n addition to spreading awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide, the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation continues to provide carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to local families. Most recently, detectors were given out at Our Lady of Consolation Parish in Parkesburg. “We do a Giving Tree every year for families in need. Everybody who we gave a gift to also received a carbon monoxide detector,” explained Janice Dagney, director of religious education. Donna Imbierowicz, who is also a member of the parish, delivered the detectors to the church in time for the Christmas distribution. While there, the children’s choir sang “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and dedicated it to Donna’s daughter, Carly.

Now that the holiday season has passed and it is time to take down the decorations, do not trash that live Christmas tree! Instead, consider donating it to a group of hungry goats that reside at Rusty Jax Farm in Parkesburg. According to Jacqui Maxwell, who operates the farm with her husband, Russell, goats love eating all parts of the tree, from R124665
the needles to the branches. “They will eat … down to bare tree,” said Jacqui, noting that pine needles provide trace nutrients and minerals and that pine trees act as a natural dewormer. “It also supplements their feed during the winter months when the pastures are barren. County to Replace Chesco Connect Buses AFL Donates Books to Libraries T h e C h e s te r C o u n t y Department of Community Transit has begun replacing existing gasoline-powered Chesco Connect buses with new vehicles powered by propane. According to Chester County CEO David Byerman, the move to new vehicles aligns with key priorities in the county’s Climate Action Plan and Strategic Plan. He noted that propane-powered vehicles are considered a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option, offering
lower operating costs and emission reductions. According to Todd Mouw, executive vice president of ROUSH CleanTech, developer of the Chesco Connect buses’ technology, the new vehicles will reduce air pollution from sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon dioxide. In addition, propane vehicles can achieve first-year fuel and maintenance savings of approximately $20,000 per vehicle. Chester County has placed seven new propane buses into service already,
with another nine expected to join the fleet in February 2026. Chesco Connect is the c o u n t y ’s c o m m u n i t y transit program, specializing in door-to-door shared ride transportation for residents of Chester County. More than 141,000 trips were provided to county residents during the 2024-25 fiscal year, with nearly 1.8 million service miles traveled.
Kentucky libraries devastated by flooding have received copies of “Lafayette: America’s Young Hero & Guest,” published by the Lafayette Bicentennial Brandywine Committee and the American Friends of Lafayette (AFL). More than 750 copies of the book were donated to schools in Kentucky and Indiana. Mowday, a Chester County author, was the chair of the local Brandywine Lafayette committee. He worked with

committee members AFL president Alan R. Hoffman and artist Shay Aubrey Allen to produce the book for students and young adults. Recently, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented Mowday the 17762026 DAR America 250! Commendation for his work on the Lafayette book. The bicentennial marked Lafayette’s return to the United States in 1824 and 1825 to honor him
for his contributions to America’s freedom during the American Revolution. The AFL organized more than 300 events during the bicentennial. The AFL is planning a second series of events to mark Lafayette’s first trip to the United States through his wounding at the battle of Brandywine on Sept. 11, 1777. Carly died on Nov. 22, 2014, at the age of 16 along with her friend Daulton Pointek, 17, when a broken exhaust pipe allowed deadly CO gas to enter the car they were driving through the passenger air vents. Both were students at Octorara Area High School. Following the tragedy, the family started the foundation and began giving out CO detectors. “My goal in 2025 was to distribute 500 CO detectors. We hit 600,” Donna reported. “We hope to beat that in 2026.” The detectors have been given to organizations that can distribute them, including the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD) in Parkesburg, the Cochranville Fire Company, Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO) and Safe Kids Chester County. “I try to choose places that can get them into the hands of more people that need them,” Donna said. “I also gave detectors to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.” Many of the CO detectors are donated by Lowe’s of Avon Grove, where Donna works. Others are purchased through community donations. Additionally, the family travels to Harrisburg each year in November, which is declared as CO Awareness Month. Matt Meyer from the state of Delaware, where Carly was born. Donna’s slogan for the foundation’s work is “Save a Family, Save a Pet,” words that took on a deeper meaning last year when a detector was installed in a local home by a member of the KVFD. “Last year when one was installed, it went off. The CO level in the house was off the charts,” Donna shared. “We do know we are saving lives. I know our efforts are paying off.” She said the foundation is also a way to honor Carly’s memory. “I don’t want Carly to be a statistic,” she said. “Every day is a gift, and it’s important to use your passion to make a difference. That’s what keeps me going. I’m trying to find ways to feel good, and our foundation has done that for me.” To learn more about the foundation, visit www.cmiaware ness.org. According to the website, carbon monoxide is a “silent killer” because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless and cannot be detected by humans without the help of an alarm or detector. People are asked to take precautions against CO poisoning by installing carbon monoxide detectors along with smoke detectors in their homes and checking the batteries in the spring and fall. Homeowners should also have their home heating systems inspected regularly by a certified professional. In addition, vehicle owners should make a habit of opening the garage door before starting their cars, and they should never leave a car running with the garage door closed. Tips for preventing carbon monoxide poisoning in vehicles include maintaining the car’s exhaust system and mufflers, partially opening a window if sitting for a long time in an idling vehicle and installing a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector in the vehicle. donated pumpkins, which are also fed to the goats. “We ask for pumpkins around Halloween and Thanksgiving and at Christmas, and we ask for Christmas trees for our herd,” said Jacqui. “We have a parking area down by the barn. (Visitors) will see the pumpkins. We will toss the trees over (the fence) as needed. We do ask that there is no tinsel, as that can be quite dangerous for the goats to ingest. I check the trees before tossing them over.” Raising goats is a hobby for the couple, who both have full-time jobs. Jacqui is a licensed behavior consultant, and Russell is a carpenter. “Our mission is to spread joy through goats. They are fun and happy animals, and they are so entertaining and loving,” Jacqui said. “When people bring (tree) donations, they can come and see the goats if they want to and play with them. They are very friendly.” Future plans call for milking the goats and using the milk to make cheese and soap. “This is our third year with goats.
