Township Scouts Create Two Little Libraries bout two years ago, the eight members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 70069, which meets at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 Saint Thomas Road, Lancaster, had an idea. To receive their Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette can earn, they would hold a prom for senior citizens. “It was pre COVID-19, and they were all excited about it,” recalled Jodi Stapler, who has led the group of seventhand eighth-grade girls since they started as Daisies in first grade. When the troop members were able to seriously consider the project again in the summer of 2021, they decided they should focus on a safer contribution to the community. Since all the troop members enjoy reading, they thought a little library might be a nice addition to the area. Stapler reported that they considered Overlook Park and a spot near the Neffsville Elementary

making them, the girls thought it would be cool if there was a smaller one for little kids to pick out books,” Stapler recalled. “We said, ‘Why not? We have the supplies. Let’s do it.’” The taller library is about five feet high, and the smaller one is about three feet so children can reach into it easily. The girls collected books to stock the little libraries, which are available to the public. Those who use

Thank You For Waiting When Philip Mellott, director of public works for Manheim Township, was asked what area residents need to know about how the 165 miles of local roads are cleared when it snows, he was quick to point out the priorities the department adheres to during a storm. “Our first mission is to plow the main roads that people travel,” said Mellott. “Once those are plowed, we go into the subdivisions, but we only plow the center of the road.” Mellott explained that this first pass through a neighborhood is designed to make the roads accessible to first responders police, fire departments, and ambulances.

He will address prevention of addiction problems through education, which includes having conversations with children prior to any signs or symptoms. “(I’d like attendees to gain) a conscientious awareness of what addiction looks like so as to be able to identify it,” Jakubowski said. Millette added that education is essential to raising awareness. “It is recognizing that addiction touches us even when we are unaware,” he said, “because a neighbor or a family member could be struggling, and (knowing what to look for) will help to bring it to the surface.” Cassel pointed out that hosting the workshops has impacted the Conestoga Church congregation. “I think out of the addiction seminars grew the interest in the church to make space for CCARS addiction counseling,” he said. “This is a continuation of making the community aware of a problem that we face.” CCARS, one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and eastern parts of Lancaster County, is housed in the church. The organization will be a sponsor of the workshop along with The Potter’s House. Manheim Township from pg 1 Local Youths Honored At Irish Dance Competition On Thanksgiving weekend, as many families were celebrating over a traditional feast and spending time with loved ones, thousands of dancers from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware were headed to downtown Philadelphia for the annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Irish Dance Championships. This year, the Paloma School of Irish Dance sent 32 competitors, two of whom won the title of Regional Champion. Two others

were fourth and fifth in their competitions as well. Jase Lawrence of Conestoga won the Boys’ Under 8 Championship, qualifying him for the National Championships this year in Montreal, Quebec. At 8 years old, he is still too young to attend the World Championships, but he has attended the All-Scotland Championships twice in Glasgow, Scotland, and the American

members of the Manheim Township police force. If an officer feels roads are unsafe, he or she contacts the on-call crew leader who then calls other crew leaders to contact employees. DeSanctis noted that plowing will begin as soon as the roads turn white, and Mellott added that waiting is important with regard to putting down salt. “We wait for it to accumulate a bit because when you drop the salt, you want it to stick to the center of the road so it drains both ways to the edges,” he explained. Should several inches of snow accumulate, crew members will remain at the public works building to keep the roads cleared for the duration. Roads that are not plowed by the department include state Routes 30, 501, and 272. Manheim Township has a policy regarding mailboxes that are damaged during a storm. “If we strike a mailbox physically with our plow, we will fix it,” explained Mellott, who added that repairing mailboxes that fall over due to snowfall is the responsibility of the owner. Once the roads are cleared for emergency vehicles, the plows will return to finish the job. To allow the system to work, Mellott encouraged residents to be patient about cleaning ends of driveways and sidewalks, which homeowners are required to clean. “Our end product is to get the snow back to the edge of the road,” he said. “Just because we don’t do it all in one pass doesn’t mean we aren’t coming back and taking care of it.” Department of Public Works engineer William Sauers noted that crew members take precautions before heading out to plow. “There’s a preparation process when a (snow) event is about to occur that the crew goes through to get the truck set up. There are safety checks,” he said. John DeSanctis, head crew leader, oversees the plowing crews, which work with several trucks, ranging from pickups to a dual axle dump truck. He elaborated on Sauers’ comments, noting, “There is a whole checklist, and we always try to be ahead of the game. Each driver is required to do a pre-trip inspection to make sure everything is up and running and ideally catch any defects.” According to Mellott, decisions regarding road safety begin with the

The newly formed Manheim Township Youth Council met for the first time on Dec. 6. The Council hosted its organizational meeting at the Manheim Township Municipal Office to discuss roles, leadership and the group’s goals for 2022. The Manheim Township Youth Council was established by the Board of Commissioners earlier in 2021 to evaluate and review issues and problems facing youths in Manheim Township. The high school-age students will learn about local government and will provide advice and a youth perspective of issues within the Manheim Township community. At the meeting, Manheim Township manager Jim Drumm presented Youth Council members with the resolution creating the council and explained their mission. The township manager also served as the acting chair of the meeting and instructed council members on the structure and procedures of conducting public meetings.

The council began by voting for leadership roles. Krishna Chinnasamy was selected as chairperson, and Zayne Seyed was chosen as vice chairperson. Joining Krishna and Zayne on the council are Aanya Iyengar, Macy Eisenhart, Jack Bear, Sophie Esbenshade, Zaara Seemeen, and Soleil Yoder Salim. The Manheim Township Youth Council discussed many issues and concerns in its first meeting, including protecting and fostering green spaces, year-round pickleball courts, the need for transportation, adding sidewalks for the safety of students, and expanding recreation programs. Beginning in January, the Youth Council meetings will be held on the first Monday of each month at 4 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room at the Municipal Office, 1840 Municipal Drive. The meetings are open to the public to attend in person or via Zoom. The Zoom information and link can be found on www.manheim township.org/calendar.

Since the pandemic began, Aiden rose to the challenge of learning new choreography remotely over Zoom. Despite this adjustment, Aiden now dances at the championship level. In the future, he hopes to dance professionally and own his own Irish dance studio. Liam Snodgress, a seventh-grader at Manheim Township Middle School, placed fifth in the Boys’ Under 13 division. This placement qualifies him for the National Championships and the World Championships. Liam only entered the championship level in February 2021 and achieved a 17thplace finish at the National Championships in Phoenix in July 2021. Liam performs regularly with the Paloma Performance Troupe. Malakye Wilson of New Cumberland won the Men’s Under 19 Championship, qualifying him for two more events: the National Championships in Montreal and the 2022 World Championships in Belfast, Ireland. Now age 19, Malakye began dancing at age 8 and inspired the rest of his siblings to dance. Now, five of his eight siblings take classes at the Paloma School of Irish Dance. Malakye is a freshman at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, and his dream is to dance professionally and become a writer. He enjoys teaching young dancers and has performed regularly with the Paloma Performance Troupe as a lead dancer. MTSD District Holiday Shop - Thank You! Over 185 families conﬁrmed participation in our December 11th district Holiday Shop. Our two district social workers, Ms. Roseanne Myers and Ms. Jaime Falgie, worked alongside many other volunteers to plan, organize, and host a largerscale holiday shop. Thanks to the wonderful donations from many staff members, parents, and community members, the shop was ﬁlled with special gifts, toiletries, and food items for our families. Thank you to everyone who played a role in this very special - and important - event!

Sprouting Learners On December 7, 2021, over thirty Little Blue Streaks (ages 3-5) participated in Sprouting Learners, an early learning program that focuses on providing students and their families with access to early learning materials that focus on literacy, math, STEM, social-emotional, and ﬁne/gross motor activities. Thank you to our awesome community partners, Manheim Township Public Library, Manheim Township Police Department, MT Fire Rescue, Millersville University Migrant Education Program, CAP, Owl Hill, Hands-on-House Children’s Museum of Lancaster, and STEM Starts Now for providing our families with additional materials and information to engage our youngest learners in meaningful learning opportunities. Thank you also to Manheim Township Educational Foundation for the grant that funds this important program and to our awesome MT Teachers who created these lessons for our Little Streaks. Sprouting Learners was an awesome event! We look forward to future Sprouting Learners opportunities in Spring 2022. R079504
