LWA Deploys Huey in Honor of Veterans

Helicopters have always been difference-makers.

On the multilayered battlefields of Vietnam in the 1960s, the versatile Bell UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” helicopter made a difference. Now, 60 years later here at home, one particular Huey is again making a difference, especially in the lives of veterans.

“The UH-1 was like the jeep in the second World War,” said Martin Kleiner, the mission coordinator for Liberty Warbird Association, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting memories associated with the Huey helicopter. “It was a utility vehicle, and it did just about everything. It served three roles, as a troop carrier, a medical evacuation helicopter and a gunship, depending upon the model and how you deployed it.”

More of an organization than a club, the Liberty Warbird Association (LWA) preserves, maintains and deploys a 1967 Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, affectionately dubbed Huey 823. LWA houses its Huey 823 in a hangar in Suite T at

the Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz, where it also maintains an office and from which it flies missions.

Members of LWA gather on Saturdays at Lancaster Airport to work on and maintain the aircraft.

About 25 years ago, Joan Schaum learned about Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, through her employer, and she joined a team. She didn’t know that the organization would touch her personally in the future.

Years later, her mother-in-law, Jackie Immel, moved in with Joan and her husband, Jeffrey, to their home in Columbia. While living with the Schaums, Immel was diagnosed with several types of cancer.

The Schaums took Immel to the Lancaster Relay For Life, which was then a 24-hour event focused on walking laps around a track to raise funds for cancer research.

“She loved walking around the track,” Joan recalled. “When she couldn’t walk around the track anymore for the survivor lap, we put her in a wheelchair and pushed her around the track. She thought it was awesome that all these people were clapping for her and cheering her on, and she had no idea who they were.”

Tait “Papa Tater” Harbaugh and Michelle Harbaugh have been married for 24 years. They share experiences, they share beliefs, they share a life.

Papa Tater is proud of his wife and what she has accomplished as director of Steps to Success, and one of the ways he supports her is nothing short of magical.

“(Michelle) is my dream come

true,” said Papa Tater. “Helping her is a big part of this. I want to make her happy. I love what she’s doing with Steps (to Success). I love magic. I love the magic community. It’s done so much for both of us. We hope (the upcoming event) is a positive for everyone.”

Above all else, the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet and Sale is Papa Tater’s initiative to support Michelle and her local nonprofit, Steps to Success. But it’s also his

In 2016, Immel passed away from kidney failure. The loss prompted the Schaums to take action in Immel’s memory.

“We thought it would be nice to honor her, and she liked the Relay so much, we decided to start our own team,” Jeffrey said.

Recalling how much his mom liked the survivors’ dinner part of Relay For Life, he had an idea.

“We thought, ‘Why don’t we start a survivor breakfast?’” Jeffrey said. “Growing up, any time we had big events, my mom cooked. We thought, ‘What a great way to honor her by cooking for the cancer survivors and

Program to Present FlowerGrowing Research

Penn State Extension will host a webinar titled “Cut Flower On-Farm Research Update” on Monday, March 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. This event is designed for farmers of cut flowers, specialty crop producers, Extension educators and agricultural researchers.

The event will feature horticulture Extension educators Margaret Pickoff and Glen Bupp, joined by Jennie Love of Love ‘N Fresh Flowers in Philadelphia, sharing insights from the project “Assessing the Use of Farm-Made Foliar Biostimulants and Microbial Inoculants for Cut Flower

Production.” The project was funded by Northeast SARE, part of the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program. Webinar participants will learn how the flower project was developed, how to collect meaningful data on a working farm and how growers can partner with the Extension to advance research-based strategies for cut flower production. The event is free of charge, but space is limited and preregistration is required. To register, visit https://extension.psu. edu/ and search for “Cut Flower On-Farm Research Update.”

their caregivers.’”

They named their team

The Breakfast Crew, and they served their first meal of pancakes, baked goods, meats and more in the tent at the Relay For Life site at Conestoga Valley High School.

“We were hoping we could bring in people who couldn’t come for the Friday night meal,” Jeffrey said, noting that at the time, Relay For Life took place from Friday to Saturday.

The Breakfast Crew features about 20 members, all from Joan and Jeffrey’s family.

“My brothers and sister help, and Joan’s family jumped right in, too,” Jeffrey said.

Over the years, the group has served hundreds of people, providing upwards of 150 servings at each meal.

“He never does anything little,” Joan said with affection toward her husband. “He was feeding the Relay For Life workers, the EMS people on-site, anybody walking the track.”

After the pandemic, the format for Relay For Life changed. It became a one-day event that takes place in the afternoon and evening, negating the need for a breakfast, but the Schaums continued to serve the cause.

“The organizers asked us

if we’d like to do a dinner instead, so we did,” Jeffrey said. “Last year, we made chicken potpie. This year, we’re doing homemade chicken corn soup and vegetable beef soup.”

They still call their team

The Breakfast Crew, even though they are now serving dinner, and their contributions have extended beyond Relay day.

Each February, they help to host Taste of Relay, a potluck-style dinner for cancer survivors and their caregivers. During the Christmas season, they organize a Breakfast with Santa event.

On Saturday, March 28, they’ll host breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the Easter Egg Hunt, Breakfast & Spring Vendor Market. The event is open to the public and will take place at the Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Doors will open at 8:45 a.m., and the event will run until noon. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/4aUSP6V.

“Everything is donated for the meals we provide,” Joan said. “We don’t charge Relay for anything. Our family members all help out, even if they can’t be there the day of the meal. They’ll make something or donate something.”

The Schaums encourage others to get involved

in Relay For Life, noting that the organization has numerous ways for people to volunteer, including helping with setup or cleanup at the Relay or volunteering with other activities throughout the year.

Although they didn’t realize how big a part Relay For Life would play in their lives when Joan joined that first team decades ago, they both say they can’t imagine not being involved with the cause.

Both emphasize how positive Relay For Life is, focusing on optimism and joy.

“It’s not a morbid event. It’s a celebration,” Joan said. “It’s about the mission to celebrate life, remember loved ones, fight back and offer hope.”

Both Joan and Jeffrey agree that tackling a cause like eradicating cancer is an overwhelming task, but they believe that everyone can make an impact.

way of assisting local kids.

The 12th edition of the annual Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet and Sale, sort of an amped-up yard sale geared toward magicians, entertainers and those who love them, will be staged from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, inside the gymnasium of Zion Lutheran Church, Steps to Success’ home at 18 Quarry Road, Leola. The unique fundraising event is free to attend, and freewill offerings for Steps to Success - which provides child care and early educationwill be accepted.

“It’s energetic,” said Papa Tater, the event’s official coordinator. “A lot of time, I’m feeling joy. These magicians are friends. There’s all this magic to look at. It can be very electric. A lot of

people seem to understand that they’re helping a nonprofit child care.”

“It just seems like a blend of our passions,” said Michelle.

Some 100 professional and semiprofessional magicians and entertainers from five states are expected to attend the event, and the swap meet and sale will feature 40 tables overflowing with tricks, games, illusions, props, slights of hand and sight gags. The fundraiser will also include a concession stand stocked with beef hot dogs, sloppy joes, black bean chili, assorted snacks, coffee, water and soft drinks.

“Even if you’re there to look, it’s fun,” said Papa Tater. “There will be thousands of tricks and props, everything from beginner’s

magic to stage illusions. Every year there is something I never knew existed or something I never thought I’d see in person. There are no performances, no scheduled events. But if you ask, someone will do a trick. We’re also trying to expand the awareness of magic and encourage new magicians.”

“There are some people who come for the social aspect,” continued Papa Tater. “We get a lot of magicians who are looking for certain types of magic. Some people collect magic. There are very few magic shops anymore, and we get such a big variety of things.”

Last year, the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet and Sale took in about $1,200 for Steps to Success. Since its inception in 2015, the convention has raised nearly $10,000 for the local nonprofit.

This year, the raised funds will go toward improvements in educational and child care services for kids.

“I really enjoy the feeling that this is a positive in the magic community,” said Papa Tater. “Almost everyone there is saying

every year, ‘You’re doing this again, right?’ Every year the child care center makes more than it did the year before.”

One of the magicians’ most common tricks involves accumulating treasure.

“With magic, there are thousands of tricks I could buy,” said Papa Tater. “When I first started, I was buying everything I had interest in. I realized there were other magicians who had the same issues. We realized this would be a fun event to do, that it could be a fundraiser and that Steps to Success could benefit. Now we’ve been doing it 11 years, and it’s kind of gotten into my blood.”

Founded by Michelle in 1995, Steps to Success is funded through private pay, subsidies from the state, fundraisers and donations. Steps to Success serves about 280 children from six weeks to 12 years old and employs nearly 50 staff members.

Photo submissions should illustrate the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, as well as the plants, animals, and people relying on it. Images depicting water, wildlife, recreation, farms, and flora will be considered.

In last year’s Save the Bay Photo Contest, the photograph “River’s Bend”

The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 27. Photos will be narrowed down by a CBF panel based on subject matter, composition, focus, lighting, uniqueness, and impact. Members of the public will then be able to vote for their favorite image in the Viewer’s Choice Gallery from Monday, April 6, to Friday, April 24.

Winners will receive a one-year CBF membership and a cash prize. Winning photographs will also be featured on CBF’s website, social media, 2027 calen -

Those gatherings are open to the public, but rides on the helicopter aren’t offered.

“It is absolutely open to the public and we encourage people to come out to the hangar, see the aircraft and talk to the people who maintain it,” said Kleiner. “Any time we are at the hangar, you can do that. For any veteran or veteran group, we can set up a special private visit to the hangar.”

LWA’s purpose and reason for existing is just that - to honor veterans, especially from the Vietnam era, and educate others on the role that the Huey played in that war. LWA accomplishes its mission by flying to and attending activities designed to recognize veterans.

Each year, LWA flies Huey 823 to the Lebanon VA Medical Center to honor veterans receiving treatment there and their caregivers.

“When Vietnam veterans came home from the war, they didn’t get a lot of respect,” he continued.

“We want them to get that honor and respect they deserve. We want to restore the pride of all veterans, but especially the Vietnam veterans. When people come out and see it, it takes them back. If you’ve ever been around a Huey, it has a very distinct sound, and you can smell the burning of jet fuel. When people can relate to it, it makes a big difference.”

There are about 40 active volunteers involved with LWA and another 50 individuals who play a more

“We don’t do political events, religious events or commercial events,” said Kleiner. “But if someone is creating an event honoring veterans, we will participate. We show people how the aircraft works. We talk about the type of missions it flew in Vietnam. We want to educate people about the role that Hueys played in Vietnam. A lot of people see the pictures but don’t understand what it did, which was basically everything.”

supportive role in the organization. More than 25 of those members either flew helicopters or maintained them during the Vietnam War or in peace time.

“(Huey 823) requires about 10 hours of maintenance for every hour you fly it,” said Kleiner. “It burns 95 gallons of jet fuel per hour. It has a two-hour flight range. If a group wants us to fly a mission for them, they have to basically do the fundraising.”

LWA was formed in 2011 after Huey 823 was purchased for $600,000 in California, then flown to Lancaster. During its wartime service from 1968 to 1970, Huey 823 flew 1,400 hours in Vietnam.

More than 12,000 helicopters of all types were deployed during the Vietnam War, 7,555 of which were Hueys.

“In the early 2000s, the Army divested itself of all Hueys,” said Kleiner. “This one went to a training school for mechanics. When the organization first started, (officials) were
