Ken Kulakowsky refuses to stop the presses BY JEFF FALK
Print is far from dead. But print is being threatened. Ken Kulakowsky is a historian, an advocate and a guardian of everything related to the art of lettering, typesetting and lithograph. Currently, Kulakowsky is looking for a new location from which to continue his crusade. “Printing is something that people need to know about,” said Kulakowsky. “I’m really into the history of printing because it has been such a major part of ever yone’s histor y. Everyone should know about printing, without hitting the print button. It’s a craft that needs to be maintained. We’re trying to keep the craft of printing alive.” One of the founding members of .918 Club at Heritage Press Museum, Kulakowsky is trying to save the education center that bears his name, the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress & Book Arts, located at
117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster. In August of 2023, Kulakowsky’s landlord, Thadeus Stevens College of Technology, informed him that his Memorandum of Understanding was being terminated effective July 1 of this year. Thadeus Stevens is planning to use the 2,500-square-foot building at 117 Parkside Ave. as transition space during upcoming construction. “Hopefully, someone has a place where we can relocate to,” said Kulakowsky. “We have a couple of Realtors looking for us. I hope they’ll come up with something soon. We could share space with other organizations. We pride ourselves on being hands-on.” Equipped with 10 floor model presses and 15 tabletop presses, the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress & Book Arts is a unique space to learn about printing and its history. The education center serves as a workshop for school groups, field trips, college classes, technical schools and the general Ken Kulakowsky sitting at one of the floor model presses at the letterpress and book arts education center See Kulakowsky pg 2 that bears his name.
MTEF’s Mini Golf Madness is stroke of genius

Innovative nonprofits really deserve a lot of credit; they come up with some very creative ways to raise money. Take Good Samaritan Services and its upcoming Ephrata Eats outing as an example. It’s an event featuring food, drink and fellowship, all in the name of healthy housing and sound financial practices. “People love eating good food for a good cause,” said Mandy Ramos, Good Samaritan Services’
director of community engagement. “It’s a wide variety of food, everything from savory to sweet. It’s not a fancy event. It’s held at your local brewing company. You’re probably going to run into someone you know. It’s a very light event. It’s a very social event. You’re going to have a chance to win things and help a local nonprofit. We really want to make it an event where everyone has a good time.” Good Samaritan Services will hold its Ephrata Eats event at Pour Man’s Brewing Company,

It’s golf as a vehicle, a learning tool. But there’s something much more cerebral going on here. The Manheim Township Education Foundation’s (MTEF) Mini Golf Madness is a forum for thinking outside the box, student growth and school spirit, all the while engaging the community. “Our focus is really on the student,” said Carissa Noel, MTEF’s events committee chair. “We really try to impact the students’ experience. But it’s not just about certain students. We want to impact all students equally. If students are what we’re really about - and they are - the question becomes, ‘How can we involve them more?’ Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of who we are serving.” MTEF student impact representatives Valeria Blanco (left) and Benjamin Snider provided
