The Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series, named for a longtime Highland Presbyterian Church music director, is held at Highland, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. The series presents four concerts each year. According to current Highland music ministry director Paul Thorlakson, the series kicks off each fall with an organ concert. A second concert is held near Christmas, a third concert is held in the spring, and the choir and an orchestra perform a major work in June. This year, Thorlakson will be joined by friends, including clarinetist Doris HallGulati and vocalists Jeffrey and Abbigail Martin, for “Paul and Friends,” an eclectic concert on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. The concert, which will include a variety of types of music, will run for 90 minutes with a brief intermission. There is no cost to attend the concert. A
freewill offering will be received. Thorlakson, who has been directing at Highland for a few years, was asked by concert organizers if he would put together a concert. “I said, ‘Yes, but I would like to bring some friends along with me,’” he said, noting that he and Hall-Gulati have been friends for quite some time. “Abbigail and Jeffrey are new friends (of mine) because they just came to Lancaster a few weeks ago,” said Thorlakson, who introduced Jeffrey as a new professor at Lancaster Bible College. Jeffrey and Abbigail met at Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute when they were assigned the same opera to study. “… And the rest is history,” said Jeffrey. “Music brought us together.” The group is looking forward to playing together at Highland. “Highland’s acoustics are wonderful,” said HallGulati. Chelas Montanye quickly replied, “It (was) totally by accident.” The story of the founding of the arts entity, which has a goal of healing and growing the community, involves an undiagnosed medical condition, the inspiration to hold life drawing sessions, and teachers asking for free school supplies. While the story arguably has more twists and turns than a crime mystery, it is all true. More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting. The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred. Many LCCTC students competed in the districtlevel competitions at Franklin County Career and Technology Center on Jan. 17; students from a SkillsUSA-hosting CTC often compete at an adjacent CTC in order to avoid home team bias and due to the fact that not all CTCs offer every SkillsUSA competition category. venue for the concert, which he called a “potpourri (of music) heavier on the romantic side.” As a pianist, he noted that he will play solos, instrumental duets, accompaniment, and more on the new Steinway D concert grand piano that was recently purchased by Highland following a worship and mission enhancement campaign that raised $400,000. “This will be the first Dorothy Rose Smith Concert that features that piano,” said Thorlakson. In addition to Thorlakson’s piano solos, Hall-Gulati noted that saxophone music and opera will be part of the mix. “(The concert) will be stylistically diverse,” said Thorlakson. “There will be some musical theater and
art song.” The musicians said to expect up to eight numbers including piano and clarinet duets, piano and voice, and piano and voice and clarinet. Thorlakson credited Dorothy Rose Smith with building the musical program at Highland. “When she passed away, the people at Highland decided to start a concert series,” he said, noting that the series is supported by a number of patrons. He believes the tradition of kicking off with a fall organ concert is based on the church’s purchasing a new organ in the fall at about the time the series began. Annual Tree Seedling Sale Planned The Lancaster County Conservation District is planning its 46th annual tree seedling sale. All trees and perennials are preordered, and orders are due Monday, March 9. Orders will be ready for pickup during a one-day distribution on Wednesday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The tree sale order list includes conifers and evergreens that would make a good wind break, hardwoods that offer shade and wildlife food and cover, as well as groundcover and pollinator-friendly perennials.
Some new selections are offered on this year’s list. Descriptions and photographs illustrating full-grown species are provided with the order form at www.lancasterconservation.org. area where many of her neighbors spoke Spanish, Montanye began to learn the language. When she was asked to help translate at construction sites, she became fluent in Spanish construction terms. Around 2001, Montanye moved to Asheville, N.C., where she met an architect who offered to teach her what she needed to know to work with masonry companies fabricating building facades. She learned to read plans and began traveling around the country to job sites. After moving to Maryland in 2005, she attended Hagerstown Community College in hopes of learning better ways to help her son, who has developmental differences. In 2007, she moved to an area outside Washington, D.C., where she discovered a town filled with art galleries. “They had First Fridays,” she recalled. “You could just walk into a studio, and there would be a model, and you could just sit and sketch. As an artist, I just loved it. It was therapeutic for me.” In 2008, at an art festival, she met Myers, whom she affectionately calls “Nobie” because he likes to be known as Mr. Nobody Special. “We immediately connected,” said Montanye, who moved to Ephrata, where Myers was living, and took a job helping
to build the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. It was at this time that her undiagnosed medical problems became an issue. Instead of driving to Philadelphia to work, she decided to go back to her artistic roots, renting a 10-by-10-foot booth in a Lancaster co-op and later moving to the Stahr Armory. She and Myers began holding art classes. “I started having life drawings, and we would get 30 or 40 people at these workshops,” Montanye said. Working with a ballet school, she was able to have models hold ballet poses for artists to draw. “They were gorgeous,” recalled Montanye. “I had never seen a life drawing workshop where there were ballet dancers doing poses.” In 2012, the first Art of Recycle opened at 27 N. State St., Ephrata. “We taught children’s and adult art workshops,” Montanye said. “We had a craft castle, and after school, children would come and we would have games, snacks, and crafts for them. It was a lot of fun.” The store sold donated art supplies, which attracted teachers from urban areas who asked for supplies for free. “If (students) come in without (pens and pencils), they can’t do any schoolwork,” said Montanye, who learned that many teachers were purchasing supplies with
their own money. She told the teachers to take what they needed. As word started to spread, she opened a Free Teacher Resource Area, now located in the basement of the current Art of Recycle at 27 Cloister Ave., Ephrata. Because the Art of Recycle is dedicated to raising the sense of community, people are welcome to volunteer or take part in activities that encourage socialization. “Anyone with a disability is welcome,” said Montanye, who noted that area organizations that aid those with special needs visit the store and senior centers bring memory care patients for classes. Injured workers volunteer at the center as part of their recovery program. A variety of free clubs meet in the evenings, and classes, workshops, teas, and a variety of other activities are offered for a nominal cost. The Art of Recycle has opened a second center in Hanover, and Montanye and Myers have written a book titled “The Art Of Recycle Creating Community Centers Through Landfill Resources.” Hours and more information about the many offerings of the Art of Recycle may be found at www.artofrecycle.org. LCHS Plays from pg 1 and that she is especially impressed with the makeup that will be used to portray the animals. “Joseph,” created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is a musical based on the Genesis account of Joseph, played by Kameron Garcia. The son of Jacob, played by Jim Mikulski, Joseph rises to prominence from slavery in Egypt. Narrators will include Bernadette Fertal, Katie Lyle, Sheridan Riva, and Isabelle Titzer. Pharaoh will be played by Oliver Klemmer and Potiphar by Xavier LeFevre. The sungthrough musical is similar to a rock opera. Although the musical styles vary, from country-western and calypso to bubblegum pop and rock ’n’ roll, Wagner said that the music is not difficult. Challenges of staging the show have included the fastpaced and nearly constant choreography, including a children’s chorus of 23 made up of students from area Catholic elementary schools, and adding the special effects to make the show feel more like a rock concert. Challenges for members of the ensemble include playing multiple roles, where they have to develop their own personalities for their characters, which Wagner said really adds fun for the audience. Wagner said she had wanted to do “Joseph” for some time for several reasons. “It has a great story and theme of forgiveness,” she said. “You can really play with the quirky characters of all the brothers.” She hopes that audience members will leave feeling uplifted by the messages of both stories. “I hope they walk away singing the songs from ‘Joseph,’” she said. one-act version of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” along with “Joseph.” Both plays will be presented at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, by a cast of 30 students on Thursday through Saturday, March 19 through 21, at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Sunday, March 22. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will open the show with a 40-minute presentation, followed by the 90-minute “Joseph.” “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” is based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. Lewis. The plot revolves around the four Pevensie siblings: Lucy, played by Alexis Lenhart; Edmund, played by Xavier LeFevre; Susan, played by Maddi Lewis; and Peter, played by Jacob Fertal. The children have been removed from London as part of a wartime evacuation to the countryside home of a friend of their parents. The presentation begins with Lucy, the youngest sibling, opening a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch, portrayed by Natalie Knox, who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Peyton Sheaffer. A battle, for which Wagner has brought in fight choreographer Dan Burke, ensues as the children venture with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler. LCHS students recently became International Thespian Society Troupe 8880, and student director Aria Yang will be at the helm for “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Wagner noted that video projection has been added to the backdrop

DCA Event To Feature Huckabee Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at its next Remember America Speaker Series event on Friday, April 17. The doors to the event venue, the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, will open at 6 p.m., with the pre-meal program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Gallery seating, for those who will attend only the featured presentation, will open at about 7:20 p.m. A VIP reception with Huckabee will be held prior to the evening’s festivities, with attendance by invitation only. Tickets to the reception are included with event sponsorship packages starting at the $2,500 level. The theme for the event is “Living Stones of Liberty … for Such a Time as This.” During the program, DCA fifth-grader Jessie Krieger will give her Headmaster’s Oration Competition-winning oration, titled “Liberty Outdated?” “Jessie’s title matched well with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker. The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said. DCA headmaster Michael Myers is looking forward to hosting Huckabee. “He is a great example of a Christian who took his Christian faith seriously, even to the point of
taking it to the political realm,” Myers commented. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage. From July 19 to 24, the Department of Business at Elizabethtown College will host “Entrepreneurship With a Purpose,” a summer camp designed to introduce high school students to the concept of developing a successful social enterprise. Camp graduates will receive a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for four years, to attend Elizabethtown College. By Chelsea Peifer
This summer, students entering grades nine through 12 are invited to take part in a new camp being offered by the Department of Business at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. “Entrepreneurship With a Purpose” is set to take place on campus from Sunday to Friday, July 19 to 24. “This is a project we’ve been thinking of for several years,” explained Cristina E. Ciocirlan, department of business chair and associate professor of management. “The focus of the camp is on social enterprise, and (the students) will be using a market approach to solve community and social and environmental problems.” Countless examples of thriving social enterprises exist locally and globally, and Ciocirlan cited the Grameen Bank founded by social entrepreneur, banker, and economist Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh as one of those. “That bank focused on giving small loans to female entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, and with those small loans they could build a business for themselves,” Ciocirlan explained. “The main difference between a social enterprise and a charity is
that a charity gives away things without offering any compensation, but social enterprises actually charge a price for the good,” Ciocirlan described. “It’s the idea that (people) could use entrepreneurship to make the community or the environment better.” At camp, students will take a field trip to a local social enterprise to see the concept in action and ask questions. Another visit will be made to a local business accelerator and incubator to show campers first-hand about another avenue available for launching and growing a business. Ciocirlan noted that accelerators work with existing businesses to take their businesses to the next level, while incubators help entrepreneurs as they move from idea to launch. Campers will receive instruction on how to develop, refine, and test business ideas; how to create a business plan; how to market and finance an enterprise; and how to persuade people that their idea is worth pursuing. Students will form small teams to research needs and develop an idea for a social enterprise. They will work toward presenting a live pitch on their projects to a team of judges in a friendlier “Shark Tank”-style format. Elizabethtown College offers
both a minor and a concentration in entrepreneurship. Ciocirlan noted that the concept of social enterprise beautifully complements the college’s motto of “Educate for Service.” “Basically, this model says that we should use our knowledge and skills to benefit community,” summarized Ciocirlan. Lodging for the week will give students the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life as two students will be assigned to a room in the adult-chaperoned residence halls. Meals will be served in the all-you-can-eat college cafeteria. Evenings will allow time for recreation for campers with outdoor games, board games, movies, and more. The Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness, and Well-Being will be open for use, including the swimming pool. Registration for the camp is now open at www.etown.edu /entrepreneur. Lititz Day Of Prayer Service Slated
The Shaarai Shpielers will perform their 22nd annual Purimshpiel, “The Pajama Shpiel,” on Sunday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. Admission will be free. The Purimshpiel - which gets its name from the Yiddish word “spiel,” meaning play - is a comic production that features participants wearing costumes that depict the characters in the story in the Book of Esther. This book is the central text and narrative that describes what transpired on Purim and why it has become an important Jewish holiday. Each year the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and somehow merge the themes of that musical with the story of Esther. The Manheim Township boys’ basketball team was not going to give up following a dismal first quarter in which Central Dauphin jumped out to an 18-5 lead. In the first-round game of their District Three Class 6A playoff game at Central Dauphin, the Blue
Streaks rebounded from that 13-point deficit to actually gain a 30-28 halftime advantage. They outscored the Rams by another six points in the third only to watch that led dwindle away in the fourth quarter. Central Dauphin (20-5) came back from an eight-point deficit to defeat Township 66-60 in overtime, outscor-
ing the Streaks 8-2 in the extra period. Township, which had entered the district playoffs as the number 12 seed, ended its season with a 13-9 record. The Streaks’ push for the district playoffs included a five-game win streak to close out the regular season. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Manheim Township went 1-1 in its District Three Class 6A girls’ playoffs. However, the one loss didn’t end the Blue Streaks’ season. The Streaks, who fell to 18-7 following their 44-26 loss at Central York in Thursday’s district quarterfinals, live to fight another day as the PIAA
Class 6A state playoffs take the top seven teams from District Three. Hence, Township will play consolation games, looking to finish among the top seven. The Streaks started their district playoffs with a 33-17 win at home versus Cedar Cliff on Monday, February 17. The Township defense was stellar in the Cedar Cliff game at Neffsville. As a member of the student staff in the Office of the Chaplain, Bush is gaining professional-level work experience and a mentoring relationship with the university chaplain. The student assistant’s responsibilities include publishing the Religious Life newsletter, recruiting new students interested in religious life, and helping student deacons with events.

Hunting, Fishing Show Planned Forum Learning The 56th Lancaster Hunting and Fishing Show and Sale will take place rain, snow, or shine on Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the climate-controlled Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) anticipates granting two $2,000 scholarships to Lancaster County high school seniors in 2020. Applications will be accepted from students continuing their education in the 2020-21 school year with the intent of majoring in a curriculum that focuses on natural resources and/or conservation. Examples of acceptable programs of study include environmental sciences, wildlife and/or fisheries biology, environmental resource management, or other related programs. Acceptable programs should lead to an advanced degree (two-year associate degree or four-year baccalaureate degree). The completed application must be received in the LCCD office by Tuesday, March 31. The scholarship committee of LCCD will conduct a review of the applicants. The basis for selection will be determined on past performance and activities, current school and community involvement, future purpose and direction, and communication skills. The scholarship committee, prior to the final selection, will interview the top candidates. An announcement of the successful candidates will be made by Friday, May 15. We are seeking a self-motivated full-time Water and Wastewater Lab Technician to join our team in Manheim, PA and become an integral part of our team. The successful candidate primarily performs routine laboratory analysis and related tasks under the supervision of the Operations Manager. Clean and maintain wastewater laboratory and equipment, perform water and wastewater laboratory analysis on process and quality control tests, collect samples from various MAWSA locations, communicate test results to the licensed operators, perform other duties as required; including all MAWSA departments.

Strong safety awareness and a good record and understanding of safe work practices are essential.
