Red Rose To Celebrate 20 Years Of Shows BY ANN MEAD ASH
fter holding a livestreamed show with minimal attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020, Ursula Wolfer, director of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club’s upcoming revue, is excited to be staging an in-person show that will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club. “It’s called ‘Magical Memories,’ and it’s a look back and a re-creation of all our greatest hits over the past 20 years,” said Wolfer. “Our principal skaters will do songs that were featured numbers in past shows.” Principal skaters for 2021 are Amelia Atkinson, Lily Babione, Evan Bertz, and Lauren King, along with area high school seniors Cassie Peck, Isabella Kettles, and Navya Reddy. “Magical Memories” will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature more than 30 skaters ranging from beginners to adults. Among the show numbers will be features from past shows including

According to Michael Kurland, youth sports and activities manager with Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department, the goal of the Winter Break Camp the department is planning is twofold. “We are trying to give parents a break to recover from the holidays and give the kids an opportunity to unwind and have fun before they go back to school,” said Kurland, who noted that this will be the first winter camp the organization has held. Manheim Township To Hold Camp
“Arabian Nights” from the “Princess Classics” show, “Hoedown Throwdown” from “Toy Story,” “Neverland” from “Finding Neverland,” “Defying Gravity” from “Oz on Ice,” “What Time is it?” from the “High School Musical” show, “Come Alive” from “Mirror Mirror,” “Circle of Life” from “Festival of Life,” and “Ugg-A-Wugg” from “Peter Pan.” According to Wolfer, audience members should expect to see a presentation that will draw on skaters’ skills and acting ability. “We will have some high-flying double jumps, including double axles,” she reported. “(Skaters) showcase all kinds of spins that require extreme flexibility.” She added that fancy footwork will include twists and turns that represent the highest level of U.S. figure skating rankings. “(Skaters) work hard at emotionally bringing the characters to life,” Wolfer stated, adding that theatrical movements that require unison and teamwork among skaters will be featured as well. The final performance will bring back costumes from featured skating solos throughout the years. Wolfer has confidence in the Red

Camp, for children in first through eighth grades, will be held from Monday, Dec. 27, through Friday, Dec. 31, at the Overlook Activities Center, 2099 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We offer before- and after-care options, so they can come as early as 7 a.m. and stay as late as 6 p.m.,” said Kurland. A limit of 25 attendees has been set, and children will be expected to bring their own lunches and snacks. Campers will be divided into age groups, which Kurland said will probably be first through fourth grades and fifth through eighth grades. Kurland has arranged for college students who serve as summer camp counselors with Manheim Township Recreation to work at the camp, and he hopes many of the campers will be familiar with the
counselors. Among the many activities Kurland has planned for the campers are board games, roller skating, kickball, dodgeball, flag football, and Steal the Bacon. “We will show a holiday movie and do holiday crafts,” said Kurland. One special event will involve an animal show. “It is called Creatures Great and Small,” said Kurland, who noted that the presentation will be educational and interactive. “The kids will be able to touch them and pet them and hold them,” he said, adding that the animals will include reptiles, ducks, bunnies, birds, dogs, and cats. “We will keep them busy from the time they get here until they go home,” said Kurland. needed to help make that happen. “We are really looking for the support of the community and for coaches to get involved (because) the need will be greater than ever to serve more girls this spring,” said West. Teams have also formed at community sites, such as parks and churches. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where they coach. West added that mothers, fathers, and community members can be coaches. “You don’t have to be a runner,” she said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to coach girls.” Volunteer GOTR coaches receive benefits, including guaranteeing a daughter a spot on a team and receiving a discount for her registration. Free CPR and first aid training are offered, and all coaches are trained to lead teams. “It’s a chance to be a positive role model and inspiration to the girls - a leader and someone to talk to,” said West. According to Sandoe, coaches have told her that they witness positive changes in team members. “They say, ‘I have seen how it transforms how the girls think about themselves and each other and their attitudes,’” she reported, adding that teachers have told her they believe in the impact of the program because they see GOTR lessons lived out in their classrooms. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased longterm physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season will open Tuesday, Feb. 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 7. The GOTR 5K presented by OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The fall 5K at Millersville attracted 1,000 runners, including 400 girls, running buddies, and immediate family members. “If you’re interested in learning more about coaching … we encourage (you) to reach out,” said Sandoe. Etiquette Workshop Planned Lancaster Modern Etiquette will offer a Dining With Style dining etiquette workshop on Saturday, Dec. 18, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Historic Stoner House, located in Overlook Park at 601 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The goal of this workshop is to guide youths ages 8 to 14 in how to behave properly in any dining situation. Students will learn the importance of greetings, dinner
conversation, and other simple courtesies so that they may be more confident and positive in their social interactions. The students will also receive training on setting the table, eating soup and bread properly, using napkins and utensils, and more. Founded in 2020, Lancaster Modern Etiquette is dedicated to teaching the principles of proper etiquette, good manners, and kind-
ness. It aims to provide men, women, and children with polished social graces and the confidence to succeed in social and professional arenas. The workshop will include a refreshment and a dining etiquette manual. There is a fee to attend.
