Church to Create Mural in Honor of 175th Anniversary

Ablank wall on the north side of the education building at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church (PPC) in Atglen will be transformed into a mural, one of the special activities that will celebrate the church’s 175th anniversary this May. The mural will be painted by the congregation members, and the public is welcome to participate.

The 14-by-26-foot mural, which will be located along Ridge Avenue, has been designed by anniversary committee members. Helping to assist in the placement of the mural will be artists Michael Miller and Steve Wilson.

“Our committee has worked on the layout of it, and we have two artists, Steve Wilson, a former member who grew up in the church and is well-known in the Lancaster art world, and Michael Miller, who grew up in Gap and now lives in Reading,” explained congregation and committee member Lisa Rudisill. She noted that both artists are skilled in the creation of community murals.

The mural will not be painted directly onto the wall. Rather, 3-by-5-foot panels will be painted, and

When Carole Lowry of Gap recently captured a little dog named Fancy, who had run off from her Elverson home during the January blizzard, it was not the first time she helped reunite a dog with its owner. In fact, Lowry volunteers her tracking services for lost pets she learns about through a network of friends or on social media.

“If I see a (notice about a lost) dog on Facebook and it doesn’t seem like anybody is giving (the owners) any help, I will reach out and help them,” she stated.

She recalls the story of a German shepherd

that ran away in Phoenixville and made its way to Morgantown. In this case, she was able to help the dog’s owners over the phone. “The dog started out in Phoenixville off Route 29, and people were calling it and chasing it. It was (later) spotted in Morgantown running on I-76,” said Lowry. “We got a report that she was on the turnpike headed west. I kept warning (the owners) to remember if you see her, do not call out to her. Sit and be calm with good-smelling food.”

The owners were able to corral the dog in one area and eventually caught her. “The owner said, ‘I never thought my dog would run from me,’ but you have to let them process. She was

SERMON SERIES

Grace Community Church 53 Hurley Road, Parkesburg, PA 19365

Many people get excited about sermons that show how the Lord’s prophecies have been fulfilled. But do you know that there is typology in the Old Testament that Jesus also fulfilled?

• Why was the tabernacle constructed the way it was?

• What was the significance of the feast days?

• Why did they have those different kinds of sacrifices?

All of these picture Jesus Christ and point to Him. We would like to invite you to hear our sermon series. We are doing a sermon series on the tabernacle, how it was constructed, the feast days, the various sacrifices and how they all point to Jesus Christ. Most importantly we will see how they are significant to us today. Sunday morning service starts at 10:40 AM.

Wagontown Chapel to Host Sportsman’s Event

Wagontown Chapel will present its 20th annual Sportsman’s Event on Saturday, March 21, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The event will feature a display of vendors; snacks; and a talk on hunting by Nate Hosie from HeadHunters TV, who is also a country music singer. Attendees will also have an opportunity to win prizes.

Guests will be able to view displays by a variety of vendors from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. “We will have 15 to 20 vendors this year,” said pastor Tim Crans, a resident of Atglen. “There will be hunting-related vendors, taxidermists, fishing vendors and hunting call vendors. The church will have a table that will have information about our church and our other ministries like archery camps

for kids and 3D shoots for adults.”

Pheasants Forever, a nonprofit conservation organization, will set up a display, while another vendor will offer framed works of art made with painted turkey feathers. “She paints a deer, a turkey or a bear on the feathers,” said Crans. “One of them will be a door prize.”

While lunch will not be served, an assortment of snacks will be available to enjoy. Among the snacks will be cookies and brownies, as well as chips donated by Herr’s.

Hosie’s presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Hosie is from Montdale, where he learned to hunt from his father and grandfather who both began taking him out to hunt at the age of 6. His love for hunting grew through the years, and he became known as

a skilled turkey and big game hunter. Currently, he co-hosts HeadHunters TV, which airs on the Outdoor Channel, alongside Randy Birdsong.

In addition, Hosie is a country music singer, playing at county fairs, outdoor shows, private events and clubs across the country. He has opened for and shared the stage with well-known country singers Rhett Akins, Riley Green, Luke Bryan, Travis Tritt, Ted Nugent and others. His songs include “The America I Know,” “The Woods” and “Rocked All Summer Long.”

In his provided biography Hosie stated, “Sometimes I just sit back and think about how blessed I am to hunt for a living, have the opportunity to make music and have a platform to do my best to bring good to this world.”

SPRUCE UP

This will be Hosie’s first appearance at Wagontown Chapel. “We happened to get a guy who hunts and also sings,” said Crans, adding that Hosie plans to sing a few numbers following his talk on hunting.

Door prizes, some of which have been donated by local businesses, will be awarded after the talk. There will be separate prizes for adults and youths.

“We have close to $15,000 in door prizes that we are giving out,” Crans said, noting that door prizes will include, bows, crossbows, calls, cameras, binoculars and gun certificates.

Attendees who bring three nonperishable food items will be entered into a separate drawing to win a muzzleloader. The items should be commercially produced products, such as canned meat and soups. No home-preserved items will

be accepted. The food will be donated to the church’s food pantry.

Crans, who is an avid hunter himself, noted that many people look forward to the gathering each year. “It’s an opportunity for us to reach out to the community,” he stated, adding that while the event is predominantly attended by men, organizers also encourage children, youths and women to attend. “This is not a fundraiser for the church. It is an opportunity to share Jesus Christ with people who may not typically come into church.”

Wagontown Chapel is located at 469 W. Kings Highway, Wagontown. Tickets are only available

at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “20th Annual Wagontown Chapel Sportsman’s Event 2026.”

A link to order tickets can be found at www.face book.com/Wagontown ChapelSportsmansEvent. The Facebook page also includes photos of the door prizes and additional information.

All tickets will be sold online. However, if the event is not sold out, tickets may be available at the door. It is suggested that people call the church at 610-384-2838 in advance to check for ticket availability at the door.

in flight mode,” said Lowry. Lowry helped locate another dog in Sadsburyville. “(The dog’s owner) paid a drone person to come out and could not find the dog. I set up a trail cam and food station, and the dog came out a few hours later,” she said. “The owner got there with her other dogs. I told her to walk and talk like she normally would, and (eventually) he heard her voice and ran and jumped on her.”

In addition to locating lost dogs and reuniting them with their owners, Lowry captures dogs that have been abandoned and seeks to find them loving homes.

In fact, Lowry’s own dog Ermina, a German shepherd, was a dog that she rescued. “My first dog I ever trapped was in September of 2024, so I haven’t been doing it that long,” she noted. “I trapped a dog - a shepherd - that started out on Welsh Mountain outside Narvon. Someone got her and put her in their garage. I saw the Facebook picture,

and there was something about her eyes.”

Unfortunately, the dog escaped from the garage, and she disappeared for a month. Lowry continued to follow Facebook posts and saw that the dog had been spotted in West Caln Township. “My brother was a West Caln police officer, and he knew I was following the dog, and it was right outside Parkesburg. I borrowed a trap from the SPCA, and I kept it very quiet. I got her within an hour and a half. She lives happily with me now,” said Lowry. She noted the lady who originally found the dog and kept it in her garage has been by to visit Ermina on several occasions.

Lowry said finding Ermina has been an inspiration to help other dogs. “She was obviously dumped and no one was helping her and it broke my heart,” she shared. “(For) almost three months she just lived wandering around.”

Lowry also helped find an abandoned dog from

Lionville that would eventually show up in Valley Township, Coatesville. “It was a pit bull mix. I spent about 10 days figuring out the dog’s patterns. I set a trap and got her,” she said. “I kept her here in my garage, and my cousin came and adopted her on Christmas day.”

She said that she is particularly interested in finding dogs when others may have given up. “There are certain ones that catch my eye. There is a little dog in Landenberg that I am working on (finding) right now,” she said, noting that chasing a lost dog is not the way to catch it. “It’s got to be on their terms. I also always pray to God to keep dog safe as well as myself when working on a case.”

When a dog is finally captured, Lowry said that as a lover of animals, it fills her heart. “When I hear the trap go off and get that leash on them, I get very emotional,” she added. “It is a very good feeling knowing that I was able to help.

Message from the speaker: “I’ve been privileged to be part of the same body of belivers for the last 50 years. Growing with the same people for so long, it seems we focus on purging the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes. But do we purge the third thing - the pride of life - with the same vigor? 2000 years ago Jesus took 12 very prideful men and chipped away at them for 3 years.”

the artists will affix the panels to the blank wall to create the finished project.

“They will take the drawing that the committee has designed and worked on, and they will transfer it to big canvas pieces, and we are going to paint them,” explained Rudisill. “We’re painting on polyester interfacing (using) acrylic paint.”

A community art painting day will take place on Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The artists will be on hand to provide assistance and complete touch-up work. Additional painting, if necessary, will continue on Saturday, April 18.

People of all ages, including children, are welcome to paint, but youngsters must be accompanied by an adult.

“We can take 16 people at a time to paint for a max of an hour. It will be paint by number,” said Rudisill, noting no previous painting experience is necessary.

The mural will feature symbols against a burgundy background to match the church’s décor, along with outstretched hands that represent various ages and ethnicities.

“We want as many people to touch this (mural) and be a part of it as possible. At Penningtonville, we have our own congregation, but (the mural is) representing this whole community, which is why there are old, young and different nationalities that are all part of it,” said Rudisill. “Every kind of person has been inside of our church. This is a visual representation of (our community). We want anyone and everyone to help.”

The cross in the center of the mural, which represents the church steeple, was designed by congregation member Dan Miller.

“He is a 97-year-old art professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,” Rudisill noted. “It’s a wood cut; that is his specialty. He takes a piece of wood and carves it out (and creates the item) in reverse, like a printing press.”

After the 3-by-5-foot panels have been painted, they will be attached to the wall like puzzle pieces until the mural is formed.

“(The artists) will affix it to

the wall with some kind of glue, and they will cover it with a protective coating,” said Rudisill. “We will be finishing the painting in April, and it will be put in place by May.”

PPC’s 175th anniversary celebration will be held on Sunday, May 17. “The mural dedication will be a big part of our anniversary celebration,” said congregation member and committee member Pat Softchin. “We will have a big worship service that day. We invited past ministers, friends and family members of the congregation and dignitaries. One of our former ministers, Jason Link, will be

out guest minister.” The event will be followed by a church picnic.

Penningtonville Presbyterian Church is located at 406 Main St., Atglen. Those who would like to take part in the painting are asked to call the church in advance at 610-593-2173 to reserve a one-hour painting slot.
