History Of Mount Joy
Besides the Native Americans who passed through the area, the first whites to come to the Mount Joy area were the Indian traders. These whites traded with Native Americans along the two branches of the Chiques Creek and the Susquehanna River. Following the traders came the settlers. (Although many old history books and histories written about Mount Joy say that Mount Joy was started as little villages, that is not correct.) Plantations were here first. Hugh White bought and lived on his plantation as early as 1741. His plantation encompassed all of the present Mount Joy Borough as the borders were before the annexation of Florin and also that portion east of the little Chiques Creek in the Lefever Road vicinity. A second plantation called “Beautiful” was owned by John McCracken lay toward the Florin Ward, and a third owned by Thomas Baly in 1753 now encompasses the rest of the Florin Ward.
There were three main villages in the early 1800’s. Mountjoy (one word) was the village in the eastern part of today’s borough. Jacob Rohrer was the owner of this “housing development.” Richland, the western part of the original borough, was begun by John Bartruff. Springville (the Florin Ward) was laid out by Christian Hertzler. In between and around the three original villages, others plotted lots for sale and labeled these parcels. By the time Mount Joy Borough was formed in 1851, it incorporated Mountjoy, Richland, Wallickstown, Mountjoy Continued, Richland Extended, and Richland and Mountjoy Connected. Florin was annexed by the borough in 1963.
The first roads in the area were trails. Next came roads that were either muddy or dusty depending on the weather, but they had to be maintained, so they became known as turnpikes. A pike (pole) was placed across the road and the fee for “turning the pike” was about three cents. The present Main Street was one of these turnpikes. Inns started to appear along the pikes.
Manheim Street was the first street, road, or Indian traders’ trail through the area. Old Peter’s Road (as it is still called in some areas) ran from the Schuylkill River to the Susquehanna River. The road did not curve to create New Haven Street but proceeded straight into Donegal Springs Road and then on to Bainbridge where
there is a monument showing the end of the road. Trading was done in this area with the Conoy Indians. (If traders were planning to trade with the Paxtang Indians and were traveling on Old Peter’s Road, they would have made a right turn at what is now the Manheim-West Main Street intersection and headed toward what is now Harrisburg.)
Submitted by the late Vera Albert, Mount Joy Area Historical Society
This statue is a memorial to the ship “Mountjoy” that saved starving Scots-Irish of London-derry, Northern Ireland in 1689. Twenty years later, these same people came to this area bringing their beloved name with them. Mountjoy Township was named first in 1759, followed by the village of Mountjoy in 1812. Mount Joy was incorporated into a borough in 1851.
The ship statue has emerged from the proceeds of Mount Joy’s sesquicentennial celebration held in May 2001. It was presented to the town as a gift to commemorate our shared heritage.

Donegal School District
The Donegal School District is comprised of Marietta and Mount Joy Boroughs, East Donegal Township and approximately one third of Mount Joy Township. The District’s close proximity to major metropolitan areas and its small town atmosphere have made Donegal an attractive place to live.
The District consists of four schools:
• Donegal Primary School, grades K-2, 1055 Koser Road, Mount Joy
• Donegal Intermediate School, grades 3-6, 1177 River Road, Marietta
• Donegal Junior High School, grades 7 & 8, 915 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy
• Donegal High School, grades 9-12, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy
The District has recently built or renovated all facilities, making Donegal School District’s campus among the most beautiful in the county. In addition to the facility upgrades, the Donegal School District has made strides to meet ever-increasing academic challenges. STEM programs have been added at both the elementary and secondary levels: Engineering by Design at the intermediate school and Project Lead the Way at DJHS and DHS. Advanced placement course options have increased at DHS. As the use of instructional technology has expanded, the District has also implemented a one-to-one computer initiative in grades 3-12.

Milanof-Schock Library
Milanof-Schock Library is the Mount Joy public library. This gem of public service was awarded the American Library Association’s and Gates Foundation’s highest national library honor when it was presented with the Award for “Best Small Library in America – 2006.”
Located in a park-like setting at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, the Library remains a thriving resource the entire community can enjoy.
Free library services began as a Girl Scout bookmobile project in 1962. By 1964, a storefront on Main Street was opened as the Mount Joy Public Library. This tiny space, (Higher Grounds Coffee Shop today), was sorely outgrown by the 1990’s, and a major capital campaign was undertaken. Spurred on by two bequests from the estates of Mount Joy residents Anne Milanof and Clarence Schock, the community raised $1.2 million. The new facility was opened in 1999.
This new, larger building allowed for expanded services to all the residents of the Donegal School District’s five municipalities: East Donegal Township, Marietta Borough, Mount Joy Borough, Mount Joy Township and Rapho Township. Services to the community include a depth of resources for all ages. Material and
programs remain free-of-charge to our residents.
The Library’s mission to be a dynamic destination, which enriches lives through education, information and exploration, is evident daily. At this beautiful location you will find multiple ways to connect to the community and the world. When you visit, be prepared to find neighbors and friends here, too. This is not a library where “shhh” is heard very often.
Services for families begin as soon as new parents walk through the doors. A welcoming children’s space and special, age-appropriate programming for children year-round is a Library tradition. The children’s area is a great place to connect with other parents and families. Three colorful AWE computers just for children immediately set the tone for this remarkable learning environment. You will also find a unique collection of literacy and pre-literacy materials in our collection. Check out books,
Library Hours
movies, toys, and manipulatives chosen specifically to help parents move their children through those critical earlylearning years of birth through age six. Our Skills for Schools collection also includes a delightful collection of books and audiovisual materials for emerging readers.
Teens and adults will also find materials, programs, and activities for them. From summer reading programs and book discussion groups to knitting, and other art programs, the community is invited to enjoy this warm and inviting space. The website makes many online resources available at home, work, or on vacation. Online registration is encouraged. Renew, research and reserve your library materials from any Internetconnected device.
Books and informative materials are still the backbone of our collection, and borrowers will also find DVD’s, magazines and newspapers sitting sideby-side with our Internet computers. Our highly-trained staff is here to help you. Due to the community’s continued support at fundraising events and through generous financial contributions, we are available five days a week. For this we are very grateful. In return, we aim to continue to be one of the best small libraries in America. Stop by and see!
