dvocating for the use of solar energy isn’t really a part of any official governing action taken by the Manheim Township Board of Commissioners. But the board of commissioners does encourage local residents to look into solar energy as a way to improve their quality of life. To w n s h i p c o m m i s s i o n e r Je re m y Zimmerman, on the other hand, is a proponent of solar energy. “ W hen any of us (commissioners) speak, we’re speaking for ourselves,” said Zimmerman. “As a township, if it makes sense for residents to get solar, we encourage it. As a township, we definitely support it. We definitely encourage homeowners to look into it. At the end of the day, it’s about choosing what’s right for you. It has taken some time, but Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ Suicide Prevention Conference has picked up steam. It’s making a difference. “The quality of the conference is improving,” said Kim McDevitt, who’s been MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ executive director for nine years. “This conference is so packed with such great education. Folks are fully engaged and asking good questions. It gives me hope when I see our community coming together year after year. We all have a responsibility in this. To

The moral of the stor y ref lects the mission of the organization. “Anne of Green Gables” and Servant Stage are a match made in community theater heaven. Not only is Johnathan Bauer the executive director of the nonprofit Servant Stage, but he’s also the director of the delightful play “Anne of Green Gables.” “When you get these shows based on novels, there are so many themes and so many messages,” said Bauer. “Part of it is kindred spirits and friendships, and the transformative powers of families. These kindred spirits can bring out the best in us. With the power of love and friendship, you can be more of yourself. “Anne has had a pretty difficult life, and she has this amazing optimism, hope, creativity and desire to connect with people,” added Bauer. “She sees the extraordinary in life.” Servant Stage will present 19 performances of “Anne of Green Gables” from Friday, S e p t . 4 , t h r o u g h S u n d a y, Sept. 27 - mostly on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays - inside Lancaster Mennonite School’s High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The show is free to attend, and a goodwill offering will be accepted. The two-hour performances are broken down into two acts and separated by an intermission. “It moves pretty quickly, and it has this Golden Age of Broadway feel to it,” said Bauer. “It’s a period piece set in the late 1800s, with big dance numbers and a big cast. Pet Adoption Event Planned

Auditions Open for MU Orchestra

In partnership with N B C U n i v e r s a l L o c a l ’s annual, nationwide Clear the Shelters pet adoption event and in celebration of National Clear the Shelters Day, Humane Pennsylvania will host an adoption event on Saturday, Aug. 29. The event will take place at the Betsy & Ted Lewin Adoption Center for Cats & Critters, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The adoption fee will be waived for cats and critters over 6 months old. A do pt ion s i nc l ude a 30-day health supplement; spaying or neutering prior to adoption; vaccinations, including current rabies vaccination; de-worming medication; flea treatment, microchipping and chip registration; and a free 1-pound bag of pet food. All potential adopters

The Millersville University (MU) Orchestra will provide an opportunity for community musicians to audition to become members of the orchestra. Community members of all ages, from high school and older, are encouraged to audition on all orchestra instr uments, with priority given to string instruments. Musicians are asked to prepare a solo or etude, three to four minutes in length, for the audition. Auditions will be held during the week of Monday, Aug. 24, by appointment by contacting conductor Brian Norcross at brian.norcross@ millersville.edu. Orchestra rehearsals will begin on Monday, Aug. 31, and will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. at the Winter Center on the MU campus. An illustrated hardback children’s book titled “All in a Day With Daisy” was recently published by three sisters, Judy Smoker, June Hollinger, and Rhonda Nissley, who grew up in Strasburg as the Siegrist girls and are now married and living in Lancaster County with families of their own. In 2023, a year after their mother passed, the sisters took a trip to Florida to reminisce and visit Marco Island, where their parents enjoyed vacationing. While there, they talked about how they felt God prompting them to find a way to carry on their mother’s legacy by using their talents for God’s glory and sharing Jesus with others. After going on a dolphin tour in Florida, the sisters came up with the idea to use their talents to create a children’s book. The story centers on Daisy, a lovable dolphin, and her friends Max the Manatee and Sammy the Sea Turtle. A fun day playing games together in the cove leads to Daisy feeling lost and alone

in the ocean, but she discovers that she is never alone when she has a guiding light leading her home. The story is written as an allegory pointing readers to Jesus. Smoker used her talents to create original painted watercolor illustrations for the book. Hollinger wrote the story while Nissley used her expertise in layout and design to make the book ready to publish. The book is available at www.radiantstarbooks .com. Suicide Prevention from pg 1 see people continuing to come tells me they really care about (preventing) suicide.” T h e o r g a n i z a t i o n ’s seventh annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. This year’s conference theme is “Hope in Action: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention.” That Thursday’s agenda will feature four one-hour breakout sessions, during which 16 topics will be addressed, including finding stillness, how faith and journaling bring peace to an anxious mind, hope beyond the visible, maternal mortality related to mental health, when clinicians grieve, and the power of sounds and spoken word. Delivering the keynote address will be Dr. Jay Breneman, who’s the

director of firearm suicide prevention for CeaseFire Pennsylvania. Interested individuals can register for the Suicide Prevention Conference at https://tinyurl .com/5n6hjpdy. “We want to bring everyone to gether and g ive them the tools to see what prevention looks like,” said McDevitt. “It’s a lot of community building too. It’s a very difficult subject matter, but people come together to talk about solutions. Like, ‘What could we be doing differently? What could we be doing better?’ No single organization can prevent suicide; it takes a community.” More than 270 individuals are expected to attend the conference, including health care and mental health care professionals, educators, company employees, faith leaders and community members. “It’s for everyone,” said

McDevitt, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s a really neat event. It’s so heartfelt. You see people connecting and talking about a very difficult topic. I see people walking away with hope. Conversations continue beyond the conference. We have made progress with the stigma, but there are too many people still struggling in silence. It gives people insight and motivation, and they walk away with tools they can use right away.” In 2025, a total of 87 Lancaster County residents were victims of suicide, the highest total since 2012. This year, the locale is on pace to reduce that number. “Suicide is ver y complicated,” said McDevitt. “Not everyone who dies from suicide has a mental health issue. Prevention comes in detection and early intervention. I think our work has really forced

a redirection of the stigma. Many folks still don’t know the warning signs of suicide. Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of suicide. Those are the types of things we’re going to be talking about at the conference.” MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties oversees the suicide prevention coalition, which established the conference in 2018. The organization, which employs six full-time staff members and six part-time staff members, has been operating for more than 70 years. “We’ve been around for a very long time,” said McDevitt. “A lot of people know us as ‘MHA.’ We’ve always been known for education, advocacy and support, and now I think we’re going deeper.”

I think the audience can connect with the characters.” Nearly 150 individuals are involved with Servant Stage’s production of “Anne of Green Gables,” a roster that includes performers, musicians, set builders, production team members, ushers and concession stand workers. A total of 70 professional and amateur actors and actresses, between the ages of 5 and 70, make up the double-role cast. “We’re trying to portray a town,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “Our cast is more than a typical theater show. We’ve got retirees, workers from different occupations, and half of the cast are students. It helps to create this feeling of a town.”

Since its founding in 2015, Servant Stage has generated more than 100 productions and staged more than 1,500 performances. Currently, Servant Stage, which is headquartered at 1842 William Penn Way, Lancaster, is

producing more than 200 performances each year. “I think we ’re really unique in walking the line between community theater and professional theater,” said Bauer. “We want to be accessible and have educational opportu-

nities. At this point, I think Servant Stage is the largest pay-as-you-will theater troupe in the country. That makes us very unique. “The beauty of theater is just the way it brings communities together and people together,” Bauer continued. “That’s the why of why we do theater. Both within the cast and in the audience, there are these shared experiences.” Servant Stage will also stage Lion King Kids at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church, 530 Milton Road, Lancaster, as well as 27 performances of Joy to the World from Friday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Dec. 20, at various locations across L ancaster County. Members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron in Lancaster attended Hawk Mountain Ranger School, one of CAP’s longest-running and most challenging national cadet training programs, ending on July 19. This year is the 70th anniversary of Hawk Mountain, located in Kempton. During the weeklong training program, cadets rappelled, practiced land navigation, and learned wilderness survival and search

Hawk Mountain’s program seeks to teach leadership and field readiness and to help participants build confidence. It also supports CAP’s emergency services mission. CAP rangers trained at Hawk Mountain are expected to use their new skills to improve their squadron’s emergency services program and lead fellow members in advanced search and rescue operations. The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has also announced the promotions and awards earned by cadets and senior members at the group’s July 27 meeting. Four cadets were recognized for attending Cadet Training School at Fort Indiantown Gap. Cadet Airman 1st Class Kaiden Painter of Leola and Cadet Senior Airmen Luca Hermosillo

and rescue operations. They learned aircraft search techniques used in downed aircraft missions, including clue detection, evidence search, and terrain-based search patterns. There was also a visit from a medical helicopter crew, which landed at the training site and showed the cadets how air-medical teams prepare equipment, stabilize injured patients, and coordinate transport during emergency rescues.
