Church Craft Bazaar To Return BY ANN MEAD ASH
The roots of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Craft Bazaar go back to about 2013 when Sister Dottie Almoney, director of education and outreach for St. Peter’s, suggested to Kim Sterner that Sterner and her mother, Movita Groff, should oversee a craft show at the church. Almoney knew that the pair made crafts, including jewelry, cards, and scarves adorned with pins. The timing was not right, but by 2017, Sterner’s children had completed their education, and she was ready to give the undertaking a go. In 2018, the church

Scouts Garner Bronze Award he Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 71348 in Manheim Township, all students at Landis Run Intermediate School, have earned their Bronze Award. The girls will receive their pins at a special tea and awards ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18. “The Bronze Service Award was a big project,” said troop leader Michelle McGlauflin. “It’(requires) 20 hours per girl of community service, and it had to fit in (a specific) category.” McGlauflin said the girls chose to focus on the award category of “Making the World a Better Place,” and she explained that the

project had to continue to give, so the girls could not just spend 20 hours working in a soup kitchen. Troop members knew of Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC), an animal rehabilitation organization located in Washington Boro, from a presentation they had seen at a vacation bible school, and they decided to complete a project there, tackling the requirements from a number of angles. According to McGlauflin, the effort began with a tour of Raven Ridge. Working with an RRWC representative, the girls chose an area where they could create a peaceful and mask-free resting area for volunteers. The completed area included
painted rocks, a bench, and hanging flowerpots. “We collected rocks at Raven Ridge, so we wouldn’t bring in outside bacteria,” said McGlauflin, who reported that 100 rocks were collected; washed; painted with animals, stars, and positive messages; and sealed. The group also built birdhouses and made hanging planters out of clay, working to discover the right amount of clay to be sure the planters were neither too light nor too heavy. The troop members also built a bench from a kit with minimal adult help. In addition to creating the resting space, the troop members asked neighborhood families to collect newspaper for a month to give to
RRWC and then encouraged the families to continue donating newspaper there when the collection ended. The troop funded the work it did at RRWC by selling 4,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies in local stores and restaurants in the spring. Troop 71348 members who completed the project and will receive the award are Jorja and Rayna Weaver, Jayla and Jenna Hector, Chloe Eshleman, Mirranda McGlauflin, and Emma Wilczynski. The ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course, conducted by Penn State Extension, will be held in Room 149 at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The course will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Wednesday, Dec. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. An exam will begin at 11 a.m. on Dec. 15. These in-person trainings, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help participants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving food. Participants will also learn proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a

Penn State will continue to require individuals to wear masks inside university buildings at all times. The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, exam, answer sheet, and learning materials. Additional vendors will offer crocheted towels, wooden ornaments and other woodcrafts, surprise balls made of paper with treats inside, floral arrangements, wreaths, signs, pottery, and tissue holders. An author will have her book on display. The church youth group will make refreshments to sell to help raise funds to attend a youth conference. The Manheim Township Lions Club will be selling individually wrapped desserts. Groff explained that the charge to vendors is kept low, and rental funds are used only to cover bazaar expenses. “It’s a community outreach,” explained Sterner. This biennial school tradition is presented by the secondary school student theater, for students in seventh through 12th grades. to enjoying it and interacting with the kids this year and go all out,” said Osborne. “My volunteers loved it last year. Before I reached out to them this year, they asked, ‘When are you doing Shop With a Cop again?’” Last year, about 16 children participated in SWAC. Osborne hopes to double that number this year. Five years ago, the Middletown Police Department in Langhorne, Pennsylvania started the Shop With a Cop (SWAC) program with the mission of brightening the holiday season for children and families in need. Since its inception, the program has been implemented by other agencies in Pennsylvania. Among them is Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster, which is located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Troop J - Lancaster covers 19 townships and two boroughs in the county. Officers are also stationed full time at Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts. Troop J - Lancaster’s second annual SWAC event will take place at Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 4. Children should arrive at the fire station by 9:30 a.m. They will then be paired with a law enforcement officer and receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s. Children and officers will be bused to the Kohl’s Lincoln Highway East location, where they will shop for Christmas presents for children’s family members. Then, everyone will return to the fire station to eat a bagged lunch and wrap the presents. Prima Theatre, 941 Wheatland Ave., Suite A, Lancaster, will present a nontraditional holiday show on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. from Friday, Dec. 3, through Saturday, Dec. 18. The brand-new show, “On the Naughty List,” features two singers and a speaker
supported by projections, special effects, and set elements from Atomic Design of Rock Lititz. Live vocal performances include Donovan Hoffer, who has been featured on “America’s Got Talent,” and Asia Littlejohn, a Lincoln Center soloist. Both recently were featured in Prima’s production of “Queen/Journey.” The upcoming show includes contemporary pop and holiday songs, plus a unique digital musical appearance by the Bright Side Baptist Church choir. The speaker will be April Mae Davis, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Master of Fine Arts in acting. The show’s premise is that people on “the naughty list” change the world. Mitch Nugent wrote the script in collaboration with Sara Dodson, a Prima staff member, and internationally produced playwright Emily Goodson. The show includes mild adult language and a progressive perspective on a biblical character. Masks are required for audiences, and strong safety and sanitization protocols are in place at the theater. Attendees will be primarily seated at private tables.
