members. to take strays,” explained Reinmiller, who noted that each dog is assessed at the center. “Foster homes are really helpful for us to get home knowledge for the dogs in our care … especially with dogs that are a little shy or have behavioral concerns or need medical care.”

Hendricks agreed, noting, “We can make a good match (for an adoptive home) using the information about the (pet provided by foster parents).”

Finding foster homes with volunteers who have had pets but do not have any at the moment is especially helpful because those foster parents have experience but are able to focus more on the animal being fostered.

accept cats as well. “For the most part (with) cats, it’s mostly kitten fostering,” said Reinmiller. “It’s socializing and housing until they are old enough to come to the shelter for adoption.” Kittens must be eight weeks old or weigh two pounds to stay at the shelter.

day. “We like the foster care system because it gives the (pet) a home as opposed to a kennel,” said Hendricks. “It’s about whether we have a foster home (available) that will work,” she added, pointing out that foster homes are always needed. Reflecting on her own experience fostering, Hendricks stated that she has reaped many benefits. “It’s wonderful to be part of a dog’s journey,” she said.
