SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

At North Museum, curiosity stokes imagination BY JEFF FALK

here exists a specific group of people who frequent museums merely to satisfy their curiosity. They don’t go to intentionally learn, but the learning happens organically, naturally. Perhaps it’s not important to know exactly what type of learning goes on at the North Museum, only that the place simply promotes learning. “It’s the joy of discovery, and it draws you in,” said Scott Downs, the North Museum’s director of development and strategic partnerships. “That’s what happens at a museum. As you wander around the museum, you discover things. You stumble into things. Who knows what you’ll find? You don’t know what to expect. It’s a fascinating place.”

For the curious of all ages, there is plenty to find and discover at the North Museum of Nature and Science, which is located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The North Museum is three floors of exhibits, informational displays, stories and memories in the making - more than 500,000 objects in all. “ Without learning, I don’t think any of us survive,” said Downs. “Humans have been learning since we first populated the Earth. The North Museum prides itself as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The natural sciences are important. We’re really proponents of curiosity. It’s terribly important to foster that interest.” An independent, nonprofit regional facility once associated with Franklin & Marshall College,

Staying faithful

In Township, Halloween is celebration of community

Last year, when David Kieffer was interviewed about the first FaithfulGive, the board president said that he hoped the online giving event would raise $500,000. “My minimum goal was to do $300,000,” recalled Kieffer. “(I thought), ‘If we do $500,000, it’s a resounding success.’” When all the donations were tallied up at the end of the event, the 2023 FaithfulGive had raised more than $729,000. “ T h at m o re t h a n m e t my

expectations,” said Kieffer. This year’s FaithfulGive will begin on Sunday, Oct. 20, and conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 22. This year, more than 70 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, and each day will be designated for certain activities. “While people can give on Sunday, (Oct. 20), the goal is to lay these organizations before the throne in prayer,” explained Kieffer of the opening day. “This year we are calling it Faithful Give Sunday - A Day of Prayer.” See Faithful pg 4

It’s hard to put a finger on. But it seems like the celebration of Halloween has sort of shifted and changed over the years. Still just as popular as ever, Halloween is a bit less scary and a little more family-oriented, community-driven and playful. It’s unclear if events like the Manheim Township Halloween Carnival are a result of that evolution or a cause of it. “Halloween is pretty much a
