The Group That Planted Trees Riparian Buffer Month Celebrated At Overlook BY ANN MEAD ASH
“It’s hard to think of a single action that would be more impactful across a single issue than planting native trees and shrubs beside a stream,” said Lamonte Garber, watershed restoration coordinator with Stroud Water Research Center of Avondale. “We need more trees in Lancaster County.” Garber was addressing a group of people representing a number of organizations who had gathered in Manheim Township’s Overlook Park, 605 Granite Run Drive, on Oct. 28 in celebration of Riparian Buffer Month, which was held during October. A riparian buffer is a vegetated area near a stream, which helps shade and partially protect the stream. “This is a riparian forested buffer,” noted Garber, referring to the stream running through the park and the vegetation planted around it. “Manheim Township opened up this high visi-
bility, high-foot-traffic site to be a long-term buffer demonstration area. We will bring people here to show them what these buffers do.” The group of organizations hoped to plant about 800 trees and shrubs on more than five acres in the park. “When we plant a tree near a stream, we get more benefits,” explained Garber. “(Trees) are good for cooling our cities and giving off oxygen, (but) when you (plant) beside a stream, the tree is shading the stream to keep the temperatures down in the summertime, and dropping leaves into a stream feeds aquatic insects that eat leaves.” Garber noted that the insects feeding in the stream are then eaten by turtles, fish, and frogs. In addition, the tree roots stabilize the stream bed. Garber noted that the planting consisted of restoring native plants to the area. “We want to get as many trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and perennial natives planted over See Overlook pg 7

Julie Baum, supporter relations director of Align Life Ministries, is clear on how the organization, which first opened in 1985 as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services, has come to be called Align Life Ministries. “The short answer is, ‘It was God’s idea,’” she said. life springs forth.” She also noted that nearly a decade ago, the organization felt called to partner with other Christ-centered, life-affirming groups and began working with a ministry in Philadelphia, offering information on partnering with churches, engaging with donors, and even helping to obtain an ultrasound bus for one organization. But partnerships were only part of the story. The ministry also offers equipping resources to other organizations. “ We were meeting with high school students and teaching them ways to walk in sexual integrity,” said Baum, referring to a curriculum for teens and young adults called “Sexuality by Design.” The ministry also offers leadership help in the form of president Lisa Hosler’s book called “The Unexhausted Leader.” “(Our reach) extended beyond the Susquehanna Valley, so the name Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services wasn’t going to work much longer,” said Baum.
The organization’s pregnancy services centers, located in Lebanon, Lancaster, Ephrata, and Columbia, became Align Pregnancy Services. Becca Keretzman, director of the Ephrata location, explained that each center offers a variety of services, such as pregnancy tests, prenatal and parenting classes, a baby boutique, and other services, including ultrasounds at some locations. Keretzman described the Earn While You Learn program that rewards parentsto-be with Care Cash that can be used in the baby boutique. Those who attend all 15 weeks of classes may choose from large items such as a crib. She added that classes are tailored to clients’ needs and may include videos, information on infant care, and prayer. The Gospel is proclaimed in words throughout the program. Parenting classes offer material for parents of children from birth through age 12. Clients may be served in person or virtually. “Ephrata is unique in that
there is not another center close by,” said Keretzman, who noted as many as 20 clients a week visit the center. “ We see people from the other side of New Holland,” she said. Baum noted that services are also available for those who have terminated a pregnancy. “We have Bible studies and one-on-one conversations,” she noted. During 2020, the ministry became acquainted with more than 500 new area families
to promote birding, conservation, or nature study in general. A maximum of $400 per award will be given for activities and projects that meet the criteria. Celebrating 10 Years Of Extraordinary Giving BY COURTNEY MENGEL
As of Nov. 2, the top five requests for 2-1-1 assistance in Pennsylvania were housing and shelter at 42.1%, utilities at 17%, health care and COVID-19 assistance at 10%, employment and income 8.7%, and food at 6.2%. Hundreds of nonprofit organizations exist in Lancaster County specifically to meet these and other needs. For instance, Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Tenfold - an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020 offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County residents. The list goes on and on. On one day, 24 hours, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) provides a platform in which people can donate money to participating nonprofits serving this region. This platform, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), is celebrating its 10th
year in 2021. Over $60 million has been raised for local organizations by more than 40,000 donors since LCCF started the ExtraGive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s ExtraGive brought in about $13.4 million. This year’s ExtraGive is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extra give.org. All participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be a registered 501(c)(3) organization in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. From 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 19, LCCF will host the ExtraGive Fest in Penn Square as it counts down the final hours of the event. Live music will be provided by DJ Salinger; Sir Dominique Jordan, The Prolific One; Adrian Garcia; and Mama Tried. There will be a local beer garden from Springhouse Brewing Company as well as local
food pop-ups from East King Street businesses, such as Tellus360, Blazin’ J’s, and New Holland Coffee Co. All are welcome to attend. Unvaccinated guests will be encouraged to wear masks. “The day is all about giving - giving back to the nonprofits that serve our county,” said Cutler.

Bridge Of Hope Posts Staff Changes, Award Bridge of Hope Lancaster recently announced that Audrey Metzler has accepted the new position of director of church engagement and Talita Hall has been named program director. Bridge of Hope Lancaster works to end family homelessness for single mothers and their children through a comprehensive program of professional case management and informal social supports, called Neighboring. Neighboring volunteers from local Christian churches seek to be a source of healing and hope by providing tangible support and networking and by offering encouragement. Families receiving Bridge of Hope services work with professional case management staff to achieve safe and sustainable housing, financial stability, and whole family strength and resiliency. Feeding Pennsylvania is teaming up with PA Eats and Breweries in PA this November for a monthlong fundraising campaign, Hops for Hunger, to raise funds for Pennsylvanians facing hunger. As part of the inaugural Hops for Hunger program, people are invited to visit participating breweries during the month of November, and the businesses will donate proceeds from a beer of their choice, host special events, and more to engage their guests about the issue of hunger in Pennsylvania. Events will be announced and updated at www.feed ingpa.org/hopsforhunger. Local participants include The Vegetable Hunter, Harrisburg; Lovedrafts Brewing Co., Mechanicsburg; Pour Man’s Brewing Company,
Ephrata; Moo-Duck Brewery, Elizabethtown; Our Town Brewery, Lancaster; Wo l f B r e w i n g C o . , Mechanicsburg; and Desperate Times Brewery, Carlisle. The concept of the campaign came from Feeding Pennsylvania’s community manager, Corinne Foster, who doubles as a Central Pennsylvania food blogger, Fosterthefoodie. Through her food blog, Foster incorporates different ways of partnering with local restaurants on promotions that encourage individuals to support local restaurants while raising awareness and funds to support antihunger efforts. This oncelocalized approach eventually sparked an idea to take these efforts statewide. PA Eats joined the campaign because of its mission of showcasing Pennsylvania food culture. Breweries in Pennsylvania also played a key role in outreach for the inaugural event, with a combined total of more than 60,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram. The plan is to use these platforms to share upcoming events, specials, and promotions for the Hops for Hunger campaign to help promote this year’s participating breweries. SWAN from pg 1 The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the students were “lost in learning.” “They had an engaging conversation. It was stimulating, instructive, and inspiring,” said Vuolo. “Experiencing music live has an impact emotionally. It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community. SWAN is a free one-hour music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through several SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. Since the children play ukuleles, it was natural for them to compare their instruments with the musicians’ violins. “(The students) saw that the violin has two holes to let the sound out and that both (instruments) have bridges, but they are different in
shape and size. Both have four strings and a similarshaped body,” shared Vuolo. “They were describing the instruments with good adjectives, and they created good conversation.” The visiting musicians then gave the students an opportunity to play with them. “One of the most magical moments was when the symphony musicians had our children start plucking two notes repeatedly (on their ukuleles), and then the musicians started to play a folk dance,” said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.” Vuolo is especially looking forward to a return visit by Mazzocchi and Zubadi. “(LSO) will be sending the same musicians to the same classes multiple times throughout the year,” she explained, “so the school children will be able to create a relationship with them.” On Friday, Nov. 19, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, which is the the largest per-capita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. Free Thanksgiving Meals Available Frisco’s Chicken will give away 87 meals to people in need on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The number 87 was chosen because this is the number of meals the business sold on its first day of business on Oct. 29, 2020. Dementia Friendly Lancaster Names Coordinator Steve Klotz was recently named coordinator of Dementia Friendly Lancaster County. Klotz previously worked as a chaplain and then a staff trainer in a regional retirement system. He brings many years of experience in serving people with dementia through Validation, a method for dementia communication and relationship building. Klotz is one of three Certified Validation Master Teachers in the United States. Dementia Friendly Lancaster’s existing programs
include monthly Memory Cafes, Care Partner Respite Saturdays, and Dementia Friendly Business Training. Klotz said he would like to extend services to areas of Lancaster County that the organization does not currently serve. VisionCorps Posts Programs VisionCorps offers free programs, both in-person and virtual, to organizations and employers about its services. The programs, which can be individualized based on the needs of the group, include information on vision problems, living with low vision and employing people with low vision, as well as tips for living independently with blindness or low vision. VisionCorps provides programs and services to clients in Lancaster, Adams, Chester, Lebanon, and York counties. VisionCorps staff members can come to meetings and pre-

Grant Will Help Families In Need The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced the receipt of a grant from Conagra Brands Foundation to help provide food to children and families in need. This grant will enable the CPFB to increase its capacity to distribute food to its partners through the purchase of new pallet jacks and other essential warehouse equipment. The gift will also help the food bank expand its equity, diversity, and inclusion programs to address inequities of hunger in communities of color. Conagra Brands Foundation has partnered with Feeding America, a domestic hunger relief organization, to help address hunger in communities where Conagra employees live and work.
Conagra locations in central Pennsylvania have partnered with the food bank for more than 20 years, with employees actively volunteering their time and supporting various events and initiatives such as Summer Feeding Programs for youths. New this year, Conagra Brands Foundation made an additional funding commitment to enable food banks to address racial and equity disparities in local communities. The CPFB is committed to addressing these inequities in the months and years ahead and is working with its partners to make sure these communities have access to nutritious food. More than two years ago, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales went to sleep one night and dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,” said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. She brought the ballet to Connie Dienner, director at Cavod Academy of the Arts. The result was “Wonder,” an original Christmas ballet, which was performed for the first time in Cavod Theatre in 2019. This year, “ Wonder” will run on Fridays, Dec. 3 and 10, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, Dec. 4 and 11, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Dec. 5 and 12, at 4 p.m. “Wonder” is the story of Gracie, played by Sierra Hurst, and Nick, played by Lincoln Everett, two orphaned children who are searching for the wonder of the holiday season. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights - Twinkle, played by Sarah Blatt; Flicker, played by Annika Blake; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder,” the children visit the Toy Shop, the Christmas
Tree Village, and a cathedral. Through their adventure, they learn that the wonder of the holiday season comes from love and from being loved. Morales made a few changes in this year’s production. “We will have an icicle battle scene,” she said. “I really wanted to focus on the juxtaposition between the lights, who are there to show what wonder is, and the icicles that represent staying in the mundane,” she said, explaining why she decided to expand the conflict between the two entities. “It almost affects the whole story line, but it doesn’t, and that’s exciting.” Morales also added some marshmallow dancers to the
Sweet Shop in Act 2. “That dance is super cute, and those girls are really adorable,” she said. The Sweet Shop, which was added to the 2020 show, features a baker and little gingerbreads played by 5-to 7-year-olds, along with hot chocolate and gumdrops and peppermints. Other scenes include a snow blizzard and a sequence with choir dancers. Morales noted that the concession stand will be open during performances, and attendees will have opportunities to purchase flowers to give to cast members. Helpers Needed To Wrap Presents Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS), the UDS gift wrap booth will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The booth will operate daily in the former Sears wing of Park City Center from Black Friday, Nov. 26, through Christmas Eve, Friday, Dec. 24. Booth hours are from noon to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Fulton Theatre Posts Magical Musicals The Fulton Theatre’s lineup for this fall includes Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” as well as “Snow White.” Fulton Theatre performs at the Fulton Opera House, 12 N.
