In Lititz, peace is an event. “There is no true peace without justice,” said Jeanine Strom Boyer, outreach and relationship ministry coordinator for Lititz Church of the Brethren (LCOB) and an organizer of the upcoming PeaceFest. “When there is conflict or disagreement, we work together to be reconciled and find a resolution. In matters in which we are not of the same mind, we seek to live with forbearance toward one another. We believe that war only brings destruction and death. In times of war, as in all times, we work to serve the needs of people and to work for peace in nonviolent ways.” From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, the LCOB, which is located at 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, will host the inaugural PeaceFest: Forging Peace and Cultivating Justice. The event, which is a collaboration of a handful of local Church of the Brethren congregations - including ones in Lancaster, Elizabethtown, Mountville and York - will advocate for the concept of peace by physically turning guns into life-affirming implements like garden tools and jewelry. The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. “PeaceFest is a family-friendly event designed to bring people together in hope, education, fellowship and action around a shared vision of a more peaceful world,” said Strom Boyer. “This event reflects a longstanding commitment from the churches to promote peace, justice and nonviolence within our communities.”

There will also be speakers, including Shane Claiborne, an activist, best-selling author and co-founder of RAWtools, an organization dedicated to turning weapons into items of hope. “The event has been named a fest because we want it to have a festival atmosphere,” said Strom Boyer. “A special gathering with music and food where people can have fun as well as learn ways to live peacefully and growing into a more just world.” Hundreds of people from across central Pennsylvania are expected to attend PeaceFest. “This is a first-time event,” said Claiborne. “We want people to come to the event, to participate with others in fun and educational activities. Church Plant Blossoms in County When Grace Moser talks a b out the ne w Global Methodist Church (GMC) she is helping to plant in western Lancaster County, her face lights up and her voice rises a bit with enthusiasm. “We have just seen an explosion of this movement,” proclaimed Moser, who, as the worship leader, is working alongside Pastor Joe DiPaolo and Frank and Joyce Young to help organize Cornerstone GMC. Cornerstone has been meeting in the tabernacle at the historic Landisville Camp Meeting since July 12. On Sunday, Sept. 20, the church plans to hold its first meeting in the Lancaster Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Calling GMC “a return to Orthodox Wesleyanism,” Moser stated that Cornerstone began to form following a court decision on April 22 in a case involving about 50 Pennsylvania churches and the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist

Church. The court held that congregations wishing to disaffiliate from the conference must give up church buildings and property. Moser responded to the decision by contacting the Northeast GMC about forming a new congregation in Lancaster, reaching out to her longtime friends the Youngs on the same day. “That’s where this congregation in Lancaster (County) was born,” explained Moser. On April 30, DiPaolo met with Moser and the Youngs to discuss church planting in the area and how to spread the word about an exploratory meeting they planned to hold in Mount Joy on May 5. Nearly 90 people attended that meeting, and the group formed a 10-member leadership team. The GMC movement in western Lancaster County had begun. In late May, a second public meeting was held, and this one included representatives of the Northeast Conference of the GMC. Aldersgate GMC in York became the sponsor

of the new congregation, offering to provide support while Cornerstone applied for nonprofit status. “We voted on the name ‘Cornerstone’ based on Ephesians 2:19-20, which proclaims that Jesus is the chief cornerstone of the church,” stated Moser. The group began meeting in the unairconditioned tabernacle, averaging up to 90 worshipers each week. “O v e r t h e n e x t t w o months, we saw all sorts of people and resources just about fall from the

sky,” stated DiPaolo, who has served at a number of churches in eastern Pennsylvania, including as lead pastor of a church in downtown Lancaster, until he retired after 40 years of ministry. “There was such enthusiasm that we started worship services on July 12.” Moser descr ibed the service as “high liturgical,” noting, “We focus on the liturgy and the Scripture.” She added that music for the service includes traditional hymns mixed with

contemporar y worship songs. “We are doing our best to encourage the Spirit to move through different types of music,” explained Moser, who stated that attendees come from both traditional and contemporary backgrounds. Worship is followed by a sermon based on a particular Scripture passage. Moser noted that services generally last about an hour. She pointed out that the congregation hopes to offer a Sunday school for children by the end of the year. For adults, home groups meet on Wednesdays to discuss the week’s Scripture in relation to specific questions. According to Moser, these groups, originally called “class meetings,” are the foundation of the church. “We aim to be transformational,” she explained, adding that groups examine Scripture in light of questions such

as “ What does this say about God?,” “What does this say about mankind?” and “What will we do about this and who will we share it with?” Moser stated that the groups differ from Bible studies because studies tend to be more focused on gaining information. “GMC is a movement that wants to make disciples of Jesus Christ,” she explained. Currently, Cornerstone is on track to be adopted as a GMC congregation in early December. One other GMC church in the county is located in the Gap area. “It usually takes a year to get to this point,” explained Moser. “We started worshiping (together) in only six to eight weeks. Quest for Learnng is a secular, nonprofit organization. “The lectures are amazing, and we get amazing lecturers,” said Carroll. “These are presenters who everybody loves to hear. Sometimes our professors and presenters tell us they are ecstatic to be doing this for Quest because no one is texting, no one is falling asleep and the people are so attentive. They’re listening, and, I hope, learning.” Q ue s t fo r L e a r n i n g Lancaster classes employ spoken lectures, some reading and visual aids to present the subject materials. There are no grades, tests or homework. Among the most popular of the rotating topics are music, history, film and baseball, but there are also classes focusing on coffee, trees, writing, science and worldviews. “No matter what it is that you’re looking for, whether it’s challenging to p i c s o r k n o w l e d g e , you can find it at Quest,” said Carroll, a resident of southern L ancaster County. “People just love the camaraderie and the education. These people really want to learn.” Currently, there are more than 300 individuals registered for Quest for Learning Lancaster

courses, mostly senior citizens and mainly people from Lancaster County. On any given Thursday morning, more than 200 of those registrants will be in attendance. The classes are led and taught by 30 volunteer instr uctors, including former and current professors, lawyers, industry experts and community leaders. “I’m al ways a li tt le disappointed when I ask people if they have ever heard of Quest and they haven’t,” said Carroll. “We have really tried to work hard on getting the word out. I think everybody deserves to know about it. It’s a great opportunity.” Q ue s t fo r L e a r n i n g Lancaster was established in 1976 and has spent the last 49 years of its existence at the accommodating Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. “ W hen it was first started, local ministers became interested in this for mat ,” said Car roll. “They were impressed by the number of people who attended. It was initially held at First Presbyterian Church, but it was so small of a venue that it had to be moved to Trinity Lutheran Church, and it’s been there ever since. In the morning, Sharon Norton, executive director of Global Mission for the Church of the Brethren, will preach in the 10:15 a.m. contemporary service in the church’s Worship & Event Center and the 10:30 a.m. traditional service in the sanctuary. Her topic is “Under Their Own Vine and Fig Tree,” based on Micah 4:1-5. Norton worked in overseas missions for 27 years, including the final four years as co-administrator for Europe and Africa with the Mennonite Mission Network. Previously, she served for 14 years as a mission worker in Germany with Eastern Mennonite Missions/Mennonite Mission Network. She is a graduate of Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary and an ordained minister in the Mennonite Church. She and her husband, Steve, live in Goshen, Ind. In addition, the Rev. Carlos “Sandy ” Garcia , president of the Church of the Brethren in the Dominican Republic, will preach in the 10:15 a.m. Spanish language service in the chapel. In the evening , the congregation will host ENGAGE: A Church of the Brethren Global Mission Gathering from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Worship & Event Center. The event will provide opportunities for worship, conversation, and learning under the theme of “United in Mission,” based on Revelation 7:9. I don’t think they always think of art as being part of things. I think this is just another way to bring people together.” The next edition of MTRPP’s annual Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will be staged from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the township’s 70-acre park, 2369 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. The rainor-shine event offers free admission and free parking at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, and dogs are welcome as well. “This event has been happening for many years,” said Bulla. “It’s a great way to get artists out and have an endof-the-summer Saturday. It’s nice to take a moment to enjoy nature and some art. The general theme of the art show is nature. All of the artists’ focus is tied to nature.” The Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will feature the work of more than 25 artists, most of whom are from Lancaster County, and their creations in the mediums of painting, photography, clay sculptures, metal sculptures, line drawing, crafts and jewelry. Some of the artists’ work will be available for purchase, and prizes will be awarded in a handful of categories based on the impartial judging of an art expert. “It’s calm, but lively,” said Bulla, herself a trained artist. “It’s very welcoming, very relaxed. It’s people wandering around and admiring art. “Landis Woods is very quiet and very serene,” con-

tinued Bulla. “But it’s also beautiful; it’s a nature park. It feels secluded, but you’re actually surrounded by the township.” The presence of live music throughout the day will certainly do nothing to detract from the event’s atmosphere. The Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will feature the musical stylings of Stone Soup String Band from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; Jim Sorrentino Jazz Band from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m; Lancaster County Folk Music and Fiddle Society from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.; and the Steve Barth Band from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. There will also be food trucks and hot and cold refreshments available from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Come on out and make a day of it. “It gives people an opportunity to present their work,” said Bulla. “We see an influx of people at 10 o’clock, then later in the afternoon we’ll see another influx. But there’s a constant flow of people coming and going. The artists invite their friends as well.” During the 27 years of its existence, the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show has endured its share of highs and lows, but it has remained a constant in the community. “I’d like to think that people know about it, just because it’s been around so long,” said Bulla. “We try to get the word out about it. It’s a long-standing event that has an opportunity to become more. I’m focused more on where it could go.
