It’s good, clean family fun. It’s problem solving. It’s a local expedition. It’s one of the most creative fundraisers you’ll ever run across.

Adam Zurn calls it Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. It’s his vision, his brainchild. “It’s a little bit like ‘National Treasure’ meets Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Zurn. “I’m a child of the ‘80s and I grew up on films. I thought it See Treasure hunt pg 6

Yeah, it’s a competition, not a pageant. And sure, she’d really like to win it. But the most important thing is the platform, because that’s what allows for a greater sharing of the message. Lancaster Township resident Kristen Hertzog will participate in the upcoming Mrs. Pennsylvania America competition. She’s using it as a way to promote

her work for the education and gainful employment of underserved individuals, both here and abroad. “I would like to win because then I get to expand my reach, my platform for bringing about greater access to education and employment to the underserved and the underempowered,” said Hertzog, who’s currently the reigning Mrs. Lancaster, Pennsylvania. “For 30 years, my heart has been with the people of Haiti,

e els , sne a ke rs , d res s shoes, boots, flats. All kinds of footwear. Eve Kirchner likes shoes just as much as the next young person. But recently the Manheim Township resident developed a new and deeper appreciation for them. Industrious Eve is waging her own personal shoe drive. It’s a mission whose nature is altruistic on a couple of different levels. “This involves a lot of work, and she’s learning responsibility in general,” said Antonella Kirchner, Eve’s mom. “When we heard about helping people around the world needing shoes, it struck at both of our hearts. That’s a big part of it. But it also involves a lot of organization. It’s almost like she’s had to learn how to run a small business. If we don’t keep up with it, it can be overwhelming.” A homeschooled seventh-grader, Eve is collecting gently used shoes as part of a project that will raise money for a Girl Scout trip to Hawaii, where she and other members of Troop 70674 - which meets at Grandview Church, 888 Pleasure Road, Lancaster - will perform more service projects. Eve’s collected shoes will go to Funds2Orgs, an international organization that supports small businesses by providing gently used shoes to sell. “If I do this, I get to go to Hawaii, and that’s definitely a pro,” said Eve. “But we need people’s help to spread the word, just getting people to know about it. We need help to be able to reach our goal. We need the community to be part of our mission.” Eve is employing a few different methods to collect the shoes.
