Resolve To Volunteer In The New Year BY FRANCINE FULTON
As 2022 begins, representatives from local nonprofit organizations hope that people will list volunteering among their New Year’s resolutions. Among the agencies seeking
volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills is the Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC). No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a bachelor’s degree. See Resolve To Volunteer pg 4

Lions Provide Gifts From Home To Soliders Serving Overseas BY FRANCINE FULTON
ervicemen and women stationed overseas received a gift box from home this holiday season through the Adopt a Soldier Project, sponsored by the Parkesburg Lions Club. As part of the annual effort, club members collected boxes filled with gifts and personal care items, which they delivered to the Parkesburg Post Office on Dec. 13 so that they could be mailed out in time for Christmas. Past Lions district governor Nancy Gauthier, chair of the Pennsylvania Lions Adopt a Soldier Project, reported that 234 boxes were mailed out to soldiers in Egypt and Kuwait. “We started (the Adopt a Solider Project) five years ago (after) I read an article in the Lions magazine about a club that was doing something like this, but it was called ‘Shoeboxes for Soldiers,’” she said. Gauthier adapted the program to use flat rate boxes from the post office because shoeboxes come in different sizes. Along with the individual boxes that each solider received, an additional 10 boxes were sent overseas
received with the help of Jean Ann Curry from Customers Bank. Gauthier used the money to purchase items for the boxes. Among the other contributors was Lion Robin McKenna, a teacher at the Octorara Area Elementary School, who had her third- and fourth-grade classes make handmade cards to be placed inside the boxes. Alison Mannetta’s kindergarten class at Octorara also participated in the project by collecting enough supplies to fill three packages that included shampoo, lotion, socks, snacks, playing cards and DVDs. The students also included personal letters in the boxes. “I saw the Lions Club Facebook post about the solider collection, and I wanted to participate with my class,” Mannetta stated in a letter to Dr. Michele Orner, superintendent of the Octorara Area School District, who is also a member of the Lions Club. “We wrote each soldier a letter and colored pictures to include with the packages. It was a great experience for us. We included the school’s address in hopes to possibly hear back from one of the package recipients.”

containing leftover items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. “I put a note in for the commander to divvy up the (extra) items as needed,” Gauthier said. Gauthier noted that the gift-giving program was a community effort and that many participants contributed to its success. Her daughter, Danielle Gauthier Salada, promoted it to the employees of J.D. Eckman, and they provided boxes as well as cash donations. Parkesburg resident Mike Camburn organized his friends to provide 25 boxes. Gauthier collected the boxes at her home in Parkesburg. Lions Club members, including Gauthier’s husband, Dave, prepared the boxes for shipping. “Several Lions spent many days with me packing boxes sometimes until late at night,” she noted. Those who provided assistance at the post office included Kaden Salada, Gauthier’s grandson; Christiana Lions Club president Jim Groff; Parkesburg Lions Club president Jane Rice; and Parkesburg Lion Mike Rice. Gauthier was aided in her effort with a $1,000 grant that the club

Sarah Ames, sergeant at station 391 with Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR), first became interested in firefighting when she was 18 years old and living in Christiana. Now, she is the first female officer at GSFR, earning her sergeant rank in January 2020. The Coatesville High School graduate had always felt the urge to serve. “I felt it was my responsibility to give back somehow,” stated Ames. “I was able-bodied, young and willing, and I had time.” When she moved to Christiana, Ames lived close enough to the firehouse to be

Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. “Many of our matched friends are now meeting in person while still following all CDC guidelines,” said Donna Kueny, program manager. “Also, we are in great need of male volunteers, as we have many male participants on our wait list. The Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is seeking tutors to provide weekly, one-to-one English language instruction for adult immigrants or refugees living in Chester County. Prospective tutors are invited to attend a virtual tutor training workshop on Monday, Jan. 24;
Thursday, Jan. 27; and Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 9 to 11 a.m. each morning. The six-hour course will prepare volunteers to tutor a non-native English speaker. According to Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, tutors are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program. Tutors and students will decide whether to start meeting virtually or in person. The goal is to eventually meet in person at libraries, churches, coffee shops or cafe areas in local grocery stores when both parties feel it is safe to do so. Potrako reported that there are more than 150 adults who speak 22 different languages who are in need of a tutor. “VEP tutors come from all walks of life; a teaching background or knowledge of another language is not necessary,” she noted. About seven years ago, when Ames, who has a degree in environmental science from Southern New Hampshire University (she is now studying for her master’s), began working in Middletown in an environmental safety and health position, she moved to New Holland and quickly volunteered with GSFR. “I spend three nights a week here doing and preparing for trainings and committees,” she said, adding that she loves to teach. She also runs a few calls each week. “I love the excitement,” she said. “I love interacting with people and trying to make a positive difference.” Ames noted that because of the variety of work GSFR does - aiding in water rescues, medical assists, motor vehicle accidents, and fighting fires volunteers spend as much time in the classroom as on calls. “It’s a whole range of things you have to stay proficient in,” she stated. “Firefighters have to enjoy learning. These guys are smart, and they spend their
weekends doing classes.” As one of the few female firefighters in Lancaster County, Ames has a passion for bringing more young women into the field. “We have some junior females at GSFR, and I have been trying to mentor them a bit,” said Ames, who noted it can be overwhelming for young women to join what has traditionally been a masculine profession. “You quickly have to learn to be assertive and confident in yourself,” she said. Ames also has deep concerns for the well-being of her fellow volunteers. “I am super passionate about mental health among the fire service (personnel),” she said, noting that about two years ago GSFR lost a member to suicide. “Now I harp on these guys about their mental health,” she said. Good News from pg 5 In May, readers met Scott Davis, a 2021 graduate of Octorara JuniorSenior High School, who created a time capsule that will be opened in 50 years. Items placed in the decorative cherry box, which Scott handcrafted in the school woodshop, included a school facemask that was worn during the pandemic, hand sanitizer and a blank COVID-19 vaccination card. Also included was an issue of the Community Courier newspaper. Parkesburg, which once had its own professional baseball team called the PICO Ironmen, celebrated its baseball history with a Baseball Festival at Minch Park in the summer of 2021. The event, which featured old-time baseball games, was presented by the South Eastern Pennsylvania Travel Baseball Association (SEPTBA). The Ironmen team was created by Horace Beale Jr., president of the Parkesburg Iron Company (PICO). His team played at PICO Field, known today as Minch Park, where it faced players like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Casey Stengel. People who were highlighted in 2021 included Jed King, the head football coach at Octorara JuniorSenior High School, who was named
the Coach of the Year for Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League; Heather Furlong, who was named the new school principal at West Fallowfield Christian School; and Father John Van de Paer, who previously served at Our Lady of Consolation (OLC) Parish in Parkesburg and who turned 100 on Nov. 29. Community groups were also active in 2021, including the Parkesburg Lions Club, the Christiana Lions Club, the Parkesburg Area Business Association (PABA), the Parkesburg POINT youth center and the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC). The area’s three local libraries Atglen Public Library, Moores Memorial Library in Christiana and the Parkesburg Library - continued to offer programming in 2021 despite limitations caused by the pandemic. The Moores Memorial Library started a new and unique program where children can visit regularly with the library bunny. APL continued its renovation of a new building that will open as its new location in 2022, and teenager Armen Caravantes started a community garden program at the
New Plant Slated To Open In Atglen International Paper plans to build a state-of-the-art corrugated packing plant in Atglen Borough, Chester County, next year. The plant will bring about 150 new jobs to the area. The facility will allow International Paper to expand its industrial packaging footprint in southeast Pennsylvania and the northeast United States. The Atglen plant will be the first box plant International Paper will have built in the United States in more than 30 years. To further aid in helping International Paper to locate in Atglen, the Wolf administration

The community-wide event, which will be held on Friday to Sunday, May 20 to 22, will include a large parade, fireworks and activities in Minch Park. Parkesburg said goodbye to Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde, who was known as a community icon.
