You can go for the exercise and physical activity. You can go for the sweet treats. You can go to support kids, families and mental health.
Of course, there is also a fourth option - D. All of the above.
COBYS Family Services’ Bike and Hike fundraiser is a great many things to a great many people.
“Bike and Hike is really a broad event,” said Anne Stokes, who’s been COBYS Family Services director of development and communications for six years. “It’s not just one thing. There are several different ways for people to participate. However it makes sense for them. But what it’s really all about is spending time together and celebrating all the services COBYS provides.”
COBYS Family Services will present the 29th edition of its annual Bike and Hike event in Lititz from
noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. The event will consist of a 10-mile and a 25-mile bike ride, a 3-mile walk, a 1.5-mile Tasty Tour and a festivities-concluding ice cream social - because everyone always has room for ice cream.
“The best thing about the Bike and Hike is the way you get to have fun and at the same time do good things for your community,” said Stokes. “You get to come as you are. What’s really special is that everyone comes together after the event and learns how COBYS is making a difference in the community.”
All the festivities included with Bike and Hike will originate from Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The event will begin at noon with the 25-mile bicycle ride registration and start, followed by the check-in and start of the Tasty Tour of four downtown confectionary stops - Dosie Dough, Café Arabella, CAVOLO! and Slate Café - at 1 p.m.

Trail Life USA Troop PA-0316 will host its initial open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Cornerstone Church, 80 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz.
Hospice & Community Care will hold its 41st Labor Day Auction at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville, on Saturday, Aug. 30, and Monday, Sept. 1, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Labor Day Auction, presented by Rodgers & Associates, is free to attend, with proceeds benefiting patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care and grief support.
The event will feature a wide variety of new and used items up for bids, an array of gift certificates and gift baskets, and six specialty auctions. A high-end auction on Sept. 1 will include vacations, fine jewelry, handyman services, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and handcrafted items. A giveaway drawing will give ticketholders a chance to win a 2025 Chevy Trax. The event will also feature Amish-made food.
The specialty auctions on Aug. 30 will be Art, Day of Care, Tools, and the Plant Auction. The Art Auction has original paintings from well-known local artists, as well as the debut of the 2025 Memorial Garden Ornament. At the Day of Care Auction, attendees may purchase a day of care for one patient.
The Tool Auction will feature new and used power and hand tools donated by local construction compa-
nies and individuals. The Plant Auction will take place on both Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 this year, and it will feature hundreds of plants donated by many local greenhouses and florists.
The Sept. 1 specialty auctions will be Sports Memorabilia, a dedicated Quilt Auction, and the Plant Auction. The Sports Auction will showcase items from regional, state, and national icons with guest auctioneer and “Sports Talk” host Eric May. A specialty Quilt Auction will include handquilted pieces from the Amish, quilters’ groups, and volunteers, as well as gently used quilts in all sizes.
Hospice & Community Care has been partnering with local businesses, individuals, the Amish community, and volunteers to grow this event over the past 41 years. This year, there are more than 80 sponsors. All proceeds from the Labor Day Auction directly benefit patients and families receiving hospice and palliative care, as well as grief support through the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss. In 2024, the Labor Day Auction raised more than $1 million.
For a schedule of events, a listing of items up for bid, and more, visit www .LaborDayAuction.org or call 717-295-3900.
Registration and the start of the 10-mile bicycle ride and the 3-mile walk will also begin at 1 p.m. Then, at 2:45 p.m. the Incredible Ice Cream Celebration will begin on the grass behind Lititz Church of the Brethren.
“The Bike and Hike is a very relaxed event,” said Stokes. “The COBYS staff warmly greets you and checks you in. The Incredible Ice Cream Celebration is a time for all the participants to come together. We use that time to talk about all the great things going on at COBYS.”
More than 300 individuals, family members and community members are expected to attend.
“It’s really everybody, just like our community,” said Stokes of the participants. “It’s people of all ages, because that’s what it takes to support the committed human care that we provide. It’s people who have supported us for a long time. It’s some of our foster families. It’s a lot of donors and supporters. It might be people who have heard about us from a neighbor or a friend.”
Organizers of the Bike and Hike fundraiser are hoping to realize $100,000 in proceeds for COBYS Family Services. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $2.5 million for the organization, which provides foster, adoption and counseling services in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland and Schuylkill Counties.
“The money will go
toward our overall operating expenses,” said Stokes. “The ultimate goal is to make sure COBYS has continued resources to support our work throughout the year. Without these financial resources, the COBYS organization wouldn’t be able to provide the services it does day in and day out. Throughout the year, things pop up. When we need funds for things like fostering and counseling, the money is there.”
COBYS, which operates offices at 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster, and at 134 E. King St., Lancaster, was founded in 1996 and employs more than 90 staff members across all of its programs. COBYS Family Services conducts or benefits from five other annual fundraisers and also receives financial support through fees for services, a variety of grants, private donations and state and county resources.
“Our mission is to educate and empower children and adults to reach their full potential,” said Stokes. “We care about our clients in their times of need. We can’t always fix all the problems, but we know we can treat people with dignity, compassion and hope. There are critical needs in our community, and COBYS Family Services is an agency to meet those needs. If you value those things, we hope you’ll join us at Bike and Hike to make that care happen.”

This summer, the Lancaster County STEM Alliance (LCSA) partnered with Rock Lititz to host its annual Educator Externship aimed at connecting classroom learning to the real-world demands of today’s workforce. The full-day experience brought educators from across the region onto the Rock Lititz campus, where they explored firsthand how academic concepts translate into meaningful, high-demand careers.
Participants engaged in hands-on activities across a range of fields, from audio engineering and stage design to project management and equipment fabrication. Educators also had the opportunity to speak with Rock Lititz professionals about their career journeys, educational pathways and the blend of skills critical to success in their roles and in today’s
job market.
The externship not only highlighted the diverse and often lesser-known career opportunities available in Lancaster County but also reinforced the importance of aligning education with local industry needs. Educators left the experience better equipped to design lessons that reflect both student interest and the essential skills, from technical proficiency to creativity and collaboration, that employers value.
This year’s program builds on the momentum of previous LCSA externships hosted by regional industry leaders such as Lancaster Farming, Susquehanna Printing, CNHi, Eurofins, High Industries and Advanced Cooling Technologies (ACT).

“A lot of people in the community just don’t know about Trail Life USA and that we have a local troop,” said Tyer, a resident of Lititz. “We want to reach out to every family in the community and say, ‘We’re Trail Life USA, here are our values.’ We want to make everyone aware of who we are; we love who we are. Trail Life is not just for boys, but also for the fathers. We see the fathers get out of it just as much as the boys.”
Troop PA-0316’s open house will feature a handful of informal educational stations manned by instructors. Visitors can learn about tenting and campsites, campfires, knot tying and cooperation through a tug-of-war team-building exercise.

“All of these different activities are fun, but they’re educational as well,” said Tyer. “We hope (the boys) learn an understanding of who they are in God’s world. We want them to have a better understanding of how they fit in with what God’s created. We want them to use these skills for the rest of their lives and to lead others to Christ.”
Trail Life USA Troop PA-0316 is made up of 40 boys, 16 fathers, moms and grandparents from 24 families who reside in Lititz, Manheim Township, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Penn Manor and Lebanon.
