Blue Streaks Harness Power of Success BY JEFF FALK

thletic success comes in all shapes, forms and sizes. Every team, student-athlete and coach defines success differently. The Manheim Township girls’ soccer team measures success in effort, accountability, relationships and championships. The Blue Streaks also assess success in historical terms. “Obviously, we had a talented group of players who put in a lot of hard work,” said Clayton Suydam, who recently completed his first season as Manheim Township’s head coach after serving the program for a number of years as an assistant. “This team was really selfless. They thoroughly enjoyed celebrating each other. I think we tried to strike the right balance between working really hard and having fun. (The players) were way better when they were a little goofy and comfortable. Almost all

Everybody deserves a place to call their own. Everybody needs a home. Servant Stage’s new home is also the nonprofit’s first. Not only are Servant Stage’s new digs a product of growth, the location is also a space where it can continue to grow. “It’s almost hard to put into words,” said Johnathan Bauer, the founder and executive director of Servant Stage. “It hits every once in a while. This is a home. Like, ‘Wow, this is for real.’ It hasn’t fully sunk in yet. There are a lot of firsts in this place that are really special.” Following 12 years of serving the Lancaster County

Representing the People BY JEFF FALK
Steve Mentzer is a 69-year-old resident of Manheim Township who attends Lives Changed by Christ Church in Lancaster. Steve and his wife, Sally, are the parents of two grown children and the grandparents of four, and when son Mike and daughter Lynn were growing up, pets were part of their household. A man of the people, Steve has been a Pennsylvania state representative for 13 years, and he’s been elected and re-elected a total of seven times. “The general philosophy of a Pennsylvania state representative is that you represent your constituents in matters of laws and budgets,” said Steve. “We try to get a feel for our constituents when we vote on issues. We’ve got to weigh each issue. You want to consider your constituents the best you can. You want to be available to your constituents if they ask questions. We attend a lot of community events because those are the things you want to make a priority because you want to be with your constituents.” Steve is one of 203 representatives in Pennsylvania’s state house. He represents more than 65,000 residents who live in parts or all of Manheim Township, Conestoga Township, East Lampeter Township, West Lampeter Township, Manor Township and Pequea Township. “My district has some rural areas, farming areas, a little bit of suburban areas and some commercial areas,” said Steve. “I would say my district is very diverse. The district I represent isn’t considered a needy district. My people come to the office when they have an issue with the state. The most important thing to my people is that they
