History is yesterday’s news and events. History is universal, and it’s one of the few things that’s both timeless and timely.

History is always relevant. But there are certain occasions and

milestones that provide opportunities to shine a brighter light on it.

“These 100, 200 and 250 anniversaries and celebrations, they’re just the markings of time,” said local historian Ben Webber. “We take a moment in time and celebrate those things that happened. In July of 1777, and every year

since, we celebrated Independence Day. The farther away from it we get, I think the more interesting it becomes. We no longer know what it’s like to ride in a wagon. I think it’s good to take stock of where we are today by studying history.”

Motorsports Show Marks 25 Years

“This is just a great communityand family-oriented event, and we encourage everyone to come and check it out,” said Dean Hershey, describing the LCBC Motorsports Show. “There are things for everybody to experience and fun for everyone.”

The show will be held at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free for both guests and vehicle entrants.

The LCBC Motorsports Show will feature antique cars, classics, muscle cars, tuners, motorcycles, street rods, lifted trucks and scale model cars from across the region. This year’s featured theme celebrates pickup trucks, with a dedicated showcase area highlighting everything from restored antiques to custom offroad builds.

“We are one of the largest free car shows on the East Coast,” said Hershey, show organizer. “We average around 12,000 people here, and around 1,500 to 1,800 vehicles.”

This is the 25th anniversary of the motorsports show, which began through the men’s ministry at LCBC.

“Our first show was just a couple of grills set up and probably 10 to 20 vehicles,” Hershey recalled. “It was just a fun idea we had, and it’s grown from that.”

He noted that people come from as far away as Florida to participate in the show, adding, “We’ve had people come from 10 different states.”

The show is about more than vehicles, he said. It’s about creating a place where people can come together, enjoy the day with family and friends and

Market To Support Local Community Spirit

Market means farm to table. Market means fresh. Market means shopping local.

For Venture Lititz, market means community.

“The Lititz Farmers Market is more than a place to shop; it’s a celebration of community in its purest form,” said Alyssa Diehm, administrative assistant for Venture Lititz. “You’ll see it in neighbors supporting neighbors, new friends bonding over a shared love of Chilango’s tacos and old friends catching up while their children dance to live music. It is a weekly reminder of our town’s commitment to coming together and elevating our local growers, bakers and makers.”

Venture Lititz’s Farmers Market is back with a vengeance, ready to take that community spirit to new levels this summer.

In late May, the annual local farmers market, which is being sponsored by Venture Lititz, opened for another growing season inside Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The farmers market will be staged every Thursday

from 3:30 to 7 p.m. through Oct.15.

The farmers market will not be conducted on Thursday, July 2.

“This market reflects our mission to enhance and sustain the social and economic vibrancy of our community,” said Sam Thrush, executive director of Venture Lititz. “It creates access to fresh, local food while further activating downtown Lititz in the evening hours and providing a meaningful place for people to gather, connect and truly linger longer in our downtown.”

Each Thursday, the Lititz Farmers Market will host more than 11 vendors, farmers, artisans and small business owners offering produce, prepared foods and crafts. For those local entrepreneurs, the market is a bridge, an avenue for connecting their goods with consumers.

Webber, who’s been the president of the Manheim Township Historical Society for six years, is currently presenting a talk about Revolutionary Lancaster as part of his own personal contribution to the America250 celebration. Webber’s talk focuses on what was going on in Lancaster in the 1770s and the role that the locale played in our country’s fight for independence.

“I try to set the stage for what Lancaster was like less than 50 years after it was founded,” said Webber. “We’re still in the wilderness. We’re still in the woods. We’re still clear-cutting woods. But we have really good roads, and we’re connected to Philadelphia. At that time, Lancaster is one of the oldest inland settlements in the colonies.”

“Irish dance is a traditional form of dance rooted in the Irish culture,” said

The Revolutionary War was fought between 1775 and 1783 and included the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia and the Treaty of Paris, which ended the fight. With assistance from European countries and led by General George Washington, the 13 existing colonies united to overthrow British tyranny.

Lancaster was in the middle of everything, geographically, politically and socially.

“We have a long history of answering the call,” said Webber. “There was no military fighting here. But there was a lot of squab -

bling, and there was a lot of neighbor-versus-neighbor. There were a lot of pacifists and loyalists who lived here.

“I think most people know that the Continental Congress met here on one day in September of 1777,” added Webber. “I think people know we provided a lot of stuff and we sent a lot of people. I think other things are shocking when people learn what the facts are.”

The Pennsylvania long rifle was invented and developed in Lancaster, and the locale produced 90% of the shoes worn by the soldiers of freedom. Because of its proximity to Philadelphia, Washington and Boston, Lancaster became a destination for wounded soldiers and prisoners of war.

“The Pennsylvania long rifle had unheard-of accuracy,” said Webber. “You could shoot something 250

yards away. It really did help us with guerilla warfare. When the war started and they started calling up troops, Lancaster County more than met the quota that was being asked of it. There were a lot of these incredible things that were happening in Lancaster during the revolution.”

Among Webber’s upcoming presentations of Revolutionary Lancaster are talks at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, on Thursday, June 18, at 3 p.m. and at Willow Valley Communities, 450 Willow Valley Lakes Drive, Willow Street, on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 1:30 p.m. Both talks are open to the public.

“The revolution is still happening,” said Webber. “There are revolutionary times and things still going on. People can be a part of what’s happening next. We’re all citizens, and we can all participate.”

Campers can also expect to learn collaboration, work ethic basics and fundamental social skills.

“The atmosphere of the camp will be upbeat, welcoming, encouraging and fun,” said Pujol. “We want campers to feel challenged in a positive way while also feeling supported

The camp is expected to host dancers from all over Lancaster County, as well as surrounding counties such as York, Lebanon, Chester and Dauphin. The Irish Dance summer camp is in its 10th year of existence.

“The participants are passionate young dancers who are eager to learn, improve and connect with others who share similar interests,” said Pujol, a resident of Manheim Township. “Some are highly competitive dancers, while others simply dance because they love it.”

Irish Dance presents nearly 250 performances each year, many of which are given over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The school also hosts two Irish dance competitions each year.

The Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance has performed at restaurants, schools, theaters, festivals, fairs, parades and retirement communities. Five years ago, the school established a Celtic band that features musicians from all parts of Lancaster County.

The World War II Oral History Group will meet on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m. in the ballroom at the Heritage Hotel, 500 Centerville Road, Lancaster. The program is part of the group’s “I Speak for Another” series.

The speaker will be Edyta Jacoby, daughter of World War II survivor Heinrich Jakubowicz. Heinrich was born on May 5, 1924, in Bƒôdzin, Poland, and he was 15 at the outbreak of the war. He was sent to a ghetto and then was deported and enslaved in a total of five camps, the last of which was Auschwitz. He was still at the camp when it was liberated on Jan. 27, 1945. Although Heinrich survived, his father and siblings did not. Immediately following liberation, Heinrich went to an army base in Erlangen, Germany, and from there, he came to America, where he was

known as Henry Jacoby. Edyta will share his story, along with photos of his life immediately after liberation and in the U.S.

Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories for motorcycles, model cars and other vehicles.

“Our trophies are completely unique to all car shows,” Hershey said. “They are created by one of the guys on our show team in the design of an old gas pump with the show’s specific theme vehicle on it. People that are into

car shows, they love our trophies.”

All entrants will also be eligible to win a grand prize NAPA one-of-a-kind toolbox, which will be awarded by random drawing.

The general public will have the opportunity to win grand prizes of a Hershey Antique Auto Museum package and a trailer from Keystone Trailers. People can scan a QR code on-site and choose to enter for either prize or for both.

“You’re going to see some of the coolest vehicles around,” he said. “And if you’re not as into cars, we have tons of stuff for the whole family to enjoy. Originally, this was strictly focused on car show people, but through the years, we’ve grown it and cultivated it to be a family event with lots of cool things for kids to experience.”

Annual Percussion Seminar Announced

Lancaster Bible College will host its annual weeklong intensive Total Percussion Seminar from Tuesday to Saturday, June 16 to 20. The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Good Shepherd Chapel on the college’s Lancaster campus at 901 Eden Road. The event will end with a showcase performance open to the public at 2 p.m. on June 20.

The Total Percussion Seminar is geared for middle school, high school, and college percussionists, although adult percussionists are also welcome to register and participate. Throughout the week, students will participate in clinics, master classes, and percussion ensembles as they experience hands-on learning on drumline techniques, drum set, mallet studies, concert techniques, world and hand drumming, music technology, and district audition preparation.

The guest artists and clinicians will include Brent Behrenshausen, Daniel Mark, Adam Stec, Ralph Sorrentino, Rob Robinson, David Nelson, and Gabriel Staznik.

Behrenshausen is the director of the Total Percussion Seminar and an adjunct professor at LBC.

Mark is a Total Percussion Seminar mallet percussion specialist and the percussion director of the Kutztown University marching band.

Stec is the owner of Drums Etc./The Drummer’s Pro Shop and has

been a professional in the music industry for over a decade.

Sorrentino teaches applied percussion and directs the percussion ensemble at West Chester University. He is the principal percussionist with Opera Philadelphia and a section percussionist with the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra. He is also a founding member of Electrum Duo.

Robinson is an artist with Ludwig Marching Percussion and an adjudicator for USBands. Inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame, he lives in South Florida and works as a private teacher, clinician, and composer.

Nelson is a freelance percussionist and timpanist based in the Philadelphia area and the principal timpanist of the Philly Pops and the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. He performs regularly with the Philadelphia Orchestra, serves on the faculty at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Temple University.

Staznik is a freelance percussionist, educator, and arranger residing in the Washington, D.C., area. He is the drummer in Max Impact and serves as the section chief of unit operations for the United States Air Force Band.
