Father-daughter team creates children’s book together BY JEFF FALK
here are so many meaningful things that a father and daughter can do together. Collaborating on a book is one of them. That’s precisely what Corey Fogleman and his daughter Piper did, and the result of their collective talents is the children’s book “Market Day: A Lancaster County Poem.” Corey is the poem’s author, and Piper is the book’s illustrator. “It is a dream come true,” said Corey, a family physician who lives in Manheim Township. “To be able to partner with your child and give her responsibility, it’s meant a lot to me. It’s been an opportunity to see her grow up. It was a great project for both of us. I’m hoping we will be able to look back on other things we did together.” “I thought it turned out well, a lot better than we expected,” said Piper, a freshman at Manheim Township High School. “Everything just works out really well together. It captures
T
everything that makes Lancaster so great. It introduces everything that Lancaster has to offer.” Corey’s poem is 18 stanzas in length, and each stanza has a corresponding illustration from Piper. Among the illustrations are Piper’s depictions of Lancaster County destinations like the National Watch and Clock Museum,
“I wrote the poem for my kids, so they will remember all the cool things to do in Lancaster.” Long’s Park, Central Market, the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania and Musser Park, sites that occupy sentimental places in the Foglemans’ hearts. “Our children were very young when we moved to Lancaster in 2010,” said Corey. “ We started exploring the area, and we kind of fell in love with the area. That’s what I wanted to celebrate in the poem. I
wrote the poem for my kids, so they will remember all the cool things to do in Lancaster.” Originally, Corey had approached an artist about providing the accompanying illustrations for his poem, but when she was unable to do it, Piper stepped up and said, “I can do this.” “I think, in a way, it brought us closer,” said Piper. “We put an idea together and made something great.” “We’ve never done anything like this before,” said Corey. “Piper is kind of coming into her own as an artist. She can see things through ’til the end. I was worried it would be a lot of pressure for her.” The Foglemans self-published “Market Day: A Lancaster County Poem” and then distributed it to several area bookstores and a few local visitor’s centers. They are currently working their way through their second shipment of books. Corey and Piper mutually decided to give all profits from the sale of See Children’s book pg 4

It’s not just how hard you hit it. It’s not even just how far you hit it. At Overlook Golf Course, a premium is placed on shot making. That’s what makes the local course a true test of a golfer’s abilities. Located at 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, Overlook Golf Course is a 6,110-yard test that plays to a par of 70 - 35 each on the front and back nines. “We’re old,” said Overlook’s director of golf, Ken Ord. “We’re almost
100 years old, and we’re not like the modern golf courses, which have length. We’re on 105 acres, and that’s not a lot for a golf course.” He noted that the course is known for its conditioning. “Another one of our strengths is location,” he added. “We’re in the heart of Lancaster County.” Overlook is one of eight public golf courses in Lancaster County and one of only two that are municipally owned. Operated and maintained by Manheim Township, Overlook Golf Course hosts nearly See Overlook golf pg 2
