St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 108 E. Liberty St., Lancaster, will sponsor its 30th annual Christmas Day dinner for those who will spend Christmas alone or are unable to afford a meal. The meal will be served on Wednesday, Dec. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Transportation is available in the Lancaster city area by calling St. Anne’s Church at 717-392-2225 or Lisa Wood at 717-669-6282 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. before Friday, Dec. 20. The Lancaster Contra Dance will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, from 7 to 10 p.m. The event is a group social dance for people of all ages with Caroline Barnes calling with the band Sleigh for Four. A workshop for new dancers will be held at 6:15 p.m. There is no need to bring a partner, as partners are exchanged after each dance. Filling The Grain Bin To Ease The Burden Loan Program Will Promote Trade School Enrollment By Ann Mead Ash
Mindy Lapp, Jack Herr, and Sean High, founders of Ease the Burden (ETB), have created a brochure to help county residents understand the mission of the organization. “This is a flowchart we made to make it simple for people,” explained Lapp. “It’s a way to fund needs in the Lancaster community by filling in the gaps that might not necessarily be covered by most organizations,” added Herr. ETB was founded to help county residents who do not need help under normal circumstances, but who have come up against a hardship. “We are here for the working class who maybe by a few hundred dollars a year don’t qualify for help,” said Lapp. Hardships might include health care expenses, housing problems, or other expenses that could squeeze an individual or a family to the breaking point. “This is for the family See Ease The Burden pg 4

Schreiber Center Completes Portico, Plans Expansion The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster Countybased provider of pediatric therapy services throughout central Pennsylvania, celebrated the renovation of the front entrance of its building, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, with a ribbon-cutting event under the new portico on Nov. 14. Schreiber leaders and supporters gathered for the event, which was planned primarily to thank the community for supporting the project. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 14, Schreiber Center president James DeBord thanked supporters who made possible the new portico, a project that sets up the next major construction plan for Schreiber: a three-story, $6 million expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space.
Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) has launched the E. Ann Klein Trade, Occupational, and Technical Education Loan Program, also known as TOTE Loan Program. The new TOTE Loan Program provides interest-free loans to Lancaster County residents who have earned a high school diploma or GED and are planning to attend an eligible trade, occupational, or technical program. Students are eligible to receive one loan totaling up to $3,400 to aid in their tuition expenses. “Along with federal student aid, that gets them a little bit closer (to covering school costs),” said LDHL board president Samantha Eck. Day charity motorcycle ride along the Susquehanna River, and organizers are crossing their fingers for more of the same this time around. “Last year we raised over $35,000, and it was our biggest year for the amount of money raised. That brings our total for the 10 years we’ve had this ride to over $160,000 that we’ve raised for veterans,” stated organizer Tyler Stumpf. Laurel Dance Company (LDC) will present its 17th production of “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2:30 and 7 p.m. at Conestoga Valley High School’s theater, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The show is being choreographed and directed by Kristina Grant of Harrisburg. Dancers in this year’s production include students from Balance Dance Studio, Cavod Academy of the Arts, Cricket’s Performing Arts, Dance Dynamix, LanCo Performing Arts, Laurel Dance Company’s studio, Pulse Dance Studio, and Susquehanna Dance Center in Lancaster County as well as McCann’s School of Dance in Dauphin County and
Artists in Motion Performing Arts in Schuylkill County. The classic holiday ballet centers around the Stahlbaum family. This year’s Clara will be played by Anna Weissend, a seventh-grade student at Elizabethtown Area Middle School who will take part in her second “Nutcracker” performance with LDC. Other returning cast members include Grace Anne Acebo as the Sugar Plum Fairy; her father, Brian Acebo, as Opa Stahlbaum for the fourth year; Joelle Maier as Snow Queen and Marzipan Lead; Kaitlyn Staskel as the Ballerina doll, Arabian Lead, and Flower; and Kassie Leid as
Clara’s brother, Fritz. Jamie Martin is joining the cast this year as the Cavalier and Rat King. Adamo Caridi is new to the role as Clara’s father. David Hurst is the only member of the cast to have performed in each of LDC’s “Nutcracker” productions. The Dew Drop Fairy will be played by Courtney Taylor, a sophomore at Warwick High School. Two high school seniors, Emma Melochick and Madalyn Rissler, are part of the production. Emma attends Minersville Area High School and is the Governess, a new role for her this year. Madalyn attends Ephrata High School and will perform the roles of Party Adult, Snowflake,
Chinese Corps, and Flower. Madalyn’s first dance teacher, Karen Hershman, will return as Clara’s mother. Loan Program from pg 1 Eck noted that while LDHL has offered interest-free loans to college students from Lancaster County for nearly 60 years, this is the first time it has created a lending program for students attending technical or trade schools. To ease into the TOTE Loan Program, interest-free loans will initially be available to students who will attend the 12-month or 18-month Practical Nursing or 16-month Automotive Technology Specialized Associate Degree programs at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). “It’s a pilot, (so) I’m sure we will learn things doing it,” Eck said. “Our goal will be to open (the program) to any (school), but we have to start with baby steps.” The funding for the loans came from the estate of E. Ann Klein, who died in 2007.
Klein had distributed funds to several organizations, with the stipulation that they receive interest payments from the invested money for the first 10 years. Now that the time has expired, LDHL has received the principal, and the resulting cash in hand will allow the funding of loans. When deciding how to use the bequest, the LDHL board looked at Klein’s life for inspiration. Klein was the daughter of one of the owners who turned New Holland Machine Company into a thriving business. She held a pilot’s license and had an interest in antique cars. According to the Elizabethtown Historical Society, Klein and her husband had more than 55 antique automobiles stored in Elizabethtown. When Klein was unable to source tires and other parts to restore her vehicles, she launched the Uni-
versal Tire Company and later Klein Kars. While business principles can be learned in a traditional four-year college, trades like auto repair are typically leaned at a different kind of school, and LDHL wanted to support those efforts. “This is a need that our community has,” Eck remarked, adding that while public perception may be that attending trade, occupational, and technical programs is relatively low cost, the reality is that tuition may run as high as $20,000. LDHL expects to receive applications from adults who have already entered the workforce and now want to change careers or to enhance their skills, Eck said. “We’re learning how big of an audience there is (for this),” she added. Unlike the existing college loan pro-
gram, which has firm deadlines and mails checks every year on Aug. 1, the TOTE Loan Program will have a rolling application process. Funds will be disbursed in time for new sessions at the LCCTC. Like the college loan program, the Student Aid Report (SAR) generated after the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine the size of a TOTE loan. Borrowers will also need co-signers for the loans, and repayment will begin six months after the recipient graduates or leaves school. funds, but we could bridge that gap.” Lapp agreed, adding, “We want to connect churches and ministries to partner with us to get needs met.” High went on to explain that ETB is based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, who filled the grain bins during the years of plenty. “When the famine hit, the grain bins were full,” he said. “That is our concept. We will raise funds to fill the grain bin, and we will have resources there.” High went on to say that when a partner organization finds a need and submits a grant request, ETB should be able to react quickly. One tradition the ride has maintained through the years is the naming of one rider as “Baby New Year,” who must ride the first mile dressed in a baby costume. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters, the 2019 Baby New Year, relegated the role to Teresa Ardini of Manheim for 2020. Ardini is creating her own costume and will announce next year’s lucky - or not so lucky, depending on the weather honoree after the ride. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a tradi-
tional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. A silent auction will feature plenty of motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and other items, including a T-shirt quilt created by TLC-Quilting. Another fun tradition is the presentation of a plaque to the individual who travels the farthest to participate in the ride. Motorcyclists have come from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and beyond in past years. The winner of last year’s plaque rode from his home north of the Poconos. The new construction will feature an expanded physical therapy department that will include a treatment suite with state-of-the-art concussion protocol and traumatic brain
injury therapies. A new eco-friendly therapy garden will be built next to the expanded building. Schreiber is in the process of obtaining the necessary municipal approvals to begin construction. A capital campaign is expected to begin in 2020. The West Hempfield Fire and Rescue Company, 3476 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will try something new regarding its holiday events, which have traditionally been held on separate weekends. This year, both the Breakfast With Santa and the craft and vendor show will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. The meal will be served from 8 to 11 a.m., and the show will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “I’m hoping people enjoy it,” said Tara Ney, who handles membership and coordinates events for the fire company. “I feel it will help pass time in a fun way for those who may have to wait for breakfast.” Family-oriented and child-friendly Christmas movies will be shown throughout breakfast, and there will be a coloring table where youngsters may color a paper ornament to take home or place on the fire company’s Christmas tree. Additionally, Santa Claus will be available to pose for photos during the breakfast hours. Guests should bring their own cameras.

The craft and vendor show will have 40 retailers, offering products like homemade dog biscuits and pet items, wooden decor ladders, wreaths, hand-carved signs, natural salves, embroidery, and blacksmithmade items. “We also have your more everyday vendors such as Mary Kay, Color Street nails, and Tastefully Simple,” Ney said. “We have a little bit of everything and truly something for everybody.” The proceeds from the breakfast and the show will go to the West Hempfield Fire and Rescue Company’s operating budget. “This helps with things such as apparatus maintenance, station maintenance and upkeep, fuel, training classes, and so on,” Ney explained. LSO Program To Aid Students The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) invites community members to donate to the Play It Forward program. Donations will go toward purchasing musical equipment and accessories requested by music teachers in the School District of Lancaster on behalf of students in need. In 2018, the Play It Forward program helped hundreds of students in need. LSO’s goal for 2019 is to once again provide all the items on the wish lists of all students who need materials to boost their music education. Gift baskets will be delivered to teachers before the Christmas holiday. LSO’s Sound Discovery Program has been providing musical instruments to children in need in the School District of Lancaster for more than 10 years, but those instruments require accessories and maintenance that not all students and their families can afford. When LSO discovered that teachers were using their own personal funds to purchase supplies for struggling students, it created the Play It Forward program.
Since 2015, the LSO has been asking music teachers in the School District of Lancaster to submit wish lists of needed items like reeds, strings, valve oil, and cork grease on behalf of their students. Through the support of donors and sponsors, LSO purchases items on the lists and delivers holiday gift baskets to music teachers. Members of the community can support the program by donating any amount. With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox - including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them con-
tinue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects.
Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.
