Bob Courtois’ personal specialty is his peanut butter cookies. But he also bakes a scrumptious white chocolate cranberry cookie that can postpone a diet.

Bob’s wife, Patti Courtois, is the publicity coordinator for St. Peter’s Church’s upcoming fundraiser.

“Bob’s peanut butter cookies are his best,” said Patti. “He’ll top them with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup or a Buckeye. His recipe is a family recipe, and it’s been handed down. He always says his special ingredient is love.”

Bob’s peanut butter and white chocolate cranberry flavors will be just two of an assortment of cookies baked with love available at this year’s

edition of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church’s annual Cookie Walk. The community event and holiday fundraiser will take place in the church’s Family Life Center at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The holiday cookies can be mixed or matched and taken home in small or large containers, and the cookies will be made available for sale on a cash-only basis. All proceeds from the event will benefit orphans at Busoka Lutheran Church in Tanzania, St. Peter’s companion congregation in Africa.

“You have to be able to close the lids on the boxes,” said Patti. “One of the (Tanzania Mission Committee) members will talk about why we’re there. It’s kind of a coming together of community members and

Without hope, there is nothing. Services that provide hope where there once was none or little can be life changing.

Now I Can Foundation deals in the business of hope.

“Only God can make miracles happen,” said Allison Ebersole, Now I Can’s executive director. “But we’re helping make miracles happen, and we’re giving families hope. The sooner we can (start working with) kids, the better chance we have of making a change.”

Located at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz, Now I Can Foundation Northeast aims to provide hope to families with children disabled by disorders like cerebral palsy, spina bifida and other gross motor delays and genetic conditions. The results don’t lie.

Give a kid a stage and she or he will perform for a day. Teach a kid to dance and she or he will perform for a lifetime.

Give a dancer a cause for which to perform and you’ve got “A Season for Wishes.”

“You focus on teaching proper dance and proper technique, but also how to perform,” said Lisa Kalinowski, the founder and artistic director of Lititz Academy of Dance. “We liken it to dancing from the inside out and dancing with your heart, and that can be a process. When you do it, it becomes so much

“Some of our patients come in not walking. Some leave walking. Some leave running,” said Ebersole. “I love being able to see the change that the therapists can make. I like being able to connect with families. I love when moms cry, because that was me with my daughter. They’re tears of happiness. Until you live it, you can’t understand it. I’ve been in a similar boat for 16 years.”

The secret to the Now I Can Foundation’s success is the relatively basic concept of intensive physical therapy. It’s similar to regular physical therapy, only ramped up a few intensity notches.

At Now I Can, pediatric patients condense 57 hours of physical therapy into a three-week period, something like four hours a day,

PennDOT Provides Tips for Wintry Weather

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently offered ways the public can prepare for the winter season. Members of the public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 state-maintained roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow-truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. The information is provided via PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location technology, which uses units in the department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing a truck’s location.

To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, PennDOT

offers operational information and traveler resources at www.pa.gov/agencies/ penndot/traveling-in-pa/ winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts.

Motorists should prepare for potential wintry weather by ensuring they have supplies in their cars before heading out, including food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, a cellphone charger, hand or foot warmers, a windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies. If motorists encounter snow- or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid distractions.

more fun and so much more free.”

Lititz Academy of Dance’s CoJoMotion Dance Company will present this year’s edition of its annual holiday recital, “A Season for Wishes,” at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at Lancaster Mennonite School’s High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Tickets can be purchased prior to the event at https://tinyurl .com/4xdps66w or at the door the day of the performance.

All proceeds from “A Season for Wishes” will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley.

“I love Christmas, I love dance, and I love this charity,” said Kalinowski. “Seeing the transformation of these kids and what it means to them is amazing. To see them giving it their all is incredible. When the senior girls bring the big check on stage and reveal how much we’ve

made, the kids are sobbing and crying. To see what it means to them, I can’t even tell you what it does to my heart.”

Consisting of more than 20 dance routines - from the genres of ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, hiphop, musical theater and Rockette style - “A Season for Wishes” will take about 150 minutes to perform. During a 20-minute intermission, this year’s amount raised for MakeA-Wish Foundation will be unveiled.

“It’s the most beautiful, joyous and heartwarming kickoff to the holidays possible,” said Kalinowski. “There’s beautiful dance, beautiful singing and heartwarming stories from families who have been touched by Make-A-Wish. Sometimes it’s pure joy; sometimes there’s not a dry eye in the audience. It’s the gamut of emotions. We always have Make-A-Wish families speak.”

More than 40 dancers from Lititz Academy of Dance’s CoJoMotion Dance Company will perform

at “A Season for Wishes.”

The performers range in age from 11 to 18 and attend school at Warwick, Manheim Township, Conestoga Valley, Manheim Central, Hempfield, Lancaster Country Day and Lancaster County Christian School, and some are homeschooled.

“They’re my dance daughters,” said Kalinowski. “That’s what I call them. They’re beautiful souls who love what they do and love everything about this show and why they do it. They’re very talented. We have many alumni who go on to be dance majors, dance minors and on college dance teams, professional dancers and dance teachers. We want them to be properly prepared for whatever their dance goals are. We also have doctors, teachers, mommies and spouses we are just as proud of. I am very, very blessed to be close to kids I taught decades ago.”

Organizers of “A Season for Wishes” are hoping to make as much as $50,000

from the fundraiser. In its initial two decades of staging the performance, CoJoMotion Dance Company has generated more than $572,000 for the regional nonprofit.

“What all this money goes to is making wishes come true for kids and families who need them so much,” said Kalinowski. “It’s trips and all kinds of amazing wishes like being a policeman for a day or being a superhero for a day. What an honor to be part of it.”

Located at 620 Paxton Place, Lititz, Lititz Academy of Dance was founded in 2001, a few years before “A Season for Wishes” was established as a way for the organization to give back to the community. While “A Season for Wishes” has evolved into CoJoMotion’s signature event, the dance company also performs four or five other times publicly throughout the year at various venues. five days a week, depending upon the age of the patient and the condition. Many traditional models offer 40 hours of physical therapy a year - 45-minute sessions once a week for 48 weeks.

“Children with neurological challenges need repetitions and they need thousands of repetitions,” said Ebersole. “It’s that concentrated effort that makes a difference. It’s teaching the brain new paths to do things in a different way.”

Now I Can’s intensive physical therapy is designed for patients between the ages of 10 months and 18 years. Partly due to the intensive nature of the therapy, Now I Can treats between two and eight patients during any threeweek time frame.

Those patients reside in Lancaster County and the surrounding counties of Lebanon, York, Dauphin and Bucks. Thirty percent of Now I Can’s kids come from outside of Pennsylvania.

“They are children whose parents have hope for them to be able to reach

goals others have thought impossible for them,” said Ebersole. “There are very few providers who use intensive physical therapy around. We’re the only one in the state of Pennsylvania. There’s an extreme need for it. One of the biggest problems we have is that locally people don’t know that we exist. To me, that’s a really big issue. As much as we want to help the world, we really want to help local families.”

Among the 10 individuals that Now I Can employs, two practice physical therapy on a full-time basis, and two practice it on a parttime basis. The foundation accepts insurance and makes grants available to families that apply and meet eligibility requirements.

“When some of our patients come here, they can’t do certain things,” said Ebersole. “When they’re here, we hear kids say, ‘Now I can.’ We hear it from parents too. We have kids coming here needing walkers and then not having to use walkers anymore.”

Now I Can Foundation Northeast opened its doors in 2022 after borrowing some of its treatment models from Now I Can Foundation in Orem, Utah. Ebersole’s daughter Lauren, now 16, made significant progress in her experience with cerebral palsy during family visits to Now I Can in Utah when she was younger.

“This year is a pivotal year for (Now I Can) because we’ve really been growing,” said Ebersole. “Each year we’ve been growing, and we have tons of space. We’re

Christmas in the Park Is Holiday Community Tradition

Traditionally, Christmas is a chance to catch up and spend meaningful time with family members. But the season also provides an opportunity to connect with neighbors and make new friends.

In Lititz, the park board’s holiday event blurs the fine line between private celebration and public celebration even further.

“To me, I think Christmas in Lititz is about the community and the neighborhood feel,” said Kellye Martin, the Lititz Springs Park board’s event manager. “I see people downtown, and they’re meeting friends for coffee and they’re enjoying Christmas in the Park. I don’t see Lititz residents shutting themselves in their homes. Some people can’t wait to show their visitors their hometown of Lititz.”

That extended family feel will fill the air when the Lititz Springs Park board presents this year’s edition of its annual Christmas in the Park community event beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, at 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The celebration is free to attend, and both residents and nonresidents of the borough are welcome.

“It’s a very quintessential small-town vibe. It’s very Norman Rockwell,” said

Martin. “There are a lot of big, flashy tree-lighting ceremonies, but ours is more of the laid-back type from a bygone era. It’s sweet and it’s special. It’s a way to get excited for the season. We see a lot of locals and neighbors. It’s a nice way to bring the community together around the holidays.”

Mayor Tim Snyder’s ceremonial lighting of Lititz’s ornamented community Christmas tree at the park’s bandshell will serve as both the highlight and the conclusion of the 45-minute event. Christmas in the Park’s festivities will begin with a welcoming from master of ceremonies Bob D’Imperio.

“We try to keep it moving,” said Martin. “Christmas in the Park is a way to bring the community together and kick off the Christmas season. It’s very festive. It does have a religious aspect to it, and it’s a family-friendly event. We hope we created a little memory for (attendees).”

Also, from Lititz Springs Park’s bandshell will come a Christmas blessing from St. Luke’s United Church of Christ pastor Jeff Shanaberger, two songs from the Warwick High School choir that will serve as a preview for the group’s upcoming holiday program and a 15-minute performance from students at the Encore Dance Center. There will

Church Sets Concerts

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concert, “Organic Reflections: O Come, Emmanuel” on First Friday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Larry Hershey and trumpeter Doug Albert. The concert will include “Sleepers, Awake!” by Johann Sebastian Bach and the well-known “Ave Maria” by Franz Schubert. The audience will join in “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and the program will conclude with Christina Harmon’s arrangement of “Joy to the World,” highlighting Albert playing the piccolo trumpet. The concert is free and

also be a candle-lighting service and a community caroling session featuring the singing of “Silent Night.”

“My favorite part is caroling with the Christmas tree lighting,” said Martin. “Everyone is singing songs they know so well. I remember that moment even coming there as a kid. Now I enjoy it as an adult. It’s been with me my whole life.”

More than 2,000 individuals are expected to attend Christmas in the Park. In an attempt to cover the costs of the event, a freewill offering will be accepted.

“The park is just such an identifiable part of Lititz as a town,” said Martin. “It’s so accessible; everyone knows where it is. The trees look so great in every season. You’ve got the natural water feature running through it, and it can be used for so many things. It’s a great space for the community to

come together.”

In 1994, Christmas in the Park was established at Lititz Springs Park, land once owned by the Moravian Church. The other annual community event that the Lititz Springs Park board conducts - the Fourth of July Celebration - serves as a fundraiser for maintenance and improvements of the park’s grounds.

Overseen by a board of 17 trustees, Lititz Springs Park employs four workers. The park receives tens of thousands of visitors each year.

“To me, Christmas is all about hope,” said Martin. “Hopefully, people can come to this place and experience peace. Hopefully, people can experience this event, and we hope it’s positive and enjoyable. I love being a part of it.”

Local Author Slates Book Launch

Marichelle Roque-Lutz, a resident of New Holland, has written “The House by the Beach.” The novel, based on Roque-Lutz’s family on her mother’s side, mixes fiction and truth and is set in Cuyo, an island in the Philippines.

The story spans four generations, starting in the final years of Spanish rule and ending in the 1960s, and is a portrait of a family’s love, sacrifice, and enduring struggle to make sense of its past. At the center of the story is Carlos, a man whose actions

leave a trail of pain, misery, and consequences that his family has to carry. Lupe, a daughter who immigrates to the U.S., endeavors to write her family’s story and deal with her father’s complexities as she builds a new life in Manheim Township.

“The House by the Beach” is on its second printing. People may purchase copies of the book during a book launch and signing at Community Mennonite Church, 325 W. Orange St., Lancaster, on First Friday, Dec. 5, starting at 7 p.m.

the congregation. People wear festive clothing, and everyone is very upbeat. Sometimes, Santa Claus makes a surprise visit. Rumor has it that he will be there this year.”

In addition to Bob’s special homemade and handmade treats, the Cookie Walk will feature sand tarts, sugar cookies, gingerbread, jacked-up chocolate chip cookies, snickerdoodles and chocolate-covered Oreo Mint cookies, as well as a table full of gluten-free offerings. The cookies are displayed on trays and arranged on tables set up in rectangles to assure

Wheatland Chorale To Present Christmas Concert

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will present “A Rose in Winter” by the Wheatland Chorale on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m.

“A Rose in Winter” blends traditional carols and works by composers from a variety of styles and backgrounds with fresh arrangements of familiar carols like “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Mary, Did You Know?”

and “What Child Is This?”

Tickets may be purchased at the concert venue with cash, check or credit card. There will be separate prices for adults and students with ID. Children under age 12 will be admitted free of charge. Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.wheatland chorale.org.

Those with questions may email Wheatland .Chorale@gmail.com.

a good flow and maximum cookie visibility.

Careful confectionary consideration is advised.

“The ones that are brightly decorated go first,” said Patti. “(The Cookie Walk) is a lot of talking and a lot of merriment. There’s a lot of energy in the room. There’s recorded holiday music playing. People are in a great mood. It’s just a buzz.”

Nearly 120 dozen cookies will be made available, donated by more than 100 St. Peter’s congregation bakers, their family members and friends. Members of local Scouting America Troop 84 will be on hand helping out where they can.

“We ask members of

our congregation to bake a double batch of their best holiday cookies,” said Patti. “Some older people in the community don’t want to bake themselves. People use them as gifts. Everyone has their reason for coming. It’s an event that’s worthwhile, and people can get some great Christmas spirit from attending.”

Organizers of St. Peter’s Cookie Walk are hoping to raise $4,000 through the event. The proceeds will be wired to Busoka Lutheran Church and will be used to directly support and educate about 60 orphans currently being looked after by the Tanzanian church.

“(Busoka church officials)

want to be able to educate (the orphans) and give them a start,” said Patti. “There’s a cost for orphans to go to school. It might go toward that, or it might go toward shoes or clothing. We’re very close to that church.”

Through an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America initiative, St. Peter’s and Busoka became companion congregations in 2006. Not long after, the Cookie Walk was conceived as a way to raise funds for Busoka’s mission, and since then the cookie extravaganza has raised more than a total of $75,000 for the orphans.

That’s a lot of dough!

“It’s neat to see the grassroots growth of it; it’s solidified in the community, and now there’s more awareness,” said Patti. “People want to be a part of it. It takes a village. It takes a village (in Tanzania), and while they’re taking care of orphans there, it takes a village for what we do. We have the community’s support.”
