A Message Of Hope MTPA To Perform “Kodachrome BY ANN MEAD ASH
ristel Kennedy, director of the Manheim Township Performing Arts (MTPA) fall production of “Kodachrome,” describes the play as “similar to ‘Our Town’ and to ‘Almost, Maine.’” “It has a lot of vignettes of people (interacting). It keeps moving around the town,” said Kennedy. “Kodachrome,” by Adam Szymkowicz, will be presented at Manheim Township High School, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, on Thursday, Nov. 18; Friday, Nov.19; and Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. each evening. Audience members will be required to wear masks. Kennedy explained that the play is narrated by a photographer, played by Kristen Bennett, who has died but has not yet transitioned to the next life. With her camera, she records the townspeople as they live and love. Only the gravedigger, played by Jack Turner, can see the photographer, and as he interacts with her, he encourages her to

move beyond her past life in the town. Other members of the small cast are Eva Anderson as the librarian, Abby Kimani as the florist, Evan Castner as the hardware store owner and policeman, Grace Kline as the mystery novelist, and Jayden Gonzalez as the history professor and perfume maker. Maggie Spealman will play a young woman, and Lily Reaser will play a waitress. Amadeus Cigan will appear as Marjory and EMT 2, and Maya Tate will play a friend and EMT 1. The stage manager is Alex Atencio, and the assistant stage managers are Kayla Raab and Gabbie Reedy. Kennedy said that she chose the play because it deals with subjects and emotions that are relatable. “There are moments that are very human … where characters talk about loss and love. (The play) has very poignant moments,” she noted. To enhance one scene where two characters remember their prom night, a choreographer was engaged to create a dance for the pair.

Sandra Jones and Paul Zenone’s first date in May of 2019 was a little unusual. “Our first date was a community meal,” recalled Zenone. The second date was even more unusual. “Our second date was a hike where we saw people living in homeless camps and under bridges,” he noted.

Orchestra Will Perform “reVision” The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), together with music director finalist Delta David Gier, will present “reVision.” Performances will take place on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 13, at 3 and 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster. A free lecture will begin one hour before each performance. The program expresses what can happen when the familiar is reimagined and when one’s focus is resharp-
ened. The audience will be treated to “Sinfonietta for Strings” and “Sinfonía No. 4” by Puerto Rican-born composer Roberto Sierra. Sierra infuses traditional symphonic forms with Latin color, rhythm, and imagination. These works will be paired with Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony. Faith UMC Plans Spaghetti Dinner Faith United Methodist Church (UMC), 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will hold a drive-through spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. The entrance to the church’s driveway is on Koser Road. From that beginning, Jones and Zenone have created Providing Hope, an organization that provides clothing and food to the homeless in the Reading area on a weekly basis, with the help of about 20 volunteers. Zenone and Jones first connected when Jones, who grew up in the Donegal area, saw an ad on Craigslist seeking donations for homeless people in Reading. She reached out to Zenone, who had placed the ad, and the pair began serving the homeless community together. On Sept. 17, 2020, Providing Hope celebrated its second anniversary as an organization. The pair now works with several Lancaster County food stores, including the Grocery Outlet Bargain Markets. Their first partnership was with Justin and Ellie Maenner, who own the Spring Valley Road store, purchasing items at a deep discount. They have also partnered with Heather and Mike Cherasaro, who own the Lincoln Highway East store, and the couple works with the Manheim Grocery Outlet store. “They reached out to us when we opened the store in April 2020,” recalled Heather, who noted that an oatmeal manufacturer had printed the wrong expiration date on its product. “It wasn’t expired, but we weren’t going to sell it, so we said, ‘Here
you go,’” said Heather. Providing Hope holds a food distribution on Court Street in Reading each Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. The giveaway includes 15 food items. On Mondays, Providing Hope makes a snack bag run through the city with regular stops. To help homeless Reading residents to know where they can shower or do laundry, Providing Hope has created a flyer in English and Spanish that lists days of the week and locations of services. Now, the couple hopes to provide similar help in Lancaster County, where Jones, who works with autistic children, is already storing some of the clothing bank items she has collected. “At our house we have bins for male and female winter and summer shirts from small to extra-large,” said Jones. “I store plus sizes and kids’ clothes at my parents’ house in Lancaster.” Zenone, who owns a flooring business, added that Reading-area nonprofits now reach out to Providing Hope when they need clothing for a client. Both Jones and Zenone welcome donations of food and clothing and volunteers. Educators can get free Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) kits from the U.S. Air Force through their local Civil Air Patrol squadron. Educators can be public, private, or homeschool workers as well as advisers in community educational groups. The kits, valued at from $50 to $500, can be ordered by Aerospace Education (AE) members who, after an initial fee, pay no annual membership ever. The Amish Farm and House’s Amish Christmas Cookie Tour will return this season, with tours on Fridays and Saturdays from Friday, Nov. 19, to Saturday, Dec. 18. Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School has planned a concert and an open house. The concert will take place on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Chapel on LBC’s Lancaster campus, 901 Eden Road. The LBC orchestra, consisting of students and professional mentors, will perform Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 8, the second movement of which features a unique ensemble of three violas, cello and bass, as well as Sibelius’ “Romance in C Major for Strings.” The LBC Orchestra is conducted by Peter Kenote, violist with the New York Philharmonic and LBC | Capital Adjunct professor. The farce, set in Brooklyn, N.Y., centers on the Brewster family, whose members, descended from the Mayflower settlers, are now decidedly off-kilter, some of them homicidal. Mortimer Brewster, played by Chris Cavender, is a drama critic who wants to honor his promise to marry Elaine Harper, played by Katie Lyle. Among the Brewster family members are Abby Brewster, played by Alexis Lenhart, and Martha Brewster, played by Lucy Schwartz, who poison lonely old men as a misguided act of compassion. Other cast members are Samuel Cassidy, who plays Teddy Brewster; Travis Cleveland as Jonathan Brewster; Lydia Fuhrman as Dr. Einstein; Murphy McCormick as Harper and Rooney; and Molly Schaeffer as Officer O’Hara. Julie Leonard will play Officer Brophy. Mihyanni Hernandez will play Officer Klein, and Joseph Martin will take the parts of Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Witherspoon. Both Schwartz and Lenhart are relishing playing characters who are not who they
seem to be. “They are two cute, really sweet old ladies,” said Lenhart. “You don’t expect them to be killers, and they don’t see themselves as murderers.” “As they play goes on, you see that they aren’t really what you expect them to be,” added Schwartz. “They are traditional. They love to cook and tidy the house. It’s very misleading.” “You have to get into their heads and understand why they murder,” added Lenhart. “They do it as a charity.” Reynolds is pleased with the cast members’ progress in rehearsing the farce. “ We have really talented students,” she said. “The kids are doing amazing. They are so dedicated. (They are) really getting into their characters.” Reynolds added that the students are having fun mastering the physicality of the play. “The script is so rich, and the kids just bring it to life,” she said. Both Schwartz and Lenhart pointed out that the timing is right for a show filled with ironic humor. “It’s lighthearted,” noted Schwartz. Lenhart agreed. “People need a comedy to give them a break from the real world,” she said. “I hope to be able to do that for people in the audience.” More information about LCHS may be found at www.lchsyes.org.
Christmas Sale, Breakfast Slated Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. The People’s Shakespeare Project will hold auditions for its winter production of William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” which will be performed on Wednesday, Feb. 23, through Sunday, Feb. 27. Performances will take place at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Auditions for “Julius Caesar” will be held on Monday, Nov. 15, and Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Ware Center. Actors
should prepare a one- to twominute Shakespeare monologue of a character from a play and be ready for cold readings from the text. All roles are open. On November 18, 1973, Bob Charles and Harold Kramer organized the very first Millersville Turkey Trot. The course was 10 miles long and attracted about 800 participants. Jeff Bradley, who had just competed in the NCAA national cross-country competition the day before, won that year’s race and received a turkey as his prize. The race became a 5K in 1978 to match the changing preferences of the running community and brought in an average of 125 to 150 competitors per year over the next few decades. For almost 40 years, the Turkey Trot was held the Sunday before Thanksgiving. In 2012, however, the date of the race moved to Thanksgiving morning and now sees more than 1,000 participants each year. The 49th annual Millersville Turkey Trot 5K and half-mile children’s fun run will be hosted at Millersville University’s Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville, on Thursday, Nov. 25. Dale High, chair of the High Foundation and chair emeritus of the High companies, served as board member and board chair of the Community Foundation from 2002 through 2006. His leadership spurred the organization to embrace a broader leadership role in the community and expand its purpose as a true philanthropic partner for Lancaster County. Christmas In The Country Bazaar And Craft Show Planned BY COURTNEY MENGEL
This holiday season, consider visiting and patronizing a church bazaar. The money you spend and the gifts you purchase contribute to the smalltown holiday experience. Church bazaars are a tradition that bring in the gift-giving season. These events do much more than put shoppers in the spirit of the season; they also help sustain their host churches. The money the churches bring in is crucial to the operating budget. The 44th Christmas in the Country bazaar and craft show will be held at Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, which usually draws more than 1,000 shop-
pers, will feature more than 30 carefully selected vendors and crafters. Types of items that may be purchased at the bazaar and craft show will include wreaths, jewelry, artwork, knitted items, photographs, holiday and seasonal ornaments, and more. The Apostles Crafters will offer items that have been handmade through the past year. Prepackaged food, including homemade soups, pies, sandwiches, and beef barbecue, will be available for purchase in a bustling food court. “I am most looking forward to seeing many regular customers who we have not seen for two years,” said Clara Kosmela, bazaar supervisor. “People should attend the bazaar because it gives them an

Calvary Homes Holds Dedication Event Calvary Homes dedicated two buildings on Aug. 21 in the fellowship hall on the continuing care retirement community’s campus. The dedication event included prelude music and refreshments. After the completion of a $13 million renovation and expansion, begun in 2018, Calvary Homes chose to honor Clifford K. Hurter and his wife, Carol Brady Hurter, in the naming of the community’s new Hurter Community and Administrative Center. Manheim Township School District November MT School Board Work Session and Voting Meeting
MT School Board Saturday Morning Conversations
The November School Board Work Session will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2021, and the School Board Voting Meeting on Thursday, November 18, 2021.
The MT community is invited to attend the Manheim Township School Board Community Conversations held at the District Office from 10:00 am -12:00 pm on designated Saturdays throughout the year. Health and safety mitigation efforts will be put in place for all Community Conversations. These drop-in sessions are informal, informational, and conversational in nature to provide the community the opportunity to meet representatives from the MT School Board and discuss important topics related to MT schools. The drop-ins are held on the Saturday morning between the School Board Work Sessions and Board Action Meetings.
