Around 2000, Trent Davis, founder and CEO of Servants Inc., took a mission trip to Guatemala. The trip changed the direction of his life. “(Trent) felt a call to continue relationships and give others opportunity to have that experience,” said Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants. In 2021, members of the Red Rose Quilters Guild made comfort quilts to donate to Off The Streets.
Elaine Spangler has been sewing since she was a teenager, but she only dabbled in quilting. When she first moved to Lancaster County in 1992, she looked for a quilting group to join, but she waited until her children left home to get involved. In 2010, she joined the Red Rose Quilters Guild. The Red Rose Quilters Guild currently meets virtually on the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a time to visit with members. A business meeting is held and a speaker gives a presentation. See Quilters pg 3

everal National History Day (NHD) competition winners from St. John Neumann Catholic School, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, will compete in a virtual competition at Kutztown University on Saturday, Feb. 26. The theme of this year’s NHD contest was “Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences.” Participants researched and completed presentations on topics ranging from the Louisiana Purchase to the end of Apartheid in South Africa. Students in sixth and eighth grades took part in the event, which was held in person by placing students and judges in separate rooms in the parish building. Individual website winners were Molly Roark in first place for “From Helpers to Soldiers,” Christina Cropper in second place for “The Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis & Clark Expedition,” and Zoe Thurmond in third place for “The Korean War: America’s Stance in History.” Honorable mention went to Sebastien Baker for “The War to Not End All Wars: Treaty of Versailles.”

“Younger generations are more apt to accept, support, and encourage loved ones to get help (for mental health issues),” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “That’s a culture shift,” added McDevitt, who noted that data shows people are being educated about mental health. “That is the only way we will reduce the stigma,” she concluded. McDevitt noted that breaking through the stigma should result in a changed view of overall wellness. “We will be looking at mental health the same way we look at physical health because they’re intertwined,” she shared. “If you aren’t mentally well, you will not be physically well (and vice versa).” Noting that variables associated with COVID-19 have propelled attitudes toward mental health forward, McDevitt pointed to specific areas where struggles have been clear, including with children and in workplaces. “I think if there’s ever a time to address good mental health support in the workplace, it’s now,” noted McDevitt. “Supervisors need to understand that depression alters the person.” McDevitt added that while job expectations are necessary, flexibility is essential to help maintain employee mental wellness. “Someone who is struggling will be less productive, tardy, not meet deadlines, or be absent. The more (employees are supported) and connected to care, the more they want to give back, and the faster they will want to heal.” According to McDevitt, data is also showing that parents of today’s children are likely to seek support for a child’s mental health needs. In addi-
tion, teachers and guidance counselors are available to children attending school. In Pennsylvania, young people age 14 and older may make their own mental health decisions. McDevitt noted that teenagers may contact MHALC directly to be connected to resources. Because the northeast portion of the U.S. has higher access to care, the prevalence of mental illness is lower,
according to McDevitt. However, it still takes most people who experience issues more than a decade to seek help. MHALC supports and resources, including an online screening program, are available. For additional information, readers may visit www.mhalancaster.org.

According to Spangler, the virtual format has enhanced the choice of speakers. “(Virtual meetings have) really expanded our reach as far as variety of speakers,” she said. “We had one speaker from Norway.” Spangler reported that workshops based on a speaker’s project are often held the following day or the following Saturday. “We learn different techniques from them,” said Spangler of the optional workshops, which have recently been held virtually. Studio gatherings, which are optional, are still held in person on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 1 to 5 p.m. at Hosanna! A Fellowship of Christians, 29 Green Acre Road, Lititz. Prior to COVID-19 restrictions, quilts were distributed at a potluck meal held each February. “In 2021, we had a meeting in October to finish up some of the comfort quilts,” noted Spangler, who said quilts have been donated to a variety of organizations and most recently to Off The Streets, which helps the homeless transition back into housing. Spangler said the donated quilts are usually completed in one workshop day. “We set up eight to 10 machines, and we usually have the quilt tops done, so it’s just a matter of stitching the backing. Some are tied (quilts), and

some are stitched.” Quilts of Valor, includes dedicated members of the guild who meet monthly to make and distribute special quilts to servicemen and women. The history of the organization, which currently boasts about 150 members, dates back to 1983, when it was founded by Donna Lucidi, who served as its first president. The mission of the guild has always been to promote the many forms of quilting by presenting an
active program of education and study. The group is open to both men and women, and Spangler noted there are usually a few men in the membership. During November and December 2021, the guild was spotlighted in the Quilt Shop at Miller’s, 2811 Lincoln Highway East, Ronks, where guild quilts raised funds to make more comfort quilts to donate. The local Civil Air Patrol squadron at Lancaster Municipal Airport has announced that it will not hold its regular Monday night meetings out of concerns related to COVID-19. Instead, the squadron will resume virtual cadet meetings. The edict to not meet in person will remain in effect until further notice. “There are home repair needs here, and we have these skills,” said Cotton. “(Trent thought), ‘Let’s start working more regularly here in the community.’” Home Helps began serving in York in 2007. From York, the leap to Lancaster County was natural. Davis now works out of The Candy Factory building in downtown Lancaster several days a week. According to Cotton, the executive team had a

Skills like roofing, plumbing, and carpentry are bonuses but not required. “We put an emphasis on building relationships,” Cotton explained. “You don’t have to be a professional carpenter to sit down and have a conversation. Anybody can serve.” Servants Inc. is already serving in most Lancaster County School districts where its services would not be duplicated. The organization is actively at work in Columbia as well as New Holland, and representatives attended the Together Initiative Network (TIN) meeting at Pequea Valley Intermediate School on Nov. 17, 2021, for the purpose of introducing the organization to the local community. Servants Inc., still sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters. On Jan. 2 and 9, Heartland Recovery trips left to help those areas recently devastated by tornadoes. Knights of Columbus Council 6810 will hold a Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship on Sunday, Jan. 23, from 1 to 5 p.m. The competition will take place at St. Leo the Great School, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.
