When Manheim Township High School (MTHS) graduates more than 400 seniors from the Class of 2019 on Wednesday, June 5, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 6:45 p.m., three students will be prepared to address their family, friends, school staff members, and fellow classmates. Gabi Brown, the daughter of Derek and Laurie Brown of Lititz; Amir Lynch, the son of Maurice Lynch and Lonnette Stewart of Lancaster; and Hallie Mylin, the daughter Matt and Kelly Mylin of Lancaster, have each chosen a speech topic based on the theme of “A Road Trip.” Gabi’s presentation will talk about “Preparation” for a road trip. “My speech incorporates the road trip theme and what you need to pack on

Gabi noted that some comments on lack of preparation will also be included. “(I will talk about) being inadequately prepared when life throws (something unexpected) at you,” explained Gabi. At MTHS, Brown has played soccer for four years and participated in track for two years. She served as the food chair of Mini-THON and is a member of Key Club and the ski club. In the fall, she plans to attend Elizabethtown College to study business management and financial economics with plans to go into hospitality management. did,” Wood said, noting that the mission and process were solidified by meetings with mentor Eric Parker. “We will continue to utilize SCORE services because it’s an outstanding resource.” Lebanon Valley Exposition Center & Fairgrounds (LVECF) was the longest-running entity to receive an award. The organization was started in 1970, and in preparation for its next 50 years, the board of directors began developing a strategic plan and a direction for the future. Kevin St. Cyr mentored executive director Patrick Kerwin, who is LVECF’s only full-time employee, and he helped the board of directors develop mission and vision statements. “Thanks to SCORE and our strategic plan, we feel well-prepared to enter the next half-century,” Kerwin said. Millersville University (MU) president Daniel Wubah presented an award to Kurt Moon, who created STR Resources &
Associates. “One of the reasons Lancaster is a special place is because of the interconnectedness,” Wubah said, demonstrating this by giving a shout-out to Foxduck co-founder Rebecca Wood, who is studying business at MU. Wubah also announced that MU has a new initiative in process, that of developing a mentorship office reminiscent of SCORE’s work, but for students. Moon shared that SCORE mentor Hugh McMaster helped him with the practical aspects of establishing and growing a business, but McMaster also provided crucial emotional support as well. “‘You have tremendous value to bring to clients,’” Moon reported McMaster as saying. “Those examples pushed me through self-doubt.” In 1996, Leigh Lindsay inadvertently started a theater in an art studio. In 2018, that theater, Zoetropolis, moved into a new space and is in the final stages of
opening a restaurant. “We are so grateful for SCORE,” said partner Matt Hostetter. “Mentor and ‘business dad’ Lou Davenport provided us with courage to keep with our passion project and get this far.” St. Cyr, who will be the next chapter president when Bewley’s term concludes this year, presented SCORE’s first community partner award to Heather Sharpe and Katie Basile of the Duke Street Business Center. He noted that during the first meeting clients have with SCORE, they are directed to meet with Basile and learn about the center’s resources. In closing, Bewley remarked, “SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is proud to help you fulfill your vision and goals. SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon has 71 volunteer mentors who provided 2,668 mentoring sessions, along with 89 workshops and roundtables, and worked with 646 new clients in 2018. When Clint Krushinsky presented an award to Monica Rakoczy of EnterTRAINING Solutions, he said, “SCORE helps businesses improve and make them the best they can be.” Rakoczy concurred, relating a story of tragedy avoided because a worker recognized unsafe trenching from a worksite safety seminar she provided. Mentor Jerry Glenn helped Rakoczy develop her training business, and she was recently asked to speak at Con Expo in Las Vegas, which is a dream come true. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Lancaster County Office of Aging will begin distributing 2019 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible people on Wednesday, June 5. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvaniagrown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible, an individual must be at least 60 years of age, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household
income of less than $22,311 for one person or less than $30,044 for two. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. All distributions will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Wednesday, June 5, a distribution will be held at SACA Senior Center, 545 Pershing Ave., Lancaster. On Wednesday, June 12, distributions will take place at Columbia Senior Center, 510 Walnut St., Columbia (717-6844850); Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. Poplar St.,

Libraries Post Summer Plans Public libraries of Lancaster County and the Bookmobile will present this year’s Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories.” The 2019 countywide reading program will begin on Saturday, June 1, and run until Saturday, Aug. 10. Hirsh Will Perform Lester Hirsh will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 1. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m. Hirsh is a guitarist, singer/songwriter, and poet. On Spanish six-string and acoustic 12-string guitars, he plays classical, country, folk, Brazilian jazz, and Flamenco. His repertoire includes original compositions and standards performed with guitar and harmonica. In addition to performing as a solo artist, Lester has performed in a variety of ensembles, including folk trio Side Three, folk pop trio Jerusalem, and duo Sweet River.
His albums and compilations include “Part and Parcel,” “Piper’s Dream,” “Whistle in the Wind,” “Tales of a Troubadour,” “Sweet Surrender,” “Strangers and Lonesome Friends,” “Lester Hirsh Live at the Coffee and Tea Room,” and “River of Strings,” along with two spoken word CDs. In 1997, Hirsh was a finalist in the Napa Valley, Calif., Emerging Songwriter Contest, and in June 2000, he performed on Michael Johnathon’s “Woodsong Old Time Radio Hour.” In addition to Hirsh’s music career, from 1988 through 2002, he was publisher and editor of Bone and Flesh literary
magazine. His poems have been published in various periodicals, and he published a book, “Mosaic II, Poems of an Ancient Order.” Hirsh performs for special needs audiences, as part of artist-in-school residencies, and at numerous concert venues. He teaches poetry as well as guitar workshops in community education settings. He is a member of various arts organizations. Admission is free. Bowling Fundraiser To Benefit Organization On Saturday, June 8, will be a “Bowling With the Birds” benefit event at the new Decades, 438 N. Queen St., Lancaster. It will help support Ryder’s Smile Packages, started by Ryder Getchis, a 12-year-old Manheim Township School District student who was diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago but is currently cancer-free. Jalen Mills of the Philadelphia Eagles will be one of several guests to appear to help Ryder raise money for his campaign to
place care packages in pillow cases and deliver them to Lancaster children fighting their own battle with cancer. A Fete d’Or is planned for Thursday, June 13, to celebrate Lancaster city’s official recognition as an “age-friendly” city. The Lancaster Downtowners, working with the city, will hold the catered event in the Atrium of the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 6 to 9 p.m. The gold-themed event will feature food from a local eatery, a themed dessert by a local candy business, and beverages. The Rue de la Pompe will provide music, and the mayor of Lancaster will address the attendees. Township Lacrosse Teams Play in District Finals by Ara Grigorian
Manheim Township’s boys’ lacrosse team earned a trip to the PIAA, Class 3A state playoffs as it reached the District Three 3A championship game, played on Thursday night at Central Dauphin Middle School. The Blue Streaks, however, will enter the state playoffs as the second seed from the district. Palmyra eked out an 8-7 victory. When looking at a game with a one-goal margin of victory, the box

Program To Spotlight Local Inventor On Thursday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., “Remembering Inventor-Machinist Chester Ruth and Celebrating the Cradle of Tolerance and Diversity in Southeastern Pennsylvania” will take place at Landis Valley Christian Fellowship, 2420 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster. Gwendolyn M. Ruth Dickinson will share a presentation on her recollection of her grandfather, William Chester Ruth, as a creative mechanic and spiritual and family leader. The presentation will be followed by a light lunch and then a talk by Dr. Leroy Hopkins, retired Millersville
University professor. Hopkins will present historical context for the Lancaster and Chester county area as a place of tolerance and opportunity. Born in Chester County, Ruth moved by the early 20th century to Gap, where he had a blacksmith and machine shop. The son of a South Carolina slave, he was by the early 1920s a wellknown and capable blacksmith to Amish, Mennonite, and other farm families of eastern Lancaster and western Chester counties. His genius for solving mechanical problems led him to design and patent a machine
feeder used between the thresher and straw baler, a cinderspreading truck, self-raising elevator, and other machines. He also followed in his father’s footsteps as a lay leader of his church. Hopkins will talk about the Underground Railroad and displaced African-Americans, Quaker ethics and abolitionism, and Pennsylvania German agricultural and work craft technology, and he will suggest how the interplay made this region of the state a continuing success of William Penn’s experiment. After the speakers’
presentations, Bruce Bomberger, curator, will be available at the permanent agricultural exhibit in the Bitzer Building at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road off Oregon Pike, Lancaster, to interpret and answer questions about machinery built by Ruth that is on display. Notable songs from the musical include “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” and “On the Street Where You Live.” Franklin & Marshall College theater production manager Bonnie Bosso is once again serving as the director; she previously directed “Sherlock Holmes” for SSC. Kendra Bigley is the musical director. Bigley won a Broadway World award for her musical direction of SSC’s recent production of “Titanic.” The two directors are excited to be working on this latest show. “‘My Fair Lady’ is such an iconic piece in the realm of musical theater, and, of course, many people have seen the movie.
I feel humbled - and a bit awed to work on it,” Bosso remarked. “Our goal is to create a piece that fulfills the expectations of the audience while still bringing a freshness to it whenever we can.” The production is fully staged with a cast of 25 local performers and a 12-piece orchestra. The lead roles of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins are played by SSC veterans Leslie Talley and Chris Wert, respectively. Talley previously appeared as Meg in SSC’s production of “Little Women,” and she has portrayed biblical characters Eve and Mary at Sight & Sound Theatres. Wert acted in SSC’s “Sherlock Holmes” and directed SSC’s “Around the World in 80 Days.” “I am always thrilled to be asked to direct a Servant Stage show, and I love the people who perform for them,” Bosso said. “The process of mounting a show at Servant Stage feels like walking into a room of old friends. Most especially, I think its mission statement rocks, and I am glad for the chance to support it.” In keeping with SSC’s mission

they were amazing,” he said. Mueller added that Upohar will be new to the venue this year. “They will be selling global cuisine and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free food,” he said. Other new trucks at the event will sell vegetarian pasta meals, Asian meatball sliders, Key West tacos with shrimp, old-fashioned barbecue with smoked meats, sweet and savory waffle items and sandwiches, and shrimp, oyster, and crab items and pierogies. On the sweet side will be trucks selling hand-dipped ice cream treats, kettle corn, creative cotton candy treats, Southern-style bakery items, cupcakes, and cannoli. For entertainment, organizers have engaged two live bands to return to perform. “Ink Vault will play cover songs from famous artists such as Dave Matthews,” said Mueller, who added that the band has a bluegrass feel and will play familiar songs from the
1970s through the present day. Local singer and songwriter Mark DeRose will also perform. Because many of the 2,000 attendees at last year’s fest brought along their dogs, ODC has asked the Lancaster SPCA to be on-site with puppies for adoption, and organizers hope to have a vendor selling pet items join in for the day. “We are partnering with Manheim Township Recreation Commission for this event,” noted Mueller, who added that a Touch-A-Truck event, which was part of the 2018 fest, will also be held. “We will have a police car, a fire engine, an ambulance, and some big earth-moving equipment children can tour and climb on,” he said. The Thaddeus Stevens STEM truck will be at the event with a robot to demonstrate, and the ODC Auxiliary will hold a plant sale, featuring hanging plants, in the park. “ We will have face
painting and caricature drawing,” added Mueller. Additionally, a mobile bike shop will be on-site with information on bike safety and local trails to ride. Prizes and giveaways will be a focus of this year’s fest, and Mueller said that ODC has received many donations of items from local area businesses. “We will have a new bicycle, a couple of bags of items from a local dental office, (and) hair care products, and we will have restaurant gift cards,” said Mueller, who also listed family passes to the Overlook pool and a round of golf among the prizes. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. Hallie’s address will discuss “Reflecting and Looking Forward.” “(I will) focus on not dwelling on the past, but (rather) using the past to motivate you to move forward,” she said, adding that she will also talk about reflecting on the past before making choices for the future. At school, Hallie has been a member of National Honor Society and has served as both attendance and public relations officer for Student Council. She has run with the cross-country team for four years, and she plays flute in the concert band. In the fall, Hallie plans to attend Liberty University
in Lynchburg, Va., where she will major in elementary education in hopes of becoming a teacher. Reflecting on matriculating at MTHS, each of the three students found reasons to appreciate the experience. “I am glad I attended MTHS because I know I will be prepared for college and my future in the real world,” noted Hallie, while Gabi said that the relationships she has built with her peers and school faculty members stood out. Amir agreed, saying, “I am grateful for all the great people I have met at MTHS who have helped me to become a better person.”

Asked about the atmosphere at the annual Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) benefit auction, Jennifer Samara, director of elementary education at the school, noted that the student reaction to the event stands out to her. “The students love it,� said Samara. Auction organizer Karen Burkholder added that people of all ages enjoy the event. “The day is like a big, fun family reunion with lots of food, meeting friends, and working together to raise money for an awesome school,� she said. The 2019 auction will be held on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, at LAMS, 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz. The auction will kick off at 4 p.m. on May 31 with the traditional Down Home Dinner, which will include a choice of roast beef or chicken, gourmet cheesy potatoes, green beans, fruit, a dinner roll with butter, and a whoopie pie for dessert. The dinner will be served
until 7 p.m. Takeout meals will be available along with the eat-in option. Auctions on May 31 will include a student auction, which will begin at 5:45 p.m., and the main auction, which will begin at 6:15 p.m. A selection of theme baskets will go over the block at 7:30 p.m., and gift certificates will be sold at 8 p.m. On June 1, an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast featuring eggs, sausage, pancakes, baked oatmeal, home fries, fresh fruit, pastries, juice, milk, and coffee will be available for purchase beginning at 6 a.m. Breakfast will be served until 9:30 a.m., at which time barbecued chicken legs and thighs will be sold. The chicken barbecue will continue until 1:30 p.m. or until the chicken is sold out. Some of the other food items that will be available for purchase are pork barbecue sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, salad, baked goods, and softserve ice cream. Two separate auctions will begin at 8:30 a.m. on June 1. The
general auction will be held inside the school, and the landscape auction, which will feature a variety of plants and flowers, will be held outside under a tent. At 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the general auction will feature theme baskets, and at 11 a.m., a men’s auction, including hunting and fishing gear, archery equipment, and brand-name coffee mugs, will take place on the main stage. At noon, the special features auction will commence. For 2019, this auction will focus on experiences, such as courtside tickets to Philadelphia Sixers games, 10-yard-line tickets to an Eagles game, and Josh Groban concert tickets. A push mower and a brand-name grill will also be auctioned. At 2:15 p.m., class projects will be auctioned. Classes have donated a mini cornhole set, an outdoor chess game, and a Lego table. LAMS currently serves students from prekindergarten through 10th grade. The school’s
mission is to partner with Christian families to provide a safe and nurturing environment that encourages personal freedom and individual expression. LAMS is accredited by the Commission on Elementary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International and the Mid-Atlantic Christian Schools Association. Burkholder said that the school hopes to raise $140,000 at this year’s auction. Benefit Concert To Aid Community Center A benefit concert for the Crispus Attucks Community Center will be held on Sunday, June 2, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Imani Edu-Tainers is a not-forprofit organization that was founded in 1992 by Sonya MannMcFarlane in Chapel Hill, N.C. She relocated to Lancaster in 1993 and continues to promote community awareness, appreciation, and understanding of African culture.
Imani provides dance and drumming classes for children, youths, and adults as well as cultural enrichment programming throughout Lancaster. The performing company supported by the organization has received rave reviews for performances throughout the area and beyond. LCDS Presents “Twelfth Night” Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) students presented Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” on April 25 to 27. The show was directed by Kristin Wolanin. The production was set in the 1920s, the era of Art Deco and women’s suffrage,
and had a sparse, Bourbon Street-inspired set. The the show used the 1920s setting because it offered the cast - all students in the yearlong Shakespeare course - a way to engage with the material in a way they otherwise would not.
Devin Groff, roadmaster for Lancaster Township, recently graduated from the PSATS Municipal Government Academy (PMGA), a leadership and municipal education program of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors (PSATS). The 2019 class of PMGA graduates received diplomas and certificates of completion on April 15 during the township association’s annual Educational Conference in Hershey. According to PSATS executive director David Sanko, PSATS structured the academy to give participants practical information they can use in their positions. PMGA participants earn primary, secondary, and elective credits by attending classroom workshops and webinars and other PSATS educational opportunities, such as the annual Educational Conference, Human Resources and Labor Management Institute, Boot Camp for Township
Officials, and Grassroots Advocacy Day. In this year’s graduating class, 10 individuals, including Groff, completed the diploma program by earning 60 credits from across four tracks - administration, planning and zoning, public safety, and public works. The Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association. More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action
to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on hearthealthy eating tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed
her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15 years of volunteer service. The event, hosted by radio personality Lisa Landis-Blowers, also included a silent auction, a mini manicure station provided by the Lancaster School of

Resurrection Catholic School students were recently honored in AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 19’s annual AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Americanism poster and essay contests for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Lynn Peters, the author of “Brownie and Bo at the Big Wood Diner,” read her book to firstand secondgraders. Students had the opportunity to “fish” and also discussed ways to keep local waters clean. Peters also met with the fourth-grade students to discuss her writing process and explain how she became an author. Peters, who began her career as a nurse, became interested in writing when she started creating Christmas books for her own children. It took more than two years to complete her published book. June MT School Board Meetings The June School Board Work Session will be held on Thursday, June 13th at 7:00 pm in the District Office. The June School Board Voting Meeting will be held on Thursday, June 20th at 7:00 pm at the District Office. Agendas are posted on the website the week of the meetings.
