ast spring, when Tammy Shondelmyer first heard about the position of director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, she thought about her passion for rearing and nurturing children. “The job beckoned to me,” recalled Tammy. “A part of me said, ‘I think I would really enjoy that - making a different kind of investment in children.’” Tammy soon applied for the job at the church where her husband, Clint, serves as pastor of discipleship and where she was raised. Her father, Walter Venman, served as pastor there for more than 40 years. In April, she was offered the position, and she officially started in August. “I literally grew up here,” said Tammy, who now lives in the house where she was raised. She attended High Point Baptist Academy in Geigertown and after graduating went to Cedarville University in Ohio, later transferring to Philadelphia College of Bible, now Cairn University. She graduated in 1989 with degrees in education and Bible.
True Target archery, and True Serve volleyball. “We were set to hold True Goal (hockey), but it didn’t happen because of COVID,” recalled Tammy. Tammy wondered what it would be like working with her husband at the church that her family has been part of for so long, but she noted that it is all going well. She was especially pleased to learn how well the people working in children’s ministries were doing their jobs. “Doug (Kauffman, director of children’s outreach ministries), did a great job using the strengths of the people we had (in the athletic programs),” Tammy said. “We didn’t start any of those ministries without people in place who were coaches in (those areas).” Looking forward, Tammy is set on putting COVID issues behind her so she can focus on people. “Everything I have invested in so far has been COVID related, (but) for me the win of the job is working with people. Adopt A Soldier Project Sends Record Number Of Gift Boxes BY FRANCINE FULTON
This year’s Adopt a Soldier Project held by the Parkesburg and Christiana Lions Clubs netted a record number of boxes filled with gifts and personal care items that were sent to military personnel overseas. Past Lions district governor Nany Gauthier, chair of the Pennsylvania Lions Adopt a Soldier Project, reported that 160 boxes were sent this year. “I’m so incredibly

Having met Clint at college in Philadelphia, Tammy soon married. The couple moved to Indiana, Pa., where Clint was pastoring a church. The couple later lived in Venice, Fla., and in Springfield, Va. Tammy began her teaching career in western Pennsylvania. She has taught kindergarten, several elementary grades, and English and language arts to middle-schoolers. After returning to the area, she taught ninth-grade English at Linville Hill Christian School in Gap. She noted that she has enjoyed teaching multiple grades. “I liked learning about each new age group, and I loved learning the nuances of that age group,” she said, adding that she has fond memories of her time at Linville Hill. In her new position at the church, Tammy was quickly dealing with the ramifications of COVID19 restrictions in the church’s ministries that encompass children from birth to grade 12. Programs range from nursery care through Sunday school and youth group, but the church also runs many midweek athletic programs. Camps the organization runs, include Upward basketball, True Swing softball,

National History Day (NHD) is a year-round academic program for sixth- through 12th-grade students across the nation. The Chester County History Center (CCHC) is the official coordinator for NHD in Chester and Delaware counties. Each year, over 2,000 local students participate at their schools, and 300 advance to compete at the regional or county level. Many continue on to the state and national competitions. CCHC invites individuals to compete in, judge, or sponsor
NHD in support of history education. Southeastern Pennsylvania NHD takes place on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27. The owners have lived in Atglen since 2001. In 2014, they bought land on which to build a house and the shop. They cleared trees, added a driveway, built the house and garage and were able to move to the property in 2016. They finished the garage, which opened for business on Nov. 25, 2019. Make Good Use Of The Christmas Tree After The Holidays BY FRANCINE FULTON
Many families have chosen to display a live Christmas tree this season, which means more trees will be disposed of after the holidays. However, people are encouraged not to throw their real Christmas tree into the trash. Rather, trees can be reused or recycled in other ways, such as for mulch or to create a bird feeder. After all decorations, hooks, garland and tinsel strands have been removed, homeowners can place the tree in their backyards for the birds. “My favorite way to recycle your real tree is as a bird feeder,” said Dawn White, education director at the Green Valleys Association at Welkinweir. “You can lay the tree on (the ground) or stand the tree in the ground and decorate it with strung peanuts, popcorn or cranberries to attract a variety of birds.” People may make additional edible “ornaments” for the tree. “You can make pinecone bird feeders with peanut butter or vegetable shortening rolled in birdseed, then hang them on the tree,” White said. Other options include adding fresh orange slices, suet cakes and strings of unsweetened cereal such as Cheerios. All these items will attract birds, which can sit in the branches for shelter. Ornaments can be replaced as needed throughout the winter months to provide a good food supply for all visiting birds to eat. In addition, Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means their branches may be removed and chipped. “You can mulch your tree to enrich your soil for spring plants,” White noted. Another suggestion provided by the National Christmas Tree Association is to sink the tree into a local lake or pond because trees can create a safe space and feeding area for fish. Eckman, and Lion Robin McKenna, a teacher at the Octorara Area Elementary School, who helped pack boxes. Parkesburg resident Mike Camburn, whose aunt Jill Scott is a member of the Parkesburg Lions Club, organized his friends to provide more than 12 boxes and extra shipping money. McKenna and Dr. Michele Orner, superintendent of the Octorara Area School District, promoted the program among the Octorara employees, and second- and third-graders from the elementary school created handmade

Well, we almost doubled last year’s total.” As part of the annual effort, Gauthier collected the boxes at her home in Parkesburg. Lions Club members; her husband, Dave; and others inspected the collected items and prepared the boxes for shipping. To adopt a soldier, community members were asked to fill a box and to donate the $15.05 needed for postage. Items placed in the boxes included food and snacks,
boxes were mailed on Dec. 11 and we did another shipment on Dec. 14 so that the boxes could be delivered in time for Christmas.” Gauthier said she is very proud to live in a community whose residents are so generous. “Our community is just incredible,” she added. “People are thinking beyond themselves and giving back.”
