Cruisin’ in Christiana Car Show To Benefit Christiana Fire Company BY FRANCINE FULTON

Cruisin’ in Christiana, a car show that will feature vehicles of all makes and models, will be presented by the Christiana Fire Company on Saturday, June 14, on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the show will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year marks the third annual Cruisin’ in Christiana. The first event was held in the fall of 2023, but organizers decided to change the car show to spring to take advantage of more favorable weather conditions. “Last year, we had almost 90 cars,” said fire company member and event organizer Shawnie Betts. “We had cars, trucks and motorcycles.” See Car Show pg 6

A Day of Service

Octorara Student Council Volunteers in the Community

“W

e wanted to show the kids the enjoyment of helping the community and to build up school spirit,” said Adam Udell, co-adviser of the Octorara Junior-High School Student Council, whose members took part in a Day of Service on May 23. On that day, students completed yard work and painting at the Atglen Borough building and volunteered at the William J. Brinton House in Christiana, which is currently undergoing renovation by the Christiana Historical Society.

“We also used it as a recruiting tool and asked (other students) to join our Day of Service,” Udell added. “We had five or six kids come with us and try it out and get to see what Student Council is like.” The Student Council program was recently reinvigorated by Udell, along with co-adviser Jen Watson. “Jen and I took over Student Council last year and found that student participation had been on the decline, (which began) during the pandemic,” Udell said. “We have both been here awhile and have ties to the school. Jen went to Octorara

and is a longtime resident.” The project in Atglen was approved by Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich, who also teaches at Octorara, while the work at the Brinton House was approved by members of the historical society. “Students arranged their own transportation, or parents dropped them off; one student lived close enough to walk,” Udell noted. “We had this planned six or eight weeks in advance.” Students were told the historical significance of the Brinton House, which is associated with the Christiana Resistance of 1851. Fundraiser To Support Youth Group Mission Trip BY FRANCINE FULTON

In order to raise funds for its mission trip to Alaska this summer, members of the youth group at Pequea Baptist Church will present a fundraiser on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, which will feature a yard sale, a sale of baked goods and a car wash. The youth group, called SCOPE (Serving Christ on Planet Earth), has dubbed the activity “A Super-Colossal Fundraising Event.”

According to youth group leader Tammy Shondelmyer, the youth group held a bake sale and car wash last year to fund its previous mission trip, but this year a yard sale has been added. “We have people who donated antiques and furniture items. We have an antique rocking horse,” she stated. “Many items will be tagged. A lot of the smaller items will be by donation only.” Other items for sale will be household goods and children’s items, including baby playards.
