The Parkesburg POINT Welcomes Back Students BY FRANCINE FULTON
he Parkesburg POINT youth center, 700 Main St., Parkesburg, reopened for in-person programming on Jan. 4. The POINT is currently open on Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 6:30 p.m. On Mondays and Wednesdays the facility is open to students in grades seven to 12. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for students in grades three through six. While it is not necessary for students to preregister before they visit, their parents will be asked to complete a registration form for them at the front desk. Youths may also register though The POINT app, which is free for downloading. Youths who visit The POINT can enjoy dinner, homework help, Bible study and recreational activities. “The POINT provides a safe haven for students to have social interaction and activity after a really tough year of not having either of those things,” said Debbie Shupp, development director. “ We provide activity, the arts, interactive games, Bible studies and a chance to rebuild relationships with peers and communicate with caring adults.”
“We are very grateful to those who have supported us through the pandemic, including over 25 churches who serve a nutritious meal each evening, and the other volunteers to help work with the kids,” Shupp added. “ We provide a fresh, homemade meal each evening. Dinner is prepared on-site, and the volunteers are responsible for planning the menu, cooking and serving,” Shupp explained. “As (executive director) Dwayne (Walton) puts it, the meal is the same meal you would serve your family, so it does include a protein, vegetable, starch and some sort of dessert.”
Since COVID-19, The POINT has adapted its programs and activities to help ensure the safety of staff members, volunteers and students. For example, The POINT added 10 part-time interns so that volunteers could work with students in smaller groups with social distancing in place. In addition, The POINT has been able to increase counseling services for students and continue to provide crisis support to families in need with food, utility and rental assistance and more. “We are very grateful to those who have supported us through the pandemic, including over 25 churches who serve a nutritious meal each evening, and the other volunteers to help work with the kids,” Shupp added. “We do adhere to all of the COVID-19 and CDC protocols in order to keep our students and volunteers safe and our doors open.” Now in its 18th year, The Parkesburg POINT is a faith-based community center that serves youths ages 8 to 18 in the Octorara and Coatesville Area school districts. VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, an initiative of Life Transforming Ministries (LTM), is offering free tax preparation by volunteers certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The service is available now through Thursday, April 15.

Select residents of Atglen Borough were able to begin the new year with fewer bills to pay thanks to Penningtonville Presbyterian Church. Congregation members collected $5,700 - enough funds to pay the bills of borough residents who
were behind on their sewer and water payments. “Penningtonville Presbyterian Church has been deeply rooted in this community since 1851. We love Jesus and we love our community,” stated pastor Eric Dorville. “God has blessed each one of us so that we can be a blessing to others. (2020 was) a hard year for so many people, and members of the leadership team thought a good way to demonstrate the love of Jesus was by loving our neighbors.” Dorville explained that the church contacted the borough in November of 2020 to see what amount would be needed to pay the bills, noting that updated amounts were provided as the year came to an end. He emphasized that the church donated the money, but the names of those whom it helped remained anonymous.

sign once (their tax return) is prepared.” Laird noted that VITA was informed by the IRS that the agency will not accept any e-files until Friday, Feb. 12. “This is quite a significant change from prior years and means the IRS will not even begin processing refunds until sometime after Feb. 12,” said Laird. “ We will take drop-offs, begin the preparation, and will do the final review as close to Feb. 12 as we can.” VITA is geared toward lowand moderate-income families, but anyone may have their taxes prepared for free. VITA volunteers ensure that families are educated on frequently missed credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. These credits and deductions may reduce a taxpayer’s liabilities and increase his or her refund. “Most of our people come to us and walk out with thousands of dollars in refunds.

The Atglen Public Library (APL) recently earned its second Silver Level Award with the PA Forward Star Library program administered by the Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA). The second award is for civic and social literacy. According to Robbyn Kehoe, APL library director, the library completed the requirements for the award by holding a local history family scavenger hunt last November. “The scavenger hunt presented participants with several clues to locate buildings that were standing when Atglen was incorporated in 1876. During the hunt, 81 participants got a good walk, learned a little local history and looked at their town in a new way,” Kehoe stated. “The event was so successful that we are planning more scavenger hunts for this year. It’s a great way to engage our community in a safe way while our buildings have limited admittance.” PA Forward, which launched statewide in 2012, works through five key literacies basic, information, civic and
social, health and financial. PaLA kicked off the Star Library program statewide in January 2017. “The Star Library recognition offers support to libraries who participate and integrate PA Forward’s literacies in their programming activities,” said Kehoe. Kehoe noted that libraries are recognized for meeting benchmarks within the bronze, silver and gold star levels of the program. While one star is awarded for both the bronze and gold levels, a total of five stars are awarded in the silver category - one silver star for each of the five literacies of PA Forward. “ We have a few more requirements to meet for the remaining three silver awards, then we will go for the gold,” Kehoe shared. APL is located at 413 Valley Ave., Atglen. Currently, the library has suspended inbuilding services. However, the library offers drive-up service at its porch window during operating hours - Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Patrons can ask staff members to make copies or send faxes, as well as print from

COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout Update Posted Health, led the Chester County Health Department to revise its original preregistration survey, moving it away from just Phases 1A and 1B and opening preregistration to all who live and work in Chester County. Because of the state’s changes in Phase 1A groups, everyone who falls into the group defined as “ages 16 to 64 with medical conditions� is asked to complete the form again to ensure they are moved to Phase 1A. Everyone who submits a preregistration form will receive a confirmation and regular updates regarding the status of vaccine distribution in Chester County.
The Chester County Health Department opens appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine based on the availability of vaccine to administer. Additional vaccination sites beyond the current site at the Chester County Government Services Center in West Chester - have been secured and were scheduled to begin operating recently as vaccine supplies allowed. Everything from vegetable pizza and curried squash soup to no-bake energy bites and Scottish shortbread is featured in a cookbook currently being offered by Boy Scout Troop 20 of Atglen. “Troop 20 Family Favorites,� a collection of recipes by troop members and their families, is being sold as a fundraiser to help finance the cost of troop activities in lieu of the troop’s annual fruit basket sale. The cookbook is divided into sections, including Appetizers and Beverages; Soups and Salads; Vegetables and Side Dishes; Main Dishes; Breads and Rolls; Desserts; Cookies and Candy; and This and That. “We began compiling the recipes for the cookbook in the beginning of October; all recipes were due by the end of October,� explained Scout mom Heather Jackson. “All Scouts were asked to submit as many recipes as they would like. They could ask anyone in their family for recipes.� Many of the recipes in the book are distinct because they are unique to each family, such as “Grandma’s Gobs,� which are sandwich cookies filled with icing, and “Porcupine Meatballs,� which are meatballs containing rice. Some recipes use slow cookers, such as the one for “Absolutely Ultimate Potato Soup.� There is also a recipe for slow cooker hot chocolate.

Once the recipes were compiled, Jackson found a publishing company, Morris Press, which created the book. “They have a ‘type and save’ program, where we typed all the recipes into their program,� she said. “This program (also) allowed us to choose our art that was in the book as well as write a little history on our troop.� In addition to the history and the assortment of recipes, the cookbook contains many helpful hints for home cooks. This reference information includes a section on how to use and identify herbs and spices, baking hints, details on how to buy the best fresh fruits and vegetables, measurement charts, cooking timetables and even a section on napkin folding. All of the recipes are included in the easy-to-use index. “It was a lot of work typing and putting together the book, but it was fun reading all the different and sometimes same recipes with the different families’ twists on them,� Jackson shared.

Residents of Chester County can now preregister for the COVID-19 vaccine by completing a form found on the Chester County Health Department’s COVID-19 web page. The form, for all individuals age 16 and over who live and work in Chester County, can be found at www.chesco.org/covidvaccine. Jackson said the cookbook has been a good way to raise money during the pandemic. “Most of the construction was done online,� she noted. “Pickup for books while selling (can) be contactless. I know personally my Scout has sold most of the books through asking family members to post on their social media pages. We did post on the Octorara Community Facebook page as well.� Cookbooks are also being sold at the Brass Eagle Restaurant, 5725 Lincoln Highway, Gap, and at Turkey Hill’s Gap location. New Reimbursement System Available To Veterans The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced that the Coatesville VA Medical Center now uses the new Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System (BTSSS) to reimburse eligible veterans and beneficiaries for travel to and from VA medical appointments. Penningtonville Church from pg 1 When the money was gathered, Dorville presented a check to Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich on Jan. 13. “Once we gave the check to the mayor, I wrote a letter explaining that, as a church, we want to be a blessing and we want (people) to know (their) debt has been paid for. We gave copies to the borough to send to the recipients,” he said, noting that residents also received a phone call from a borough employee, who is also a church member. “People she talked to were overjoyed.” The church had planned to raise funds through donations it received during an outdoor live Nativity on Christmas Eve, but the event was canceled due to inclement weather. Despite the cancellation, the congregation was able to raise the needed funds. “Because we had to adjust our game plan, people sent offerings to the church office,” Dorville said. The most recent outreach is representative of the church’s history of service. Also in January, the church organized a clothing drive and collected diapers, coats, blankets and gift cards for a local family with two young children whose home on Main Street in Aglen was
destroyed by a fire. Dorville also wrote a letter to congregation members thanking them for their generosity. “ We ... enabled members of our community to have a fresh start heading into 2021. They no longer have to carry the weight on their shoulders,” the letter stated. “You have given them real hope. I cannot tell you how touched I am by your generosity. You chose to spread joy and light. Thank you for making such a difference in our community.” Currently, the church offers livestreamed services at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays through its YouTube channel, and it plans to continue its community outreach. “I hope going forward we can do similar things to meet practical needs and bring the hope, joy and light of Jesus (to others) because that is what we are called to do,” Dorville said.
