Little Free Library Adds Enchantment To Leaman Woods BY ANN MEAD ASH
o you ever arrive early for an appointment and decide to kill a few minutes by taking a walk? That is what I did on a lovely August day when I had an interview with a Landis Communities representative at Leaman Woods, located on the south side of the Landis Homes campus. Following the path from Amaryllis Lane past the gazebo and around the bend, I discovered a setting that appeared to have been transported from Narnia or Hobbiton. One of the ash trees in the woods has been converted into a Little Free Library. Fitted with a bookcase and glass door, along with a peaked roof, the library also has six benches situated in front of it. The Little Free Library was the dream of Don Ziegler and represents the efforts he and his wife, Priscilla, who oversees the Little Free Library, made

Lichty Hopes Painting Will Point To Supporting Foundation
Leola-based artist Jason Lichty can work in most artistic mediums. “I can paint, draw, sculpt, and create formal portraits, cartoons, abstracts,” said Lichty. But it is talking about the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) that lights up Lichty’s eyes. Referring to a painting called “Aquatic Harmony” he created for
Priscilla noted that the weatherproof bookcase also contains books that are helpful in learning about the woods. “We have reference books people can borrow while they are in the woods and then put back,” she said, noting that the books cover trees and birds. In addition, a photographer took photos of all the wildflowers found in the woods and created a book with their names for the library. “So, when you see the native flowers and you don’t know what they are, you can take this along (to help identify them),” explained Priscilla. Priscilla and Don reported that the year that the library opened it was featured on https://littlefree library.org as one of the most creative libraries to open that year. Recalling the ribbon cutting at the opening of the library, Priscilla noted how the community united to create the special space. “All the people involved in putting this together builders, the person who donated the funds for us to join the Free Little Libraries, the day care - there must have been 50 people here,” she said. Painter Fred Swarr currently has 36 paintings on display on the third floor of the Lititz Shirt Factory, 5 Juniper Lane, Lititz. If you plan carefully, you may even have a chance to watch Swarr creating one of his unusual fusions of art and music when the artist in residence turns the gallery into his studio for a few hours at a time. Swarr’s unique work blends a picture of a famous musician with sheet music by that artist - literally. Swarr orders sheet music for a particular
artist and glues it to the canvas, and then, working from a photograph of the musician associated with that song, he paints the musician’s face over the sheet music. The brainstorm for the series, which includes iconic artists like Aretha Franklin (“Respect”), Jerry Garcia (“Touch of Grey”), and Freddie Mercury (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), began around 2013 when Swarr painted a picture of clarinets while listening to an instrumental version of “Mack the Knife.” He moved from there to a rendition of John Lennon in a New York T-shirt painted over the music to “Imagine.”

to bring the enchanting location to Leaman Woods. Don, who is a member of the Friends of the Woods and Wetlands, was present when ash trees were being removed due to borer damage. He asked the workers to preserve more than 10 feet of one tree and to cut the top into a peak. He also asked for boards to be made from the trunk that was cut. With help from a resident who was a carpenter and the Landis Homes maintenance department, the tree was converted to a Little Free Library, which opened in May 2019. Priscilla visits the Little Free Library on a daily basis, but every two weeks she replenishes the supply with donated books from residents and organizers of the yearly Landis Homes book sale, as well as local authors who write their own stories. “The idea is that it’s a free library, and when you take the book, it’s yours, or if you have something, you can donate it,” explained Don. Each month, Priscilla removes books that have been in the library too long and takes them to Booksavers at the Ephrata ReUzit on State.

There is an old saying that laughter is the best medicine. The Potter’s House, an addiction recovery ministry for men and women, is prescribing a little laughter for whatever might ail those who wish to attend “Celebrate Life w/Laughter! The Potter’s House Friend Raiser.” Billed as “a night of celebrating new life for those struggling with addiction,” the show will put the spotlight on funnymen Gordon Douglas, Robert G. Lee, and Paul Aldrich, all known for their family-friendly humor. The event will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road,
New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 6. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted when purchased in advance. Family discounts are also available. He honed his comedic musical act performing skits and leading songs as a Young Life volunteer. The standup comedian has completed 14 recording projects, including his awardwinning “Mock ‘n’ Roll.” The Potter’s House, with locations in Leola, Brownstown, and New Holland, began as a program for men. The Potter’s House of Ruth for women opened in 2020. Joel Jakubowski, men’s program director, said that the men’s ministry is moving forward in several areas including an intensive phase one program to address the roots of issues and provide a restorative foundation before the men move into phase two and full-time employment. Once employed, students can build income and satisfy debt and restitution. A dynamic family program called FAITH, which stands for Family Awareness Instruction Truth and Healing, incorporates family understanding in the recovery process, and a
trauma-informed healing program is in the works with staff training in the core principles of Restoring the Foundations under the direction of Frank Snow. “We have grown tremendously,” noted Jakubowski, who referred to several of the new programs as “game changers” for students in recovery. Rec Department Plans Halloween Carnival The Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department will host its fifth annual Halloween Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 30. The event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Carriage House at
Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. The event will include Halloween-themed carnival games, a haunted expedition, and entertainment for youths of all ages. The Manheim
Township Police Department will host a Trunk or Treat featuring trunks decorated by various groups and businesses, and families are encouraged to come in costume. The parade and costume contest will start at 1:30 p.m. at the tennis courts. Awards will be presented to those with the best costume in each of the following divisions: 4 and under, 5 to 8, 9 to 12, and groups.
Admission to the carnival is free, and participation in carnival games and activities requires tickets. Tickets are available for a fee, payable with cash only. He followed that experience with a six-month apprenticeship with the renowned Jim Anderson at Anderson’s Boston studio, and in 2018, he created a stained-glass piece for Tempo. Lichty described the process of creating pieces for customers such as Tempo. “When a client wants a project, you have to have a rich knowledge in art history, architecture, and interior design,” said Lichty. “When you walk into a space, it will tell you what it needs (in response to) the colors, the woodwork, the countertops. You need to be in tune with that environment.” When Tempo grew in 2020, the owners asked Lichty to
Fire Chief Announces Future Plans Manheim Township Fire Chief Rick Kane has announced he will leave his post by the end of the year. He plans to join a private company in January 2022. Kane has been with Manheim Township Fire Rescue since 2007. He is credited with several major accomplishments, including transitioning the township’s three fire stations located at Neffsville, Eden, and southern Manheim into the Manheim Township Fire Rescue
Department and adding fulltime career firefighters to the ranks to replace the dwindling number of volunteer firefighters. Kane also established the office of fire marshal and created a Life Safety Inspection Program for all commercial businesses in Manheim Township. He developed the township’s initial strategic fire rescue plan and updated it. He has also served as the township’s emergency management coordinator during the
COVID-19 pandemic. In 2011, Kane was recognized with the Alan Brunacini Fire Service Executive Safety Award, presented by the International Association of Fire Chiefs, for his demonstrated and unique commitment to fire-service health and safety. A search for Kane’s replacement began immediately. The township intends to bring a new fire chief on board in December to spend time working with Kane before his departure.

Lichty, who graduated from Conestoga Valley High School, first sold his artwork when students at the school were asked to exhibit at the Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster. From there, he attended art school at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, selling his first commissioned piece at age 19. I have been an advocate for save the bay (efforts) since I was in high school.” “How important is air and water?” asked Lichty, who is prepared with statistics to back up his concern, noting that the situation in the bay affects 64,000 square miles, 18 million people, and 30,000 fishing jobs. He noted that the CBF has an umbrella perspective, which explains how increased macadam affects runoff and the types of poisons, such as nitrogen from fertilizer and mercury from power plants, that reach the bay. “Tire rubber dust in runoff from the roads and pavement washes into the bay,” he explained, pointing out that chemicals in blacktop constantly leach into the envi-

On Monday, Nov. 1, WSM will launch its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) with the goal of collecting over 70,000 pounds of nonperishable food - which would weigh roughly the same as 24 cars - by Sunday, Dec. 19. Proceeds from RMFD will go in two directions: providing meals for men, women, and children experiencing home-

The Outreach Center provides grocery assistance to over 2,000 individuals and families, sharing roughly 646,000 pounds of groceries with the community each year. According to Dan Siewart, vice president of community ministries and outreach, WSM serves food to about 300 families every week. Therefore, the food collected during RMFD is instrumental in meeting the needs of the community, especially as the winter season nears. This winter, WSM estimates it will serve nearly 45,000 meals in its dining hall for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. Over the colder months, WSM sees an increase in intakes as guests seek to escape the elements. “We appreciate people in the community who have partnered with us through this food drive,” said Siewart.

Mulberry St., will present two exhibits in November. “Emerging From the Shadows,” the latest collection of works from Lancaster-based artist Candace GreenbergThompson, will be on exhibit in the main gallery, along with “Dark Grain” by artist B. Emerson, whose artwork focuses on detailed graphite pencil and paper illustrations depicting a variety of themes. “Emerging From the Shadows” and “Dark Grain” will open with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 5 and will remain on display for the entirety of November. Greenberg-Thompson is a visual arts teacher at Lancaster Country Day School. She has been drawing all her life and loves the physical act of drawing and the directness
of the drawn line in documenting fleeting experiences. She uses a wide range of drawing, painting and printmaking media to create naturalistic and abstract works characterized by layers and organic lines. Emerson is an artist from West Reading, who focuses on detailed graphite pencil and paper illustrations depicting a variety of themes. Emerson’s inspiration for this exhibit is part of the healing process that was brought on in 2020 after the death of her spouse. Mulberry Art Studios offers free parking in the private lot behind the gallery. Jim Hoffer, owner of The Lititz Shirt Factory, heard of Swarr when the artist took part in the Lititz Art Associa-
tion show in Lititz Springs Park in July. Hoffer emailed Swarr about becoming the artist in residence at the Shirt Factory on the floor above Collusion through the end of December 2021. Swarr will be painting at the gallery periodically. He is currently working on a portrait of Mick Jagger with the sheet music for “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” under that iconic face. The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. LCFMC will host its seventh annual Discovering Earth’s Wonders Fall Show. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. Those who attend will see unique fossils, trilobites, Paleozoic wonders, gems, jewelry, minerals, and crystals from Pennsylvania and beyond. Many of the items included in the show have been collected by LCFMC members. Specimens will be displayed for perusal or purchase at discounted prices. There will also be free “ask the experts” analysis to identify special specimens. “This event is held each year just for our local friends and neighbors,” said club founder Chris Haefner. “They can come and find out about the club in a fun-filled environment.”

There will also be children’s activities, and a variety of hot food, provided by the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ Guild, will be available for purchase. Haefner noted that he is most looking forward to enjoying an in-person event with good conversation and good food. The show entrance will be in the rear of the church building. Tickets for the show can be purchased on the day of the event. Admission for kids age 5 and under is free. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club” on Facebook. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and outof-state field trips. Additionally, the club helps Scouts earn their merit loops and badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free. For instance, the Pequea Silver Mines is just one of the several places where geology is taught to local school districts. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for Scouts, and more.
Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host a Trunk or Treat and Movie Night for trick-or-treaters on Friday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. Church members and friends will decorate nearly 20 vehicles and give out safe treats in the church parking lot. Beginning at 7:15 p.m., all community members are
invited to watch the animated movie “Ferdinand” on a giant, outdoor inflatable screen. Attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs, blankets, a warm wrap or a sleeping bag for seating. Holiday Trains Ramble Planned The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will host a Holiday Trains Ramble on Saturday, Dec. 4. Participants will begin the day with a ride through the Chester Creek Valley on the West Chester Railroad’s Santa Express Train, enjoying live entertainment and a box lunch. Following the train ride, travelers will depart for the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station to begin a guid-
ed tour of “Underground Philadelphia: Subways, Railways & Stations.” Starting by trolley, then descending on foot into an underground concourse network, holiday ramblers will learn about the loss of the historic Broad Street Station, the 1905 to mid-1950s trolley and subway lines, the Broad Street subway, the Commuter Rail Terminal, and the former Reading Terminal. conclude at the Reading Terminal Market, where travelers will enjoy some free time and purchase dinner on their own. The last stop of the day will be the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania to view its garden railway display, which includes a quarter mile of tracks featuring model trains on multiple loops, tunnels, bridges, and rail lines. The display will feature holiday decorations.

Veritas Senior Named National Little World Play Sets Fall Giveaway Merit Semifinalist Little World Play, a local Veritas Academy has announced that 12th-grade student Jania Weist of Ephrata is a Semifinalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Students qualified for this honor based on their scores in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), with less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors attaining Semifinalist status. As one of 16,000 Semifinalists across the nation, Jania will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth
nearly $30 million that will be offered in the spring. Veritas head of school Ty Fischer noted that Jania has demonstrated high academic achievement, but also aims to help others succeed.
