Little Hands Big Plans Sets Motorcycle Ride, Kids Day BY FRANCINE FULTON
Although it will have a different look this year because of the pandemic, Little Hands Big Plans’ 13th annual motorcycle ride to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation will take place on Sunday, April 25, at
the Southern End Community Association’s park, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. Registration will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and the ride will begin at 1 p.m. Following the ride, Kids Day will take place in the park from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. See Motorcycle Ride pg 8

Partnership Gives Away Hundreds Of Coats lthough the coat giveaway for area men, women, and children held at The Factory was not announced far in advance, cars were lined up two abreast in the Together Community Center parking lot a halfhour before the event started on Feb. 13. Some waiting in line were also there for the Fresh Express grocery giveaway, held monthly at The Factory, but a number had come to protect themselves or their children from the cold with a new coat. The coats, which were given away until 2 p.m., were provided through a partnership between The Factory and the Blessings Store, a clothing bank ministry of Limeville United Methodist Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. The store is a project of Limeville pastor Jim Brashear and Jeff Markle, who travels from the Allentown area to oversee the clothing bank that was started at the church in late 2020. “ We have partnered with the school districts,” said Markle, who
“We are hoping we will be able to help families in need.” “It was his vision 15 years ago to open a store in downtown Allentown for homeless and those in need,” said Markle. When Markle retired, he took over the Allentown store, partnering with the Burlington Coat Factory in the area to hold a coat drive each October and November. “I would give out 500 coats in the Lehigh Valley between November and January (annually),” said Markle, who noted Burlington customers could bring a clean coat in good condition to donate to receive a discount from
the store. Customers could also purchase a coat to donate. Markle said about 20% of the collected coats are gently used, and the rest are purchased new. The 250 coats collected to be given away at The Factory were donated at the Trexlertown Burlington Coat Factory store between Thanksgiving of 2020 and Jan. 9, 2021. Markle said that he is at the Blessings Store at the Limeville Church on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. “If people can’t make it at that time, we can make arrangements,” Markle said, adding, “We follow all the social distancing guidelines and (require) masks.” Only one family is served in the store at a time. “ We are hoping we will be able to help families in need,” said Markle. In addition to clothing, the store offers a limited selection of free hygiene items for adults, teens, children, and infants. The Chester County Planning Commission recently released a spring calendar of events that will include virtual programs that are free and open to the community via Zoom. Last summer, Girl Scout Shelby Kreger created the Parkesburg Community Garden as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. The garden, located in North Park in the borough, yielded a harvest of tomatoes, green beans, herbs, cucumbers and more. Now that Shelby is in school at Alvernia University, where she is majoring in biology, she hopes that others in the community will take over running the garden while she is away. “The garden has not been taken over yet,” said Shelby. “Since I’m at college, it’s hard for me to meet with people
down at the garden and help, but my mom (Michelle Kreger) is willing to help and talk to locals while I’m away.” Community members are needed to start seedlings to get ready for the growing season, or they can grow their own plants in the raised beds. Volunteers are also needed to help tend the gardens throughout the spring, summer and fall by watering, weeding and harvesting the produce. “I have a bunch of seeds that were donated when I started my project that I can still use, but I need help or volunteers to help me start the seedlings,” said Shelby. In July 2020, Shelby created a “Parkesburg Community Garden” Facebook page where she posted updates about the plants, and local residents could share information about the garden as well. The page also contains recipes and photos of how the harvested vegetables were prepared. Throughout the summer, Shelby and her fellow troop members watered and weeded the garden. In September, during a weekend home from college, Shelby was able to visit the garden and harvest vegetables, including cherry tomatoes and green beans. Shelby emphasized that the produce grown in the garden is meant for anyone. “Anyone can go pick and take what they want,” she stated. “Last year everything was harvested by locals.” Shelby is a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School and the Technical College High School - Brandywine Campus. “I am a lifetime member of Girl Scouts, so I still help and am a part of Girl Scouts,” she added.

Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education, helps a client with orientation and mobility using a dog guide. Ament explained. “Low-vision occupational therapy is for those who may have trouble with daily living - reading, writing and lighting issues. Anything they do on a daily basis that may be difficult, we help with a solution.” A program of action is tailored to each client and services are provided free of charge through grants and community donations. “Each person gets an individualized assessment and together we create a plan based on their needs and the goals they want to accomplish,” noted Ament. Because of the pandemic, VisionCorps did close for a time in March of 2020, but it pivoted to a hybrid model, which combines virtual and in-person programming. “Some of what we are doing is critical,” Ament stated. “You can’t teach someone how to cross a street over a computer. We made sure that we had a protocol and
safety procedures in place with the mindset that our clients and our employee safety was paramount. We were able to continue to provide services in person where needed.” He said that the biggest change since the pandemic has been transitioning the support groups from in-person meetings to virtual. “We were able to add more groups because of (the virtual platform) across all five counties,” Ament stated. “Last month, we had 20 different support groups that operate virtually.” “We are social people and for a lot of our client base, isolation is a huge concern,” he added. “Through our training and education and support groups, we are trying to lessen that isolation.” For more information about VisionCorps in Chester County, call 610-738-3008 or visit www.visioncorps.net/chester -county.

The organization also serves Adams, Lebanon and York counties. “We were asked by the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind to provide some services in Chester County,” Ament explained. “We started with vision screenings and now we provide our full complement of services.” VisionCorps provides instruction to those with visual impairments on how to manage the challenges of everyday life. It also offers sight loss support groups and free vision screenings for children ages 2 to 6, and it partners with the Pennsylvania Vision Foundation to provide vouchers for free eye exams and basic eyeglasses for people who qualify financially. VisionCorps also offers virtual programs to organizations and employers about its services. “We provide mobility instruction, which is basically teaching those with low vision how to travel safety and with confidence in their community,”

In 2020, participants took part in a local covered bridge ride as part of the Little Hands Big Plans motorcycle ride to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Marsha’s father, will lead the annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy because he raised the most money for the foundation in 2019. Featured in the convoy will be the Make-A-Wish Angel trailer. The trailer is enclosed, and its sides are covered with stars and the names of MakeA-Wish children who have died. One of the names is Marsha’s daughter, Harley. “My daughter, Harley, was a Make-A-Wish child, but she passed away before she got her wish,” explained Marsha. “The (first) year my dad got first place, he asked to pull the trailer (so that) Harley would be able to be part of the convoy (in spirit). Now, every year the first truck has the opportunity to pull that trailer.” The Little Hands Big Plans charity was formed by the Wagner family, which has adopted children with special needs and serious medical conditions. Marsha also lost another adopted daughter, Elaina. “We raise money for kids, and we have big plans,” Marsha said, explaining the name of the charity. “ We didn’t want to call it ‘the Wagners.’ We wanted something more.” For more information about the motorcycle ride and Kids Day, readers may call Marsha at 717-989-3998 or search for “Little Hands Big Plans” on Facebook. This year, as was the case in 2020, the motorcycle ride will not travel to Delaware because of visitation and capacity restrictions at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings.
