FFA Students Give an Old Tractor

New Life as “Spirit of ’76” Replica

Atractor without a running motor and covered in rust was transformed into a replica of a “Spirit of ’76” patriotic bicentennial-edition tractor by FFA members from Octorara Junior Senior-High School. The students won two awards for their efforts as part of a restoration competition held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January.

Students who restored the tractor under the guidance of FFA adviser Ryan King were Gabe Kreider, Hector Vergara, Lisandro Esquivel-Lopez, Grant Umble, Scott Danby and Jackson Ranck. The young men are members of the school’s Mechanical Systems Technology program.

King explained that Lisandro found the 1973 Case 446 tractor on sale on Facebook Marketplace. “We were searching for this particular model,” King explained. “In 1976, there were four tractor companies

Author Releases Children’s Book to Honor Late Grandmother

Kimberly Mowery of Intercourse, an author of biblically based children’s books, recently released her third book, “Finding the Leader.”

The latest story is part of “The Pilgrimage of Jacki and Gerri” series, which is designed to honor Mowery’s grandmother by retelling her personal history.

Each book in the series tells the story of Jacqueline Ann and Geraldine Doris, twin sisters that Mowery’s grandmother, Sarah June, lost in 1940. After the girls’ death, they were never spoken about again.

“I didn’t know my grandmother had twins until I was 14 years old,” said Mowery, who grew up in Parkesburg and attended Octorara schools.

After Mowery and her husband, Dennis, had three sons, they, too, lost their daughter, who was named Sarah June, in 2005 at the age of 16 months.

In 2014, Mowery set out to stillborn, and Geraldine lived 48 hours.

Coincidentally, Sarah June Mowery died from a cancerous brain tumor on Jan. 24, close to the birthdate of the twins.

www.maplegrovepreschool.com • maplegrovepreschool@gmail.com

This led to Mowery’s decision to write stories based on her grandmother’s lost children. “After I lost my daughter, who was named after my grandmother, I realized what it was like to lose a child,” Mowery recalled, “My original thought was to allow my grandmother to grieve (through the stories), so to speak. I could bring her back and rewrite her story and talk about her kids and not cover it up.”

In what she calls a “divine download,” Mowery wrote a total of five books in the “The Pilgrimage of Jacki and Gerri” series, including the current title as well as

“The Crownless King” and “Billy’s Eagle on a Rainbow Backpack.” The remaining books will be published as the illustrations are completed by local artist Anna Kelsey. “God downloaded five books in five weeks in 2018,” Mowery shared. The stories in the series bring the twins back to life in heaven. In the latest book, Jacki and Gerri meet up with Michael, who is waiting for his friend Greg to arrive. “The stories are not about death or dying,” noted Mowery. “It’s about their adventures in heaven.”

In addition to honoring her grandmother, the goal of the books is to introduce children to Jesus Christ and the Bible, including its many traditional stories such as those that revolve around

Moses, Noah, creation and Christmas. “For kids to connect personally with Jesus is the goal of every Bible story,” said Mowery. “Jesus is explaining (the stories) more on a personal level and what they mean to them.”

Additionally, Mowery feels these books honor her grandmother in another way well. “My grandmother always wanted to be a writer, but it was not a time for aspiring women authors,” Mowery said. “This is her, but the next generation. It’s her story; these are her kids.”

In the introduction of the new book, Mowery writes, “I know (my grandmother’s)

healed heart is totally in the midst of this project. I couldn’t be more amazed at how God can take the tragic deaths of three little baby girls generations apart and turn it into a blessing for many. Now, when you read this book you can appreciate the girls even more.”

Mowery said that after the Jacki and Gerri series is completed, she has thoughts in mind about additional books, including one to honor her late husband, who passed away in 2021. For more information about Mowery and the books, visit www.author kimberlymowery.com.

Throughout college, I worked part time at a grocery store to help with expenses - my first real job. I was only there for a little over four years, but it left me with a lifetime of memories and lifelong friendships.

We worked hard at the supermarket, but because we were people in our teens and early 20s, we also liked to have fun. We had parties in the back room during the holiday season, complete with music and dancing. We also played fun games like turkey bowling, which involved stacks of canned goods and rolling frozen turkeys. One of our co-workers named Tommy would eat anything on a dare. I saw him eat an entire apple pie for $10.

Much of the activity took place in our breakroom where we could enjoy lots of free coffee as well as “damaged” baked goods like doughnuts and cookies with compromised packaging. There were also plenty of bags of candy that got sliced open by a box cutter. Truthfully, some of those goodies were not damaged “accidentally.”

We also had nicknames for many of our repeat customers. A lady we called Speed Shopper spent at least an hour in the aisles carefully checking each product she bought for expiration dates.

Another woman, whom we named Golden Slippers, regularly visited the store with her many children, whom she tried to control without much success. One time, one of them broke free and streaked down the dog food aisle wearing only a diaper. Despite the children, she was always smartly dressed and styled. One of my co-workers said that she looked like a Disney princess complete with golden slippers, which is where the name came from.

Another mysterious gentleman came in every Friday night and purchased

two cans of tuna fish and a container of parsley. We never could figure out why or what he needed those products for. Maybe a treat for his cats?

And then there was Cash Man, who could not resist displaying his wallet and his supply of large bills. We don’t know what he did for a living and where he earned so much money. Back then, people paid with check or cash, and we actually had to learn the lost art of counting change. We also had to count manufacturers’ coupons by hand. If fact, when I first started, the there were no scanners. We had to manually punch in prices.

Many friendships and relationships formed through the years. One couple that met at the grocery store is still married today. They had a mixed relationship - she worked in the deli, and he worked as a butcher in the meat room.

Many of us went on to careers after our stint at the grocery store, which was really just a steppingstone. I, of course, became a writer. One co-worker joined the Air Force, while my best friend, whom I met there, now works as a technician in the operating room at a local hospital. Out of that store came a

pharmaceutical executive, a lineman, a carpenter and a business owner, among other professions. But although we have our own careers, we never forgot where we got our start - where we learned the importance of working hard and teamwork.

Under the guidance of our manager, we also developed pride in our work and pride in our store. We kept the store as clean as possible, and we rotated products to assure freshness. The young men in the store even had to wear ties.

Believe it or not, my grocery store friends and I still meet for Saturday lunch once a month, which is something we have been doing for years. During our lunches, we reminisce about those days and also talk about our current lives. We often wonder what happened to the tuna fish man, to Speed Shopper and to Golden Slippers now that her children are all grown. And does Cash Man now use alternate methods of paying for his groceries?

The lunches are great fun. Our manager still attends, and so does Tommy. And although he no longer eats great quantities of food for money, he still has an affinity for apple pie.

SINGING SPRING FOODS

that made special paint editions of the tractor. Steiger Tractor made these tractors for the bicentennial, but this was too big of tractor for us, so as we were doing research, (we learned) that Case made a 446 that had this paint scheme. We had to find this particular model.”

King transported the tractor via trailer from New York after paying the $200 asking price. “It was in bad shape,” said Scott.

Students worked together to assess the tractor’s condition and then planned the restoration process, assigning roles based on each member’s strengths.

“The first thing we did was look at the condition of the tractor overall. We had to figure what our goals were and what was needed,” said Lisandro. “Our first day was tearing apart the tractor and checking details. We divided and started conquering what we had to do. There were two groups. Me, Gabe and Hector worked on the engine. Jackson, Scott and Grant worked on the body panels.”

“When we first brought it in, the levers were ceased up, and it was missing

parts. Gabe found a parts tractor that was cheaper than buying parts (online),”

King noted. “Jackson was doing some research and got in contact with a dealership that specializes in these old Case tractors from out in Wisconsin. In talking with them, we got some parts from there as well. It is really difficult to find parts for this vintage of tractor.”

Following the mechanical work, the tractor was painted red, white and blue with stars and stripes.

“For the painting, we looked at a bunch of pictures of the original one,” said Jackson. “We painted it all white first, and then we (used) stencils for the blue and red and the white stars. We put clear coat on top to make it shine.”

“We put some pearl flakes in there so you can see it glitter in the light,” added Scott.

After restoring the tractor, the students entered it into the competition. “The theme of the Farm Show was the 250th anniversary of the country; that’s why we tried to find a stars and stripes tractor,” said King. “There are six individual prizes that you could win.

We won two of them. The team had to present a 15-minute presentation about the tractor, and the team won best presentation. We also won most improved tractor.”

He noted that this year is the first time that Lisandro and Gabe, who are both seniors, placed at the tractor restoration competition. “This is their third year doing this, and this year they were intent on getting a prize,” he said.

“This is what me and Gabe have been chasing for a while,” said Lisandro.

The tractor is now in full running order and is on display in the main hallway at the school. “Jackson wants to run it in the Solanco Parade. Outback Toys in Lititz wants us to bring it up to display it the spring when the Ertl Company is releasing a model of this tractor,” King noted.

The tractor is also scheduled to be on display

during Parkesburg 250th anniversary events and other semiquincentennial parades, re-creating the way the tractor was originally featured. “Case only made eight of (the tractors) for a parade in Racine, Wis. They made eight floats with these tractors pulling them,” King noted. “(The students) want to re-create a float to pull it.”

“This is not one of the original eight; it is a replica. They have only found six of them. There are two out there and no one knows where,” King added. “It was fun doing research on the tractor and get it running. It came out great.”

to Present “Into the Woods” as Its Spring Musical

The community is invited to enjoy a performance of “Into the Woods,” which will be presented in the school auditorium at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, on Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m.; Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, March 7, at 2 and 7 p.m.

“Into the Woods” brings main characters from “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Rapunzel,” and other tales by the Brothers Grimm together in a story about a baker and his wife, who wish to start a family. About 50 students have been cast in the play, under the leadership of K.C. Testerman, musical director; Octorara music teacher Joe Lynch, who was the high school musical director for 20 years from 2001 to 2022, assistant director; and Octorara teacher Nicole Norton, choreographer. Octorara Junior-Senior High School is located at 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Tickets for the show will be available at the door. To order tickets in advance, visit https://events.home townticketing.com and search for “Octorara Area JSHS.”
