It was a simple pun, but it was fitting.
When Octorara senior Val Wakeman took the stage at the school’s graduation ceremony on June 5, she opened her remarks with a fun play on her name.
“Good evening, fellow graduates
and distinguished guests, my name is Val Wakeman, and I’m honored to be here with you as the class Val-edictorian,” she said.
Standing by the Octorara Brave statue in front of Octorara Junior/ Senior High School, the district celebrated its 70th class of graduates on a very warm early summer evening.
Multiple speakers harkened back to experiences prior to the school year, giving perspective on what the year brought for this Octorara senior class.
“It all began last summer when we held our first annual student leadership summit,” said high school principal Jonathan Propper. “During that summit, I asked (students) a

In a year where countless towns and community organizations are readying for celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary, Atglen Borough will celebrate a milestone birthday of its own.
This year is Atglen’s 150th birthday, which will be honored by a massive five-day event that is scheduled to run from Wednesday, June 24, to Sunday, June 28.
“I noticed that we were coming up on an anniversary in the summer of (2024),” said Jennifer Grossman, chairperson of the borough’s park and recreation commission. “Then we kind of talked about how we should plan something ... there’s been conversations every meeting in 2025 about what we’re going to

For six decades, the Strasburg Senior Citizens has been an organization unlike most others.
The group is not the average Rotary, Kiwanis or Lions Club, although it shares many of the same charitable causes.
The group, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in May, is a special place for those age 50 and older to fraternize, enjoy activities and forge a unique connection to the area and to each other.
A member of the Graybill family has been a part of the group for most of its existence. Kay Graybill is the group’s only active third-generation member; her grandmother and mother were both also active members in the past.
“This is my third year in the club,” she said. “My mom, she worked part time; it was more a way to just get out. And my grandma, at that age, she would just get a place to go out and meet other people. It just feels right to be in a group that they were a part of.”
The group meets at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. There is a small door fee to pay for the rental of the fire hall. People from all around the county are members, although most are from Strasburg, Paradise, Quarryville, Ronks and the surrounding towns.

speakers that are of particular interest to seniors.
“All kinds of things to entertain,” described Graybill. “We also do some community service. We’ve been collecting food for the bank at the First Presbyterian Church; the last couple months we provided sleeping bags for the Tenfold homeless shelter program.”
Gonder, two men who were both referred to as “some of Strasburg’s most prominent citizens,” per old editions of the Strasburg Heritage Society’s magazine.
Outside of its monthly meetings, the group has restaurant meetups and theater outings around Lancaster County and takes bus trips beyond the immediate area.

The group has around 35 active members, Graybill said. At the group’s June meeting, they will formally celebrate their sixth decade of existence. Former members have been invited back to reminisce and share stories of the past.

“I think we are a little unique,” Graybill said. “For 60 years we’ve maintained this organization, which is really hard at any day and age. I belong to several other groups, and it’s like pulling teeth to get them to do things anymore. It’s been fun to have a group that is willing to do the work and have fun.”

do and having it come together. There’s been lots of planning involved.”
The event will kick off on Wednesday night with an invitation dinner hosted by The Barn at Stoneybrooke, 4740 Lower Valley Road, Atglen. The dinner will consist of sharing history and stories from more than a century of generations in the borough. After invitations are sent out, the event will become open to the public until the 100 to 125 person capacity is reached.
The borough is asking attendees at the dinner to bring a food donation, which will benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard and will go towards the upcoming “Battle of the Boroughs” food drive, set to be contested with nearby Parkesburg and Christiana.
“We’ll be collecting food for that in the entire weekend,” said Cristi Hahn, borough manager.
On Thursday, June 25, Atglen Public Library will host an informational event titled “But Nothing Ever Happened Here” at 7 p.m. at the library, 121 Main St. The night will detail how the borough participated in the American Revolution; the Christiana Riot; and agricultural, engineering and forensic history. simple question: ‘What can we do to make Octorara High School a better place?’ What followed was one of the most productive conversations I’ve had with students in my career. I remember leaving that room thinking that if these students were representative of the future, then our future is in very good hands.”
Likewise, district superintendent Shawn Dutkiewicz asked students to recall an event in the fall where kindergarten students from Octorara Primary Learning Center met with high school seniors at the football stadium.
At that event, Dutkiewicz asked the kindergartners what advice they would give to seniors when they graduate. Some focused on practical life skills, like remembering to pay your water bill, while others reminded seniors to spend time with their families before heading into their adult life.
“During that time, you could tell immediately that the (kindergartners) looked up to our seniors,” Dutkiewicz said. “To them, the senior class represented what it meant to grow up in Octorara.”
For graduate Lazo Christou, growing up in Octorara meant feeling the support of a tight-knit community.
“The connection between home and school has always been the foundation of both my comfort and my accountability,” he said. “In a bigger place, it’s easy to blend in and become just another face in the hallways. Here, at Octorara, that was never really an option. Our intimate community pushed us to support each other, to know each other and to grow with each other.”
Christou, an athlete, spoke of the school’s dedicated fanbase, student section and unique atmosphere. He also praised the district’s involvement in community service and how it has provided opportunities for students in nontraditional programs, such as the culinary arts program.
“Octorara wasn’t just the place where we went to school,” he said. “It was where we learned how to belong.”
Propper shared that 46 graduates finished with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of over 4.00. Molly French was named as salutatorian; she will be headed to Dickinson College to study environmental science. Wakeman is pledged to Saint Joseph’s University to major in physics.
“Remember that starry-eyed kid with a heart full of gold who dreamed to make the world a better place,” Wakeman said. “Because that kid is still you, and now you have the tools to make your dreams come true.”

Saturday, June 27, is scheduled to bring a community day, one that will consist of “a family fun day of events like a cornhole tournament, hay rides, a band and food trucks,” Grossman said.
Sunday’s packed slate will begin with a multi-denominational community church service at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church (PPC), which derives its name from the borough’s original name before being incorporated as Atglen. PPC predates Atglen Borough and recently celebrated its 175th anniversary.
A parade will follow in town, from the park at PPC to Atglen Community Park. While not a true parade with intricate floats and balloons, the borough is inviting members of the public to decorate

Sunday’s festivities will continue with a “popsicles in the park” event, an annual activity that is being incorporated into the 150th anniversary celebration. A closing ceremony will then close the day and the event at large.
“My hopes for the weekend would be to have a large community involvement,” said Grossman. “We chose specifically not to do it over the Fourth of July because of America’s 250; we feel like we didn’t want to compete with other towns that have more manpower and bigger budgets than what we have.”
The event has its own logo, designed by Octorara Area High School student Mary Flowers through the district’s Career and Technical Education Center graphic design program.
“I happily accepted, eager to
work on a digital project for the town I live so close to,” Flowers said of the project. “This design, in particular, pulled together physical buildings as well as the outline of Atglen Borough to frame the work. I sought to include nature through the trees and flowers to highlight the parks, such as Wolf’s Hollow, and illustrate how in Atglen County, nature and the town live harmoniously.”
Hot Weather Safety Program Set
LCH Health and Community Services will join with the Jennersville YMCA and Chester County Health Department to offer “Hot Days, Safe Ways,” a community conversation on summer heat safety.
Hosted by United Way Southern Chester County, the event will take place on Wednesday, June 17, at 6 p.m. in the pavilion at the Jennersville YMCA, 880 W. Baltimore Pike, West Grove.
During the family-friendly, all-ages event, panelists will discuss common risks and dangers associated with high summer temperatures in southern Chester County. Program attendees will hear
from Casey Cummings, assistant program manager for the Chester County Health Department’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response program; Katie Doochack, director of risk management for YMCA of Greater Brandywine; Dr. Joseph A. Greco, chief medical officer at LCH Health and Community Services; and nurse practitioner Melinda Olivencia-Lozada with LCH Health and Community Services. The topics to be discussed include heat-related illness prevention, staying hydrated, sun protection, and warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
