Seventy-four years ago, Dennis Denenberg received services from the Society of Crippled Children and Adults that profoundly affected him and changed the course of his life. At the age of 4, Denenberg received speech therapy that turned a weakness into a strength.
It’s the kind of story that the organization, now known as Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, has routinely authored over the last nine decades.
“I really garbled my words; it wasn’t just a stutter,” said Denenberg, clearly and succinctly. “You could really not understand what I was saying. My time at Schreiber opened the door to a successful K-through-12 experience. It opened the door to college, and I became an educator and a nationally recognized speaker. Schreiber changed my life. I’ve become involved as a donor and a volunteer.”
A 78-year-old resident of Manheim Township, Denenberg is believed to be the oldest living Schreiber patient. He’s also leading an initiative to find any former Schreiber patient who is older than him, someone who would relieve him of the unofficial title of Schreiber’s oldest living patient.

Music can soothe. Music can inspire. Universal, music knows no limits, knows no boundaries, knows no borders.
More than bringing them together, music connects people. Music makes us human.
“Music is very important because it brings people together,” said Matt Samly, who’s been the director of the Lititz Community Band for four years. “We listen to it in our cars. Out of anything in this world, it’s music that has that common element. Look at audiences at concerts; it’s just anybody. It’s always something for people to look forward to. It puts a smile on their faces. Culture changes, but music doesn’t.”
The Lititz Community Band promotes all kinds of music, explores music and makes live music available to the masses. Made up of members from Lititz and surrounding areas, the band has the purpose of both representing the community and serving it.

Faith can move mountains. But faith with acts of service becomes even more powerful and impactful.
By using their collective talents, St. James Catholic Church’s Knights of Columbus honor God by helping others.
“You can be a wonderful person, but we derive part of our inspiration from our Christian teachings and upbringings,” said Rick Thompson, who’s been St. James’ Knights’

“We support the community,” said Samly. “Everybody likes some kind of music, and we try to play a wide variety of music. It’s a catharsis for the community. People relate to our kind of music, and we support community events. We’re the community’s band, and we’re proud of it.” In season, the Lititz Community Band rehearses at its home base, Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz. From the middle of April to late May, the band practices once a week in preparation for its season, which begins with an appearance in

Veritas Academy is in the growth business, and business is booming.
It’s the type of growth that could be characterized as development. It’s the type of growth that originates from within. It’s the kind of growth that is fostered in a healthy environment.
The expansion project is expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.

“When God gives growth, you’ve got to recognize that,” said Ty Fischer, who’s been the head of school at Veritas Academy for 29 years. “Here at Veritas, our effort has been toward the mission of growing and cultivating students. We have seen growth, and at the core of that growth is an exceptional faculty. What we’re doing is preparing these young men and women to respond to callings and take God with them.”
Veritas Academy’s current expansion project will provide the classical Christian school with greater abilities to provide better educational opportunities to more students from preschool to 12th grade. After Veritas Academy doubled its student population over the last seven years, the school is now doubling the size of its learning space at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola.
Veritas Academy conducted an official groundbreaking ceremony for its $7 million expansion project on Jan. 20. A few days earlier, the project experienced a soft opening in the form of some initial excavating.
“This expansion is not just about numbers,” said Fischer. “Everything we do here harkens back to the Bible and a classical Christian education. What this expansion will allow us to do is more fully form our students. In that formation, we want them to have those skills from a classical liberal arts education.”
The two-story expansion project is being constructed on the west side of Veritas Academy’s 11-acre campus. The project will provide Veritas with a new gymnasium, more classrooms, a common area and an updated science lab.
“We’ve run out of space,” said Fischer. “Almost all of our space right now is classroom space. The expansion project will just about double our square footage. It will provide our faculty with opportunities to better support our entire program.”
“We love our building,” added Fischer. “The great thing is that our architects took some of the thematic aspects of the building and built it into the new construction. It looks classical. We don’t want our building to be extravagant, but we want it to be functional and beautiful.”
Veritas Academy embarked on a capital campaign project to financially support the expansion in the summer of 2022. As

it neared the finish line, Veritas dubbed the final push for the last $700,000 “A Place for We.”
“God has blessed us. He’s been very good to us,” said Fischer, a resident of Leola. “This is the first major capital campaign and construction campaign we’ve done at the school. We received a lot of feedback from donors, and the last 10% was the public phase of the campaign. A lot of the giving was in the quiet phase of the plan. All glory be to God. He used the generosity of the community to make it possible. As we faithfully went out to our community, God opened so many hearts to make this possible.”
Currently, there are 409 students enrolled at Veritas Academy. The majority of that student population hails from the Conestoga Valley, Ephrata, ELANCO, Manheim Township, Warwick and Hempfield school districts.
“Veritas is here to meet a need,” said Fischer. “It’s a need that I think all communities have. We want to
form young men and women in the image of Christ. One of the greatest distinctions of our school is just the joyfulness. We want to produce students our community can be proud of. We want the joy in the building to flow into Leola and the greater Lancaster County community.”
Veritas Academy, which was formally established 30 years ago, employs 53 staff members, more than 40 of whom are teachers. The school receives funding from tuition, the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit program and community donations.
“We’re a younger school,” said Fischer. “From the beginning, we thought we were doing good work. Now, we have a good track record. Not only do we talk a good game, we have proof. What’s happened over time is that the mission and vision haven’t changed at all. God has actually grown us up.”

“I am, at this point, the oldest living client that we know of,” said Denenberg. “We’re trying to find out if I am truly the oldest or if there is someone else we can honor.”
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, which is located at 625 Community Way, Lancaster, is searching for its oldest living patient as part of a celebration commemorating 90 years of service to the Lancaster County community and surrounding counties. That oldest living patient will be honored at Schreiber’s 42nd annual gala, set for 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster.
As part of getting the word out about the search, officials of Schreiber have contacted supporters through newsletters, emails and social media; written letters to the editors of local newspapers; and appeared on podcasts and radio
shows and in television segments.
“(Schreiber’s) work is really critical,” said Denenberg. “They never give up on a child. Their goal is to get children to a point where they don’t have to come to Schreiber anymore.”
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development provides services like physical therapy, occupational therapy, education services, parent services and, of course, speech therapy, to about 2,000 kids from Lancaster, Lebanon, Berks, York, Chester and Dauphin counties each year. Over the years, Schreiber has served tens of thousands of children with disabilities.
“There are some amazing stories of Schreiber success which may have never happened without its intervention,” said Denenberg. “It’s a place you can bring your child, and their services have expanded greatly over the years. I think there’s still a lot of room to grow in
terms of public awareness. I think parents spread the word. (Schreiber officials) want to reach as many children as possible. There’s clearly room for Schreiber’s image to be put into the community more forcefully.”
An advocate and an ambassador, Denenberg has been one of Schreiber’s top “duck salespeople” for one of the organization’s most lucrative fundraisers, its annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival, which this year will be conducted from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 13. One of Denenberg’s personal resolutions for 2026 is to become more involved with the organization that was so instrumental in his development.
“I actually want to work with children. I just have to get my clearances,” said Denenberg. “I admire the goal of helping children to become their best. They may be children who are neglected
because of their disabilities. Children with disabilities have incredible potential. Edna Schreiber and her assistants gave me such a gift. I’m forever grateful. I don’t know what my life would’ve been like without that speech therapy.”
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development was originally established as the Society for Crippled Children and Adults in response to the polio epidemic. Edna Schreiber led the organization’s efforts for 31 years before retiring in 1967.
During the late 1980s, the organization shifted its focus toward more specialized pediatric therapy for infants, children and adolescents with developmental delays and disabilities.
“I hope people realize what a gem Schreiber is,” said Denenberg. “The people at Schreiber and the clients are real heroes.”

“We received the greatest gift (Jesus Christ), and in turn we try to repay that with the gifts we’ve been given. I feel my job as a Christian is more about service and providing care for people with needs. An old farmer once said to me, ‘You go to church on Sunday to get recharged so you can go out and be of service.’ You draw inspiration from being in your faith community.”
Located at 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, St. James Catholic Church’s Knights of Columbus Council 10827 serves both the church and the community directly, all the while deriving companionship through interactions.
The men who are members of St. James’ Knights of Columbus conduct fundraisers, cook and perform kitchen duties for church functions, lead Rosaries at Mass, actively support vocations to the priesthood, sponsor youth basketball and soccer competitions, host trivia nights and clean up a 1-mile stretch of Route 501 as part of the state’s Adopt-AHighway program. Knights of Columbus Council 10827 meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of every month in a classroom at the

church.
During the 2024-25 fraternal year, St. James’ Knights received the prestigious Star Council award for excellence in membership recruiting, parish and community support and the financial awareness of members.
“It’s largely a service group. We don’t do that many things just for ourselves,” said Thompson. “Everything is for the larger community, the church community and the Warwick community. We do care for one another, and charity is important to us. If you’re into socializing and charity, this is where the action is if you’re a man.”
Currently, St. James Catholic Church’s Knights of Columbus boasts 115 members age 18 and up. Most of them reside in Lititz, Warwick and the surrounding areas.
“They’re men who value the same things I value,” said Thompson, a resident of Warwick Township. “They’re the ones who put in the hours. There are people who choose to put in a lot of hours for the Knights, and there are those whose volunteer days are behind them. But we want to appeal to
families.”
“It’s like an extended family,” added Thompson. “We share the faith life, and we have enough in common. We all have to get along and serve one another.”
St. James’ Knights of Columbus group operates under a $10,000 to $12,000 annual budget. Among the nonprofits and programs that the Knights support are Special Olympics, Aaron’s Acres, the Lititz-Warwick Community Chest food bank, youth trips and conferences, the financial health of the families of deceased Knights, A Woman’s Concern and activities sponsored by the Diocese of Harrisburg.
“We try to support as many organizations as possible, but there are administrative costs involved,” said Thompson. “I like growing the organization, and not just in terms of membership. I want to get people to have better communications and have better marketing. I’d like to have a greater appeal in the church.”
There are nearly 20 Roman Catholic congregations worshipping in Lancaster County, and approximately a third of those churches sponsor Knights of

Founded by Father Michael McGivney in 1882, the Knights of Columbus operates more than 17,000 councils in more than a dozen countries around the world.
“There is a long tradition associated with being a Knight,” said Thompson. “The idea of a Knight is a reference to medieval times. The Catholic church is a hierarchy, and the pastor needs men to rely on to get things done.”

“It’s a seasonal band. It’s a summer band,” said Samly, a clarinet-playing resident of Manheim Township. “We’re happy to go anywhere in the community, and we’re always looking for good venues to play. We do have a band that is willing to be part of the community. People come out and enjoy the band. There’s something for the participants, and there’s something for the community. It’s a family activity. We have musicians who are family or families who are playing together.”
munity Band are volunteers, and most of their performances are free to attend.
“I think it’s a passion,” said Samly. “You take years of lessons growing up, and you want to keep those skills. We get so caught up in our everyday lives; it’s hectic and stressed. But this is an outlet. I think people look for that outlet. People have to love it to do it, or they wouldn’t do it. They’re people who thoroughly enjoy what they do. There’s no feeling like it.”

About 65 serious musicians make up the Lititz Community Band, residents of Lititz, Manheim Township, Manheim, Hempfield, Ephrata and Lampeter. Those musicians are masters of flutes, saxophones, trumpets, tubas, baritones, trombones, French horns, snare drums, timpani and clarinets.
“These are people who have a commonality,” said Samly. “It’s a diversity of musicians who have a love of music. They have an endur-

ing passion. Our rehearsals are like two-hour workouts. We see each other frequently, and we enjoy each other’s company.”
“They’re very talented,” he continued. “We have a wide range of experiences, and most have been playing for quite a while. We put on a professional performance. You have to enjoy it, but there’s a professional aspect to it.”
The Lititz Community Band’s origins can be traced to the late 1800s and the now-defunct Lititz Concert
Band. That spirit of community is the band’s enduring legacy.
“We have to be one of the oldest and one of the biggest volunteer bands in the county,” said Samly. “We’re a mainstay in the Lititz community. Tradition is a big part of it. That’s important.”
“If you really have a love of playing and you want to play, we’ll find a place for you,” Samly added. For additional information, email Samly at lititzcommunity band@gmail.com.
