“I am passionate about food justice issues and access to food,” said Jennifer Lancaster, who, along with Elspeth Naramore and several other volunteers, coordinates the Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church Food Pantry. “The food pantry addresses a lot of those issues.” The pantry is open on the third Friday of each month in the gym at the church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster, from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m.
To turn the gymnasium into a choice pantry, up to 15 volunteers arrive at the church by 2 p.m. to begin filling half the area with about seven rolling shelves holding a variety of sorted and labeled food items, including cereal and canned foods. Several tables are set up for fresh food, and two freezer units placed near a service window are utilized as well. Donated shopping carts are brought in for the 25 or more families that shop when the pantry is open. See Neighbors pg 8

Church To Host Handbell Ensemble, Cookie Walk
CoJoMotion from pg 1 More than 40 dancers will take part in the 17th annual “A Season for Wishes” presentation, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5 p.m. This traditional holiday show benefits Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley. Along with a variety of musical numbers performed by members of the CoJoMotion Dance Company, the show will feature local singers and instrumentalists. Prizes, giveaways, and opportunities to donate will be part of the event. Styles for the 26 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern, lyrical, and musical theater. Kalinowski was able to bring back Rockette-style pieces, which were not possible last year, for songs such as “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Cool Yule,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas
Tree,” and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Pieces inspired by “The Nutcracker” will include “Waltz of the Flowers” and “Arabian Dance.” Lyrical pieces will be set to hymns such as “O Holy Night” and “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and fun dances will be performed to well-known tunes of the season, such as “Santa Baby,” “My Only Wish (This Year),” and music from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Past shows have raised more than $30,000. “Cumulatively, over the past 16 years, we’ve raised over $380,000,” said Kalinowski, who is hoping to reach a milestone with this show, noting that “$400,000 would be pretty wonderful.” Tickets may be purchased by emailing Cojo_ Wishes@LititzAcademyof Dance.com. The Hershey Handbell Ensemble
St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, invites the community to a performance by the Hershey Handbell Ensemble on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 4 p.m. as part of the church’s Musical Arts Series. The Hershey Handbell Ensemble was formed in 2004 to fulfill the need for an auditioned community ensemble composed of people able to play advanced literature and interested in advancing the art of handbell ringing through education and performance. The 15-member group, directed

LBC Plans “A Messiah Mosaic” Lancaster Bible College (LBC) has set its 2021 Christmas concert, titled “A Messiah Mosaic,” for Friday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2 and 7 p.m. in Good Shepherd Chapel on the LBC campus, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The Christmas concert is an LBC holiday tradition. This year’s in-person concert will feature LBC’s vocal,
family service outdoors; 3:30 and 5 p.m. family services indoors; and 7:30 and 9 p.m. traditional services indoors. Additionally, the church’s Tanzania Mission Committee invites the community to its 14th Cookie Walk on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. until noon or until cookies are sold out. Woodcrest Retreat from pg 1 Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in specific scenes. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ child in the manger. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. Fox noted that about 3,000 people attended the 2020 event. Because Journey to Bethlehem is held mostly out-

“At the beginning of the show, Mary has learned she is pregnant, and she is wrestling with that and the social consequences of that,” said Fox of the new scene. He explained Joseph and Mary will be together and discuss the ramifications of Mary’s role as an unwed mother in first-century Palestine. “We want the audience to feel the emotions that Mary and Joseph would have felt,” said Fox. Now in its 11th year, Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the time they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to the arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. Studio To Display Art Holiday Dinner Giveaway Exhibits
Local artist Karen Chandler will bring her newest collection of work, “Fluid Transformations,” to Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, in December. Chandler holds a Bachelor of Arts in art and has completed postgraduate work in art education at Millersville University. She studied commercial design and photography for two years at Kutztown University and studied sculpture under Cuban sculptor Ramon Lago at the Wyomissing School of Fine Art. She completed certification programs in digital design, print, and web at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. She also studied clay printing with the late Mitch Lyons. She was an art instructor for individuals
with disabilities, and currently she works privately at her home studio in Millersville. Additionally, Mulberry Art Studios has announced the continuation of B. Emerson’s exhibit “DARK GRAIN,” which debuted at the gallery on Nov. 5. The exhibit will continue until the end of December. The 35th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 18. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. Students Elected To Organization St. John Neumann Catholic School (SJNCS) recently elected its Student Service Council representatives and officers for the 2021-22 school year. The Student Service Council is an organization of elected students whose purpose is to promote, through its activities, the ideals and values of Catholic education. The council deter-
mines which projects and activities will best encourage scholarship, citizenship, leadership, good human relations and cultural values. The council is composed of eight class representatives two students from each class in grades four through six and one each from grades seven and eight - and five officers elected from seventh
and eighth grades. This year’s officers are Ava Thurmond, president; Cristian Evans, vice president; Natalie Cellucci, secretary; Aidan Nguyen, treasurer; and Gianna Ostroski, public relations. The representatives are Christina Cropper, Mateo Curry, Madeline Keyes, Finn Milligan, Alice Reigner, Caitlyn Reynolds, Gavin Schoenberger, and Ethan Zoll. The council provides its
members with an educational opportunity to learn about democracy, problem solving and service. It is meant to provide the students at SJNCS with opportunities to learn and to grow into responsible individuals following the teachings of Jesus Christ. It represents the students of SJNCS and, through its activities, seeks to exemplify the best traditions of the school.
Museum Plans Lunch And Learn The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum will host its monthly lunchtime webinar titled “Lunch and Learn: Death and COVID-19, a Coroner’s Perspective” presented by Dr. Steven Diamantoni, Lancaster County coroner, on Monday, Dec. 6, at noon. In his lecture, Diamantoni will discuss causes of death from the COVID virus and the role of the coroner’s office in determining those causes and manners of death as well as the
responsibilities and jurisdiction of the coroner’s office with regard to the pandemic. The Lancaster City Alliance and City of Lancaster have teamed up to better support members of the community in crisis through the work of an outreach specialist. Funded by the city, the new outreach specialist will work under the umbrella of the Lancaster City Alliance Ambassador program. Sarita Rivera, outreach specialist at Lancaster City Alliance, will assist individuals in the city experiencing homelessness, addiction, or
mental illness. She will connect people with the support and services they need to safely leave the streets. The need for a cityfocused outreach specialist was a priority for the mayor’s office and was refined through stakeholder meetings with county government, Tenfold, LancCo My Home, and the Lancaster City Alliance. World War I Exhibit Opens The North Museum, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, opened its doors to a new traveling exhibit on Nov. 11. The “WW1 America” exhibit invites audiences to gain a nuanced understanding of World War I as a transformational event in American history; a compressed and convulsive time of social, economic, and political change; and a lens through which to understand what it means to be modern. “WW1 America” explores stories of a transformational and divisive era for a broad, multi-generational audience. The exhibition is visually dynamic, with large-
scale photographs, moving images, multimedia environments, and re-created settings such as a music shop and grocery store. It is also a socially interactive forum, with stories and many period artifacts supported by authentic voices expressing competing views. From the realities of war to the delights of popular culture, “WW1 America” offers visitors a view of the many dimensions of this period, as well as an entry point into thinking about and making sense of the current time. This year’s designated item to create is a holiday wreath. “The person who makes (a wreath for the competition) creates their interpretation of a metal holiday wreath,” said Shultz. “They are all making the same thing, but there are so many variations on how people approach making that item.” According to Shultz, interest in the craft of blacksmithing has grown recently. “Blacksmithing ... has seen a great resurgence in the last four years, because of television reality shows like ‘Forged in Fire,’” he said. “One of the best ways to get into the hobby is to join an association like PABA, where you can go to meetings and see demonstrations about how to work with metal,” he noted. “The (attendees) will be rubbing elbows and talking with ex perienced (crafters).” Shultz added that the organization has a lending library that features several hundred volumes of books, DVDs, and periodicals. “What’s really interesting with this craft is that it combines the skills of working with different metals, mainly steel, and the creative artistic design elements that people incorporate into the item,” said Luke Shultz, member of the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association (PABA). “ We call ourselves artist blacksmiths, as opposed to the traditional (image) of a blacksmith from 200 years ago.” The PABA gallery meeting will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Paradise Community Center, 6 Londonvale Road, Paradise, located just off Route 30. The group is part of the Artists Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA), one of two chapters in Pennsylvania. “ We cover eastern Pennsylvania, with some members from surrounding states,” said Shultz of the 20-year-old
group, which boasts about 200 members who have a general interest in working with metal. “(That interest is) mainly blacksmithing or forging, but we also have some people who do tinsmithing, silversmithing, general fabricating, and other disciplines within the umbrella of metalwork,” Shultz said. The group holds regular meetings, all of which are open to the public. Meetings are often held at a member’s shop or historic blacksmith shop and include demonstrations of certain skills or projects. The gallery meeting, which is always held in December, is traditionally located in Paradise. “We call it our gallery meeting because it is a little different than the rest of our meetings,” said Shultz, who noted that the meeting is a showcase of metal-related items. “Members bring in examples of what they worked on throughout the year or collections they might have of antique tools

Manheim Township School District December MT School Board Organization/ Work Session and Voting Meeting
MT School Board Saturday Morning Conversations
The December School Board Reorganization and Work Session will be held on Monday, December 6, 2021, and the School Board Voting Meeting on Thursday, December 16, 2021.
The MT community is invited to attend the Saturday, December 11th Manheim Township School Board Community Conversations at the District Office from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. Health and safety mitigation efforts will be put in place for all Community Conversations. These drop-in sessions are informal, informational, and conversational in nature to provide the community the opportunity to meet representatives from the MT School Board and discuss important topics related to MT schools. The drop-ins are held on the Saturday morning between the School Board Work Sessions and Board Action Meetings.
January MT School Board Work Session and Voting Meeting The January School Board Work Session will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2021, and the School Board Voting Meeting on Thursday, January 20, 2021.

On November 9th, Manheim Township High School honored this year’s National Merit recipients at the annual National Merit Scholarship Dessert Reception! The following students were recognized:

The reception provided an opportunity to recognize those students who have been identified by the College Board as COMMENDED or SEMIFINALISTS as demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Qualifying Test – most often referred to as the PSAT/NMSQT. In addition to recognizing students and their families for this accomplishment, the students were also asked to select one teacher who they believed had a significant impact on their education. Congratulations to all of our National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists and Commended students, and to the teachers who have inspired them.
