It can be just your love of Lititz.” LAA has a new venue for sharing art with the community, and it will make Lititz’s already lively downtown even more vibrant. Recently, LAA opened a new gallery for highlighting its members’ work at
Lititz Springs Pool is a great community resource. It gives pleasure and enjoyment to hundreds of community members throughout the summer. But at the end of the season, Lititz Springs Pool (LSP) really goes to the dogs. “I am honestly not sure why dogs love water so much,” said Mike Pesesky, who’s been the membership coordinator at the Lititz recCenter, which operates the pool, for four years. “I assume it is dependent on breed and how they’re raised. I would say most dogs that come to this event are inclined to love the water.” The Doggie Swim at Lititz Springs Pool is one of the community’s unique events. It combines the love of dogs, the love of water and the love of community, and it provides dogs with an opportunity to do one of the many things they love to do - swim. This year’s Doggie Swim will be held at Lititz Springs Pool, which is located at 201 Maple St., from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Everyone and their dogs are welcome. There is an entrance fee associated with the Doggie Swim, visitors are limited to two dogs per person and proof of up-to-date vaccinations are required. “The goal is to have a nice, lighthearted end-of-season event for members of the community and allow them to bring their pups and let them have a blast in the water,” said Pesesky. “In my experience, the vibe is relaxed and fun loving because who doesn’t love to watch dogs run around and have the times of their lives?

is a great entrance greeter, loves to give high fives and arm wrestle, and will sit with fans to watch the game.” A minor league franchise, the Lancaster Stormers compete in the Atlantic League, a circuit whose season runs from late April to early September. As for Cylo, he is in a league of his own. With his help, the Stormers have one of the most loyal fanbases in the Atlantic League, drawing an average of more than 4,000 spectators at each home contest. “Cylo is our biggest cheerleader and does a great job of pumping up the crowd,” said Davis. “My favorite thing about Cylo is how outgoing and funny he is. I grew up coming to Stormers games and have loved him since I was a kid. Something a lot of people don’t know about him is that he is actually a distant cousin of the Phillie Phanatic.”

Cylo has been part of the Lancaster professional baseball franchise since the organization’s inception 21 seasons ago. While banners have been hung and players have come and gone, the sturdy Cylo has been one of the Stormers’ few constants. “Cylo is named after Cy Young,” said Davis. “His full name is Cyloicious L. Stormer and has been that since the Stormers first debuted in 2005. I hope everyone gets the chance to meet Cylo. You know where to find him.” Outside of Penn Medicine Park, Cylo makes dozens of local appearances each year. He’s just as comfortable reading books to preschoolers as he is visiting residents of retirement communities. “I do schedule the appearances,” said Davis, a resident of the city. “It’s a lot of fun connecting with different people and organizations, and it’s always rewarding to see faces light up when he arrives. Cylo appeals to all ages, and Cylo loves everyone.” “Cylo is very easily recognized in the Lancaster area,” concluded Davis. “When traveling downtown, we often receive honks from passing cars and we are frequently stopped for pictures. LAA Gallery from pg 1 51 N. Broad St., Lititz. LAA will formally introduce the new showcase space to the community during a grand opening ceremony from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. There will be a celebratory ribbon cutting, snacks and artwork from LAA members representing five mediums on display. “You’re going to have some very excited artists there,” said Daggett. “Getting your artwork displayed anywhere is a challenge. I think we’re just going to be elated. We support our members, we promote the art from our association, and we want to give them a venue other than art shows and craft shows.” LAA’s new art gallery is located on the first floor of a building that used to house Savory Gourmet.
The fresh space will allow for the hanging of about 100 works of art, as well as numerous pieces of sculpture and jewelry. An inviting storefront will welcome visitors to the gallery. As a place of business, LAA’s art gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays. “For folks who have been with the Lititz Art Association for years, this has always been a goal,” said Daggett. “You need to find the right location. This is the perfect location. It’s got an awning in the front and it’s an old building - and it’s downtown Lititz. It just broadens what Lititz already has.” In addition to providing a permanent and consistent place for LAA members to display their work,
the 51 N. Broad St. gallery will give the organization an ability to host art classes and offer an event space to the community. Beginning in January, LAA will conduct its regular monthly meetings - at 6:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday - at the new gallery. LAA has been holding its public monthly meetings at the Lititz Public Library. “The rent will be paid as we sell our artwork,” said Daggett. “We’re looking to rent our space to members or other artists. “We want it to be inviting,” she continued. “We want people to visit, and we want to keep their interest. We want to make it interesting enough to draw people back. We want following. The intent is to have nice, beautiful art and to have affordable art.”
LAA’s current plans also include staging its annual Square Foot Art Show inside the gallery in July of 2027. LAA’s other community events - the Fine Arts Show, which will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square; the Holiday Gift Show, which will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St.; and the Lititz Park Walk, in June of 2027 - will remain outdoors. The Lititz Art Association, which includes more than 100 creative members, was founded by Floyd Hackman in 1966. The Ware Center for the Arts, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will present a We the People First Friday on Friday, Sept. 4. It is free and open to the public. The event will include a performance by father-and-son folk duo Mark and Jordan Rast from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lyet Lobby. Based in Lancaster, Mark and Jordan specialize in Appalachian traditions and bluegrass music, and their live performances feature the banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar.
The Ware Center will also host a reception to celebrate the opening of the gallery exhibit “Wild in the Shadows” by Lancaster County artist Rob Homan. The reception will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Regitz Gallery. Through intricate sculptures crafted from locally sourced wood, Homan’s exhibit explores nature, animal forms, and people’s connection to their lost human instinct. Homan spends hundreds of hours creating each sculpture through a process that involves creating a series of small gouges that are then painted in vibrant colors, bringing their nuanced textures to life. From 5 to 9 p.m., the Ware Center will serve as a stop on the Lancaster Print Crawl, a citywide interactive printing event that showcases the design and print communities in Lancaster. The event helps to raise scholarship funds for local graphic design and printing students.

Some visitors and their dogs stay and play for two hours; some chill for 20 minutes. “The best thing for me is how excited and happy the dogs are to run around, play and splash in the water,” said Pesesky, a Millersville resident and owner of Jester, a westie/terrier mix, and of Julie, a chorkie. “I think everyone enjoys seeing the wide variety of breeds, especially because they come in all shapes and sizes.” The Doggie Swim will serve as Lititz Springs Pool’s last official event of the 2026 season. The pool opened around the Memorial Day holiday. “I can’t speak for the relationships others have with their dogs,” said Pesesky. “But for me, it’s about always knowing they love you unconditionally and that they are happy to see you, no matter if you’ve been gone for 15 minutes or 15 days. Dogs see owners at their best and at their worst. They are family.” Lititz Springs Pool hosted its first Doggie Swim in 2014. “For me, the Doggie Swim is one of my favorite events because it typically signifies the end of the summer at the pool,” said Pesesky, “because there are a lot of people who work incredibly hard to ensure Lititz Springs Pool is a safe and enjoyable place to attend year in and year out. The mission of the Lititz recCenter is to enrich the lives of the community by providing exceptional programs and facilities that promote the participation of individuals, families, businesses and groups from all backgrounds.” With Doggie Swim, the Lititz recCenter is certainly barking up the right tree.
