Fo r o n e d ay, C o l u m b i a ’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and rules of baseball’s earliest days back to life. On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country. The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial celebration, and admission is free. T he matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. Both teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19. Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago. “Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.” More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.” The game will look familiar to

LCCD from pg 1 LCCD’s education and operations coordinator for 25 years. “The program often gives students new directions as they consider their paths forward from high school graduation. It’s our hope that an ethic of conservation sticks with them in any direction and that they take one action step, even if that’s as simple as a shorter shower to conserve water, or as involved as studying forest management to create habitat through plantings and controlled burns.” Headquartered inside the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, LCCD conducts an annual Youth Conservation School. Over the last 47 summers, LCCD’s Youth Conservation School has gotten kids outside, taught them about the importance of the environment and introduced basic conservation skills. “The program shares the definition of conservation as the wise use of natural resources to prevent waste and damage, to maintain the supply we need to survive and that of future generations,” said Gregory. “If we become careless, the future of our needs is uncertain. When we work together and see the value in caring about the amount we use, we are stewards for the future.” Nearly 20 students between the ages of 14 and 16 from school districts across Lancaster County

attended the six-day, overnight Youth Conservation School in July. The youths, who were required to leave their cell phones at home, engaged in more than 18 fun, educational activities, like fishing, critical thinking, canoeing, firearm safety, data gathering and analysis, and forestry and land use. The Youth Conservation School was instructed by employees of LCCD and officials of partnering agencies like the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The Youth Conservation School, which included field trips, was conducted at Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, 180 Forest Road, Denver. “The program is held in a camplike setting with a schoollike atmosphere,” said Gregory, a resident of Lititz. “The overnight field school includes large canvas tents with cots, with classes starting just after breakfast each morning. Lessons go into the evening with lights out at 10 p.m. The schedule is full with instruction, opportunities to see conservation careers in action and many chances to try hands-on learning.” During the half-century since it was founded, the Youth Conservation School has positively influenced the young lives of hundreds of Lancaster County teenagers.

“Each year, a new class of students meets each other on the first day, sometimes with jitters and anxieties about trying something new,” said Gregory. “By the last day, new friendships and the routine of a schedule have formed a cohesive group ready to take what they’ve learned and share with others. This one class then becomes the megaphone to help others understand why conservation is something we

all need to consider on a daily basis, to maintain the natural resources we use every day to survive.” LCCD, which was founded in 1950, employs 38 workers. LCCD’s work is broken down into five departments - data and analysis, erosion and sedimentation, agriculture, watershed, and education/ operations. That hard work will be unveiled to the public for the first time at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, when the Marching Blue Streaks will perform their 2026 field show titled “Soaring” for a home gathering of family, friends, faculty and community members at Manheim Township High School (MTHS) Stadium, 100 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. The community event is free to attend. “I’ve found how to come out of my shell more,” said Celia Peffley, an MTMB senior and drum major. “As I went through marching band, I opened up more, and that helped me with leadership skills. I’ve learned to be a more open person.”

“In my experience, I learned to be a better person,” said Ace Davis, senior band president. “I learned how to socialize better. Being in band with a bunch of kids who feel similar has been inspiring.” MTMB’s 2026 fall campaign, which officially began with the opening of band camp on Aug. 3, will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 31, at McCaskey High School’s big finale showcase. In all, the Marching Blue Streaks will perform publicly 15 times this autumn, including at every home and away football game and at its own mini-showcase event at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, at MTHS Stadium. “Ideally, our best show is going to be our last performance. There’s always room for growth,” said Ace. “I think one thing people don’t realize is how much band means to us. I don’t think people understand

I think that’s one thing that sets us apart from other activities.” “I think of band (as) like being with a sibling in a way,” said Celia. “I do better in school when marching band is happening. Marching band is just such a healthy stress environment. My grades are always best during marching band.” This year’s version of the MTMB is made up of 102 student members. The underclassmen take their cues from and look up to the upperclassmen. “A lot of it is preparing the show, but it’s also preparing us for success,” said Sophia. “Everyone is a really big part of the marching

band. There’s going to be a lot of hard work, but you always know there’s going to be someone next to you. We all make meaningful relationships and lasting memories. To find a group of like-minded people is really rare.” “Band is a big part of my life,” said Timothy. “It takes up a lot of time. But if I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t do it. That feeling of walking off the field after a good show makes it all worth it. Event to Help Families Get Ready for School Life in Christ Church, 1027 Dillerville Road, Lancaster, will host its sixth annual Back to School Blast on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church parking lot. The event is free of charge. The Back to School Blast helps Lancaster families to prepare for the upcoming school year. It also seeks to offer hope for families and wholesome fun. Backpacks and school supplies will be available free of charge while supplies last. Backpacks will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and they must be reserved at the beginning of

the event. The Back to School Blast will also include a free hot meal, games, bounce houses, face painting, and balloon art, as well as giveaway drawings for bikes, hoverboards, and gift cards. A PlayStation 5 will be the grand prize. Last year, more than 800 people attended, and more than 270 backpacks were distributed. This year, organizers hope to welcome at least 1,000 community members. Preregistration is encouraged but does not guarantee backpacks.

today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop known as “on the bound” - counts as an out. “The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said. “It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging. Even so, our players try to catch what they can on a fly, because we often play in open fields, and you never know which way a bounce will go.” The ball closely resembles today’s baseball in size, weight and firmness, meaning players must rely on technique, and sometimes tolerate some pain, to field it barehanded. Pitchers throw underhand, batters overrun first base at their own risk, and any ball that first lands inside the first- and thirdbase lines is fair, even if it later rolls into foul territory. That rule keeps the corner infielders on their toes. The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship. Janson Field, a traditional base-

ball diamond built atop the borough’s former reservoir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history. It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging percentage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The Aug. 15 doubleheader marks the fourth straight year the Keystones have included Columbia on their schedule, and once again several borough residents will take the field. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, and children will be invited onto the field to play between games. Portable restrooms will be available. People who arrive early are invited to join the players for their annual walk across Cherry Street to Mount Bethel Cemetery to pay tribute to Samuel Young, the Columbia community leader credited with bringing organized base ball to the Susquehanna Valley in the early 1860s.
