The Return Of The Daddy/Daughter Sweetheart Dance he Daddy/Daughter Sweetheart Dance, long a tradition in Manheim Township, was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Now, the dance will return to give girls in grades one through eight an opportunity to dance with their fathers or other special adult male in their life. “We have had grandfathers fill in for fathers, and if a father has two daughters, he can bring both,” said Michael Kurland, youth sports and activities manager with Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department. As in the past, the dance will be held at The Barn at Stoner Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. It will take place on Friday, April 1, from 7 to 9 p.m., and there is a per-couple cost to attend. To make the evening special, Mixed Impressions DJs will spin a variety of tunes to appeal to both daughters and dads. “There will be lots of dancing,” said Kurland, “The DJ will play ‘Cha-Cha Slide,’ ‘Macarena,’ and (music to dance the) ‘Electric Slide’ to get the kids really involved and hyped to dance with the dads.”

“We have played together,” said Laudermilch. “I know him personally, and I have always admired his playing.” The concert was planned for the spring of 2021, but COVID-19 restrictions interfered. “I can’t think of anyone else I want to (present this piece) with,” said Laudermilch. “I thought I would try one more time.” Laudermilch’s efforts appear to have paid off. The New Holland Band will present “A Rhapsody in Blue” as its opening concert of 2022 at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, March 6, at 3 p.m. Laudermilch has planned the concert to include Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture,” Haydn Wood’s

“Mannin Veen,” Mark Camphouse’s “Foundation,” and “Be Still My Soul, played to the melody of “Finlandia.” Laudermilch has planned three marches for the event: John Philip Sousa’s “With Pleasure” and “Stars and Stripes Forever,” along with “The Purple Pageant March” by Karl L. King. Matthews is a Philadelphia native, a world-class pianist and the president of Eastern University. He began his classical piano studies at age 4. He completed his undergraduate degree in church music and organ at Westminster Choir College and his Master of Music in choral conducting from Temple University. The first trucks, which arrived in Kentucky at 4 a.m. on Dec. 12, carried water and ready-to-eat foods to bring immediate relief to those affected. According to Lapp, about 80 houses were destroyed in the rural Campbellsville region. Currently, BOH plans to have people on the ground in the area through the end of April.

“At this point, Blessings of Hope is responsible for all incoming donations into the distribution center at Mayfield,” Lapp noted, adding that he estimated about 100 truckloads of product were on the ground there in mid-January. “Initially we were sending product from here, but two weeks into this, we saw there was product coming from all over America that needed to be managed,” he explained. “We shifted our focus to managing what was coming in and managing the distribution in Mayfield and the surrounding area.” Lapp described churches that were stuffing buses with anything they could send, including clothing and toys in addition to food items. He noted that two BOH trucks distribute items from the center to the surrounding communities. Lapp serves on the board of Plain Compassion Crisis Response, which is based in Intercourse. He said a steady stream of volunteers has

been pouring into the area ravaged by the tornado. “They focus more on the cleanup side,” said Lapp, who noted about 250 volunteers were being managed per day with 500 to 800 from the Lancaster area having served at the site. He added that soon after the tornado hit, representatives of Bowling Green contacted Plain Compassion to manage all local volunteers. “They were processing up to 900 local applications a day in Bowling Green alone,” he said. “(People) want to know if they go there to give that their talents will be utilized and not just wasted,” he said. BOH was founded in 2006 when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that would otherwise have been wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. During the spring of 2020, Karen Davis, Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area publicity representative, saw a video of an event held by a Kiwanis Club in California. She thought the event might work well in Lititz, so she shared it with another member, and the first Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party was held in 2021. “We have had requests from people who were involved in the first virtual party in January of 2021 to please do it again,” said Davis. The club has responded by organizing the second Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party to be held via Zoom on Friday, March 11, beginning at 7 p.m. Each Zoom engagement will include commen-

tary about pairings. Those who take part will pick up their party bags on Thursday, March 10, at a specified location in Lititz. The Zoom portion of the event is sponsored by Moravian Manor Communities. “Each party bag will contain three bottles of wine from Portugal. Along with the wine will be tastes of cheeses and chocolates to complement each bottle,” said Davis, who noted that each bag will contain enough food samples and wine for four people to enjoy. The Lititz Historical Foundation will present an author event featuring Eileen Gregg on Saturday, March 26, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Gregg recently wrote a book titled “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel.” The book focuses on a carousel placed in Rocky Springs Park, a few miles south of Lancaster, by Gustav Dentzel in 1899. When the park closed, the carousel was operated at Lake Lansing Park in Michigan and later at Dollywood in Tennessee. In 1999, the carousel was returned to Lancaster and purchased for $1.3 million, all private donations raised by the Rocky Springs Carousel Association. When the association’s plan to locate it in a public square in Lancaster’s downtown did not materialize, the carousel was placed in storage, where it remains today. Gregg’s book tells the story of how the expectations of those who had contributed to the carousel’s

purchase collided with the realities of city policies. The book’s 234 pages include photos of 14 animals on the Rocky Springs Carousel that were professionally restored between 2005 and 2008. Other than a dog and a rooster, which were put on display for a short time, the animals have not been seen by the public since their restoration. At the author event, Gregg will discuss the production of the book, host a question-and-answer session, and show rare footage of the

carousel in operation. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the end of the program, and cash is required for payment. There is no charge to attend the event. The cadet program, for youths age 12 and above, provides opportunities to develop leadership skills, character and physical fitness while learning about military life, engaging in search and rescue activities, and experiencing aerospace as a potential career choice. Volunteer Kathleen Lutz said the fastnachts are so popular, they often sell out. “We have people who ship them out of state,” she said. “People also freeze them because they freeze well.” Volunteers are invited to help with the fastnacht bake and they’ll be offered hands-on training, Mahan said, noting that no one is striving for perfection. “Our fastnachts are like snowflakes. No one is like the other,” she stated. “They are all handmade. No machines are used.” And on the rare occasion a fastnacht turns out that can’t be sold, it won’t go to waste.
