Special Olympics Explores Pure Nature of Sports

Some of its offerings aren’t exactly what one might consider traditional Olympic sports. But what makes Special Olympics so special is that it unlocks potential, it explores the therapeutic nature of athletics, and it enhances lives.

“My favorite part is watching the growth of athletes as people,” said Lynn Lopez, a team lead for Special Olympics Lancaster.

“Not just as athletes, but as individuals,” said Anne Phillips, a sports team leader for Special Olympics Lancaster. “I have one particular athlete who was shy and reserved, and now he’s not afraid to speak with anybody. He’s developed quite a bit of confidence.”

Special Olympics Lancaster uses sports to serve local residents with intellectual disabilities and delayed development issues. Athletes are mentored by coaches, learn the finer points of sports and are

afforded opportunities to interact with peers and other members of the community.

Those opportunities that Special

Olympics Lancaster provide are free to participants and their families.

Healing Is the Point of Acupuncture

It’s natural, nontraditional and minimally invasive. It uses tiny pains with the goal to lessen, treat and even cure big pains.

But perhaps the most important element to know about acupuncture is that it aims to unlock the sometimes-underestimated strength of the body’s own healing powers.

“The body itself is pretty incredible. The body is very smart,” said Dr. Ashley LeClair, a Pennsylvania licensed acupuncturist who operates Lititz Acupuncture, 1555 Highlands Drive, Suite 103, Lititz, with her husband, Dr. John Marino. “We meet the patient where they are to help them feel better when they walk out of here.”

The physical act of acupuncture involves inserting between four

Empathy and empowerment. Care management and case management. Life-skill training and independence promotion.

United Disabilities Services (UDS) does work worth celebrating.

“UDS serves with a lot of programs, and one of the most visible is service dogs,” said Angela Trout, the annual gifts and events officer for UDS. “Many people come to us through service dogs. Our mission is enhancing abilities and changing lives. We help people gain independence and help people stay in their homes longer. Some of our programs are expensive to run because we provide quality services to our clients. It’s important to support the work we do.”

UDS Foundation, the fundraising arm of UDS, will present this year’s edition of its annual gala from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the Marriott Lancaster Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. While it is UDS’ largest fundraising event, the festive gala will celebrate the organization’s 61st anniversary and serve as community outreach for what UDS does and what it’s all about.

UDS is headquartered at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster.

“A gala is a grand celebration,” said Trout. “It’s more than a cocktail party. It is a fundraising event, but it’s elevated. It’s somewhat elegant, but not stuffy. Our gala ties in our mission to reinforce why visitors are there.

not maintain a brick-andmortar office space, but its management team meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at Keystone Custom Homes, 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster.

“Many times, after high

school, our athletes don’t have ways to enjoy sports,” said Phillips. “We’re able to bring joy to the athletes and their families. They’re able to compete with peers. That’s important, mentally, physically and socially.”

“We want to extend an opportunity to everyone to try a sport maybe they haven’t tried before,” said Lopez.

The sports offered by Special Olympics Lancaster are seasonal and correspond to those offered by

Special Olympics Pennsylvania. Softball is offered in the summer season, which runs from June through August, while the fall season features volleyball, bocce, power lifting and long-distance walking/ running. Special Olympics

Lancaster’s winter season offers bowling and snow shoeing, and the spring season includes swimming, basketball and tennis.

Seasons consist of learning, practicing and competing on the local, area and state levels. Special Olympics Lancaster utilizes athletic venues at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster Bible College, Lititz recCenter, John Beck Elementary School in the Warwick School District and YMCA of the Roses in the city.

“These are people who love playing sports for the true love of it,” said Lopez. “They are doing everything they can to compete at the level they’re at. They’re going to do their best.”

Special Olympics Lancaster benefits from the contributions of about 40 volunteers. Because of safety guidelines, Special Olympics Lancaster maintains a one-to-four coachto-athlete ratio, and there are currently waiting lists for athletes in some sports.

“(Athletes) develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship,” said Lopez, a resident of Manheim Township. “The soft skills are steps toward independence. The social skills are interactions with others outside of their families.”

Right now, Special Olympics Lancaster is seeking volunteer coaches for its summer softball season.

SOUP & SALADS

“It often helps parents,” said Phillips, a resident of Manheim borough. “Some parents are feeling very alone and they learn information like, ‘My athlete does that too.’ It’s helpful for parents as well as the athletes. Some parents think their children couldn’t do anything, and they’re finding out they can play the sports they love.”

Currently, about 165 individuals are registered across Special Olympics Lancaster programs. They’re Lancaster County residents between the ages of 8 and 60.

“They are people. They are to be respected just like anyone else,” said Phillips. “For some, it’s social. But we have many serious, competitive athletes. Some are even elite athletes. They train year-round.”

“The name ‘Special Olympics’ is as popular as Coca-Cola,” said Lopez. “We’re one of the most recognizable brand names. But do people understand who we are? No, not always. Some people think it’s a oneday or two-day function. We are that program targeting people with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. We’re much bigger than people think we are.”

Special Olympics was established in Lancaster in 1975. There are more than 50 active Special Olympics programs across Pennsylvania.

“We’re giving athletes a place to fit in, be competitive and learn a sport,” said Phillips. “We need volunteers. We train volunteers. We could be so much bigger and meet so many more needs of the people of Lancaster County.”

and 12 thin needles - about three hairs in diameter - into a relaxed patient in an inclined position. Sometimes the needles are inserted into the areas being treated, and other times they are inserted in different parts of the body.

The regularity and frequency of the treatments are important. LeClair’s acupuncture sessions last between 45 minutes and an hour and can be administered once a week for periods of four to 12 weeks.

“After a long intake, conversation and a pattern diagnosis, we choose the points and have the patient in a position where they’re comfortable,” said LeClair. “We want you to relax as best you can. We have to create points that help that purpose in that moment. It’s detailed to every individual. The pain doesn’t last; once the needle is placed, it doesn’t hurt.”

ture is used for pain,” said LeClair, a resident of East Petersburg. “The pain can be external, the pain can be from trauma or the pain can be from the overuse of muscles. It’s not just one type of ailment; it’s anything and everything. We don’t treat cancer, but we help people get through cancer.”

“I have seen people walk out and be totally different,” continued LeClair. “I have seen patients trying to figure out what’s going on and using acupuncture. I’ve used acupuncture on patients for fertility. (Our bodies are) constantly changing and growing older.”

LeClair became a licensed acupuncturist in 2022 after experiencing the benefits of acupuncture firsthand.

Garden Club to Meet

The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet on Thursday, April 23, at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster.

Sarah Mann, the owner of Serendipity Flower Farms, will present details about her favorite flowers that are suited for cut arrangements.

She will share factors to consider in planning a garden to grow cut flowers and will demonstrate how to design a colorful arrangement. An attendee will receive her artistic arrangement to take home.

“Pain isn’t our enemy; it’s your friend,” said LeClair. “It’s a signal from the body, ‘Hey, something’s off.’ You have to befriend it to observe it.”

Acupuncture is used to treat a wide assortment of ailments, everything from chronic back pain, chronic neck pain and chronic shoulder pain to Lyme disease, nausea and arthritis and from stress, insomnia and headaches to inflammation, anxiety and depression. Acupuncture can also be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment.

“I broke my jaw, and it went undiagnosed,” LeClair said. “Nothing was helping, so I tried acupuncture. It didn’t fix me, but it relieved the pain. The reason I went for my degree is because of how much acupuncture helped me. I wanted to help, and it put me in tune with my body.”

Acupuncture is a form of medicine rooted in Asian culture and dating back nearly 2,500 years. But relatively speaking, acupuncture is a fairly recent medical development in the United States, having been informally introduced here in the early 1970s.

“I would encourage people to ask more questions or try it out,” LeClair said.

Allegro Orchestra’s Nextgen Youth Music program has opened registration for auditions for the high school Overture and Allegretto ensembles for the 2026-27 season.

Overture is a full symphonic orchestra for students in grades eight through 12. Allegro Nextgen aims to develop a love of the creative endeavor through exceptional, positive rehearsal and performance opportunities of varied, high-quality repertoire, with a wide range of performance ensembles. These musical opportunities are unique and designed to enhance what the students can learn in their normal scholastic musical experiences.

The Allegretto Chamber Orchestra is Nextgen’s premier ensemble for advanced students in grades eight through 12. Allegretto demands the utmost musicianship and professionalism of students in a chamber orchestra setting. Students in this ensemble receive guidance and instruction to perform standard repertoire and newly composed orchestral music. Allegretto is under the direction of founding conductor Brian Norcross and assistant conductor Francis Caravella.

They are the champions of what we do.”

That evening of April 30th will begin with mingling and hors d’oeuvres, and dinner will be served around 6 p.m. The event will include testimonials from UDS clients and volunteers.

WGAL’s Michael Fuller and Philadelphia Eagles insider Dave Spadaro will be the masters of ceremonies for the gala, but the highlight of the evening will be an appearance by personable Phillies legend John Kruk. Amid a fireside chat setting, Spadaro will interview Kruk, who is expected to spin his entertaining trademark yarns, share career highlights and relay accounts of personal challenges.

“The atmosphere is electric,” said Trout, a resident of Akron. “People are so excited to be there. It’s a really fun vibe. It’s a very welcoming and interesting experience. In Lancaster, we don’t get a lot of opportunities to see big Philly sports stars. There’s a huge Eagles fanbase here.”

The UDS gala will also include live and silent auctions featuring entertainment packages, trips, experiences, donations from Eagles stars Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts and an autographed football from Eagles lineman Lane Johnson. All of the auction items can be viewed at https://ud services.org.

“The gala has definitely grown over the years,” said Trout. “It has brought in so many new donors. The goal is to meet new people. Some people are still discovering who we are and what we do. We try to keep them involved throughout the year, and many times they become friends.”

Nearly 500 supporters, clients and their friends and families, volunteers and community members are expected to attend the UDS gala. The local nonprofit has secured the support - financial and otherwise - of 45 sponsors.

“A large majority of guests are from Lancaster County, and some come with our sponsors,” said Trout. “They’re people who know us very well. We

Church Plans Basement Sale

Bethany Presbyterian Church, 25 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, will hold its annual spring basement sale on Saturday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Event officials are hoping this year’s UDS gala will raise $300,000.

“We have 15 programs at UDS, and we serve over 15,000 people in 52 counties in Pennsylvania,” said Trout. “The money will go toward supporting those programs.”

The sale will feature two rooms full of vintage collectibles, garden items, plants, household goods, linens, glassware, tools, toys, games, puzzles, books, and baskets. Camping equipment will also be available, including a tent, chairs, a folding table, a stove, coolers, and a portable shower.

Food will be available

Founded in 1965, UDS serves individuals 18 and older with physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as elderly adults. UDS employs nearly 400 workers, many of whom either reside or work in Lancaster.

In addition to receiving program-specific state funding, UDS also conducts a fundraising golf outing at Conestoga Country Club - this year on Thursday, Sept. 17 - a bingo event for service dog funding at Lancaster Farm and Home Center in March, and quarterly lunch and learn tours.

“Fundraising is a very important part of how we operate,” said Trout. “It’s really about supporting people. When you have loved ones with needs, sometimes you just don’t know where to take them.

We do provide in-home services. We want to provide people with the help they need.”

for purchase to eat on-site or for takeout, including baked goods, hot dogs, hamburger barbecue, and chicken corn soup.

Proceeds will benefit Boy Scout Troop 4, which the church has sponsored for more than 50 years.

Attendees should enter the sale area through the front stairs or via the handicapped-accessible ramp at the back of the building. Parking is available at the rear of the building.
